Recently, I've been seeing a lot of yakitori-style izakayas popping up everywhere, with tsukune (chicken meatballs) being their specialty. On my way back from shopping near Sapporo Station, I was lured in by a sign advertising a 90-minute all-you-can-drink for 580 yen. It was a holiday, so even though it was 4 pm, the place was quite lively. I declined the table in a sunken kotatsu and opted for a counter seat by the window. They recommended charcoal-grilled skewers, but they also had a monthly special menu and sashimi. I started with a beer and some lotus root kimpira as the appetizer. The lotus root was charged at 300 yen, which seemed a bit pricey for what it was. But since the all-you-can-drink price was cheap, I let it slide. I quickly finished my drink and ordered some skewers. The tsukune, their specialty, had a good flavor and size. It felt a bit small to me, probably because I'm used to jumbo yakitori, but for 100 yen, it was acceptable. The pork red offal was unusual and had a good chew for 90 yen. I would recommend it to those who like offal. They had a great selection of drinks for the price, including authentic shochu, sake, awamori, and cocktails, but the quantity they brought at once was moderate, as was the beer. It was probably for the best not to get too drunk. Surprisingly, I could handle the sake, so I ended up ordering a sashimi platter with five types. This was a mistake, as the sashimi was nothing special for the price of 1480 yen for the amount shown in the photo. I should have ordered more skewers instead. Overall, it's a place where meat is better than fish, and upon researching, I found out that it's related to Gyunoya, which specializes in beef hormone bought from a single cow. It makes sense. It seems like a good idea to start with beer or highballs and focus on meat dishes in the first half, then switch to shochu and enjoy the offal dishes in the second half. If you have a larger group, you can get full for around 2000 yen. The all-you-can-drink deal is super cheap, but they serve drinks and food quickly, and the staff are friendly, prompting you to order more when your glass is empty. It was a satisfying meal.
