My friend recommended this place to me and also recommended their specialty menu items. I tried the Piephon for 800 yen and the fluffy hotcakes with a drink for 800 yen. The hotcakes were incredibly thick, over 5 centimeters thick, but still fluffy and chewy, served with butter and syrup. It was like a cross between hotcakes and chiffon cake, a unique and delicious experience. The Piephon was also amazing, especially for those who love whipped cream. The atmosphere of the cafe, set in an old traditional house, was lovely and added to the overall experience. The cafe also had a lot of goldfish-themed items for sale, which was cute. I left feeling very satisfied and happy. Thank you for the wonderful meal!

This is a hidden gem café in Hakodate. When you order a drink, you also get a homemade chiffon cake that is fluffy and delicious. The cost performance is amazing. It's so cheap, I wonder if it's okay. It's a quiet and calming café that I love. Check out more details here: Kingyochaya in Hakodate always serves chiffon cake with drinks! A relaxing hidden café.

I was exploring the Western-style buildings in Hakodate, walking around the Yamate area in the early afternoon when I stumbled upon this cafe. It was a bit of an awkward time with not many shops around, but the location was great, right in front of the Motomachi tram stop and within walking distance to the bay area. It seems to be a branch of a shop from Gifu, and they also sell vintage goods and retro handicrafts inside. The cafe has about 5 tables and a small counter seat, and the food is simple and comforting. The owner handles everything alone, so it may take a bit of time for your order to arrive, but it's a nice place to relax and watch the tram go by outside. The coffee comes with refills, and it's a good spot to reminisce about the old lively days. Overall, a pleasant experience.

Hidden gem café in Hakodate with affordable prices! Their drink menu comes with delicious chiffon cake. The KinGyo set is a great deal, adding salad or toast to your drink for only +100 yen. The cozy atmosphere is filled with cute antiques and goods for sale. Even actor Masaki Suda has visited! KinGyo Chaya is a calming sweet spot with plenty of value menu options!

I used it when I traveled to Hakodate. I was curious because it was listed in the guidebook. I had a matcha float. The chiffon cake that came with it was very fluffy and delicious. The interior was very cute and had a retro feel. It was fun to look at, so the waiting time was not boring.

Day off! After having lunch and strolling around Motomachi, I took a break at a place I visited for the first time. It's located in front of Suehiro tram stop. The interior of the store is a renovated old folk house, keeping remnants of the past, creating a very nice atmosphere. It's called "Kingyo Chaya" and there are cute goldfish everywhere, from coasters to placemats! On the entrance side, there are small items, nostalgic goods, and antiques displayed, and towards the back, there is a cafe space. The menu mainly consists of sweet Japanese dishes, with a wide variety to choose from. They even offer a morning set for an additional 100 yen with your drink order! I ordered an iced matcha cream latte and was pleasantly surprised when it arrived with a piece of matcha chiffon cake! It was just the right amount of sweetness and very delicious, especially after a tiring walk. While waiting, I enjoyed looking at the various items in the store and had a fun time without getting bored. For those with a sweet tooth, I highly recommend this place! Thank you for the treat~.

The entrance had a sign for a kimono shop, but there were also glimpses of miscellaneous goods, making it an intriguing store to visit. Inside, it felt like a cafe with a charming atmosphere. The tables had mats and coasters with goldfish designs everywhere. It was so cute. Despite the cozy atmosphere, it didn't feel uncomfortable even with men around. However, the service was a bit chaotic when it was crowded. It was quite disappointing when there were order mistakes or items took a long time to arrive. It would be helpful if they had a plan for handling such situations. Overall, the atmosphere was not bad.

This time, I went to "Kingyo Teahouse". It had been a while since I took the streetcar to Motomachi area. I visited this shop located in front of Suehiro tram stop. The entrance side of the long shop is a Japanese-style miscellaneous goods store, and the back is a café space. I arrived before 10:30 and sat at a table. Looking at the menu, it seems that the main store is located in Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture, and they offer "morning" like a café in the Tokai region, but the morning at this Hakodate branch is limited to the silver generation... What a shame! It would be great if they could lift the restriction and offer morning to all customers, so they can experience the greatness of morning. Anyway, I ordered an iced coffee. Shortly after, the iced coffee arrived with a matcha chiffon cake. It felt like a complimentary dish similar to an izakaya. When you order coffee at a café in the Tokai region, it seems more luxurious to have a chiffon cake than just a snack. I enjoyed the unexpected chiffon cake and coffee to heal my hangover... Haha. Nevertheless, I still wish they would lift the restriction on morning for all generations! Thank you for the meal.

