Schnitzel
This is the sales floor of a very famous confectionery shop from Obihiro located on the basement floor of Tokyu Department Store in front of Sapporo Station. The confectionery shop called "Yukitsuki" is said to be the model for the morning drama series "Natsuzora". As part of a two-day Hokkaido food sourcing tour, I visited this shop. The shop displays classic sweets like Marseille Butter Sand, but among them, I found something new called "Marseille Butter" written on the box. It is butter itself, packaged in a box that looks just like Marseille Butter Sand, containing 200g for 501 yen. Marseille Butter was first commercialized by the Meiji era pioneer group "Banshosei" in 1905, and this seems to be a reproduction of that. In the drama, the character played by Masao Kusakari, the owner of Shibata Ranch, learned at Banshosei and aspires to make that butter. The butter made by the owner is provided to Yukitsuki, and as a result, the shop owner (played by Akira Yasuda) commercializes it as "Butter Senbei". The shop didn't promote any connection with the drama, but this is quite interesting. I bought one and had it packed with a cold pack to take it back to Tokyo. Looking closely at the package, it is manufactured at Meiji's separate factory in Nemuro. It's a bit disappointing that it's not under the Tokachi General Promotion Bureau but under the Nemuro Promotion Bureau. The first thing I tried at home was "Potato Butter". It's delicious when you put butter on steamed potatoes. Maybe because it's fresh, there is no oxidized fat flavor, and it has a fresh and light taste. It seems to be made from unsalted butter used in Marseille Butter Sand cream and biscuits, but the salt content may be slightly low. Next, I made a salmon butter rice ball using Sato Suisan's salmon flakes. This one brings out the flavor of butter even more. The miso butter corn ramen made with Sapporo Ichiban noodles was also delicious. There may not be a significant difference compared to the "Yotsuba Butter" I usually use, but the butter made only from Tokachi milk was quite tasty. The model for Takeru Shibata, the son-in-law of Shibata Ranch, seems to be the founder of "Yotsuba Dairy", the manufacturer of "Yotsuba Butter". This drama has an original script, but it's quite enjoyable to see many real-life people, shops, and companies that serve as models. Stay tuned for the next review.
