I went to Monbetsu and tried running around, taking a detour on the way back through the town of Yubetsu. It's been a while since I've been here, so there might be some new places I haven't written about. I quickly found "Takaranei Gyoza." I feel like the number of gyoza places is slowly decreasing, maybe because a place in Kitami closed down. But, was there one in Yubetsu? I don't recall noticing it before. It's a bit pricey, maybe because they have a lot of options. Today, I was in Monbetsu, so I thought I could buy something to take home. I told my wife, "You don't have to make anything today." Even though I usually end up making something anyway, in Monbetsu, there's no takeout, so we'd be short on food. Gyoza would be just right, wouldn't it? The restaurant has been around for a while, but I don't think they had gyoza before. At least, they didn't advertise it so prominently. The couple running the place is really nice, especially the wife. She's fun. I don't mean to say the husband isn't nice, just that there's nothing special to write about him. If you're advertising gyoza this boldly, and then it turns out they only have it in the fridge, it's a bit funny. "It's 1700 yen." That's expensive. "Are you sure this is correct?" "Yes, this is the only size we have, 40 pieces." "Okay!" How many servings is that? 42.5 yen per piece... that's quite something. The exterior of the place is amazing. My wife often comes up with creative dishes that make me go "Wow," but strangely, her curry is just average, almost too normal. She tries to make unique dishes, but sometimes they're just not what I want to eat. When it comes to curry, she seems to rely on her strategies. And then, there's the gyoza. It's terrible. No matter how many times she tries, she just can't get it right. It's not that she's not good at it, she just can't seem to make something that looks appetizing. This time was no different. "I tried to fix it," she said. The fact that she thinks that's an excuse is amazing. "It didn't affect the taste, so I deserve some praise, right?" "Not really." It's meat gyoza. I don't need vegetable gyoza because... I love it. I thought it was delicious, but after eating it again after a long time, I wondered if it was really that good. I guess I just really like it.