In the afternoon, I visited Kin-gyo Chaya in Suehirocho for a cafe time. The black building with red window frames stands out with its traditional Japanese style exterior. I found out that this place has its main store in Gifu Prefecture. There are various goods displayed outside the shop, often attracting a crowd of passersby. This was my first visit. Inside, there are table seats right by the entrance, with lots of antiques and goods lined up next to them. There are also table seats in the back, as well as counter seats. There were quite a few customers during my visit. The customers were diverse, with a group of foreigners showing a keen interest in the Japanese-style items. The majority of customers were women, around 10 people in total. There was an elderly man sitting at the counter who seemed eager to strike up a conversation with the foreigners. The group of three lively girls at the next table added to the bustling atmosphere. I ordered the Chocolate Parfait with whipped cream for 640 yen. It took a bit longer to arrive due to the crowd. The presentation was lovely, something a sweet tooth like me would definitely enjoy. It was delicious and satisfying. The cafe was packed with people, some there not just for coffee but to browse the goods as well. The two female staff members were busy attending to the customers. The foreigner who had spent a long time browsing finally found something he liked and proceeded to pay. The man who had wanted to talk to him said "thank you" with a smile. It was a heartwarming moment. Despite the crowded and slightly chaotic atmosphere, the popularity of this place was evident. If it's not too busy, it could be a relaxing spot to enjoy a peaceful moment in a traditional Japanese setting. While watching the girls around me enjoy their meals, I indulged in my sweet treat. It was a delightful experience.

The other day, the weather was nice and it was perfect for a little stroll, so I parked at a nearby paid parking lot and went to "Kingo Chaya," a sweet shop and antique shop in Hakodate. It feels great to walk outside as it gets warmer! It's like getting a star in Mario game haha. I hadn't been here since visiting the bar district in the western area before, so this was my first time visiting during regular hours. The atmosphere inside is still cute and retro Japanese style. My friend had the "Pie Phone" and "Hojicha Latte," while I had the "Oshiruko" and "Matcha Latte." The Pie Phone had a lot of fluffy whipped cream on top of the chiffon cake, which was homemade and delicious. But it was a huge portion! The Matcha Latte had a strong matcha flavor, which I really enjoyed. And the Oshiruko with white rice cakes was a comforting treat after lunch. The shop also has lots of nostalgic household items to browse through, creating a relaxing and cozy atmosphere. We ended up staying longer than planned. When we paid, they deducted an hour's worth of parking fee, which was a nice touch. I highly recommend visiting Kingo Chaya for some sweet treats and a relaxing time.

I sometimes use this cafe during my favorite Western district strolls. The interior has a retro atmosphere, with various Japanese miscellaneous goods placed everywhere. I often order the "Edo Akane Set", which includes matcha chiffon cake, mini zenzai, and warabi mochi, all for 750 yen. There is also the "Koaka Set" for 680 yen, but I always end up choosing this one because I wanted to eat chiffon cake. I'm not a big fan of chiffon cake in general because it tends to be too fluffy, but the one here is moist with a good elasticity, giving it a satisfying texture. Whenever I eat this, I always order a matcha latte as well. The latte has a strong matcha flavor and a fluffy texture. I once tried the "Matcha Anmitsu" for a change, and it was also very filling! I seem to have a preference for matcha flavors, but there are other options available as well (laughs). There are so many choices at this dessert shop that it's hard to decide just by looking at the menu. They also serve curry and omurice, making it a good spot for lunch too. The only downside is that the staff is not very friendly. They seem to be not very good at customer service. If they were a bit more friendly, the overall experience would be much better. When I first visited, the other customers were mostly local elderly people. I remember seeing an elderly lady happily enjoying matcha ice cream at the counter. However, when I went back in February this year, I noticed that the table layout had slightly changed, and there were more tourists coming in just to browse the miscellaneous goods. It can get crowded on weekends, so I recommend visiting on weekdays.
