In April 2021, I visited the Yufutsu area of Tomakomai, which is a slightly unique area despite being part of the long east-west city of Tomakomai. It may have flourished to some extent before the construction of Tomakomai Nishi Port and the Hidaka Expressway. However, with the construction of the large-scale harbor, it has become somewhat like a frontier land across the river. In 1942, the former Oji Paper Company had already started operations at the Yufutsu plant, and at that time, it was on the main route from Tomakomai to Hidaka. The old JR Hidaka Main Line used to pass through the village, with Yufutsu Station located around the current Yufutsu Public Hall. Furthermore, in 1998, the opening of the Hidaka Expressway led to the realignment of National Route 235, which used to pass through the eastern side of the Yufutsu village, completely cutting it off from the main route. With the recent closure of the current Nippon Paper Yufutsu plant in 2020, the area may continue to decline further in the future.
On a slightly unrelated note, when it comes to dining in the Yufutsu area, there were only a handful of eateries, including the famous "Toriyoshi" that relocated a few years ago. However, about a year ago, the ramen shop "Miharu Shouten" suddenly opened in Yufutsu. I recently tried their regular shoyu ramen, which features a clear soy sauce broth with slightly high water content and medium-thin curly noodles, likely made by popular Mori Sumi Seimen. The toppings included chashu, menma, chopped green onions, roasted seaweed, fried wheat gluten, and naruto, which are all standard. While the soup was simple and to my liking, I felt that the noodles were slightly off for my taste. I think noodles with lower water content would suit this light soup better, but it might be just right with a miso flavor. The price of 780 yen, including tax, seemed a bit high for this location and content. Personally, I feel it could be about 50 yen cheaper. Although there may be few opportunities to visit this area due to its location, those interested should give it a try.
