Rashly wandering around without making a reservation for Sunday dinner, all the popular places were fully booked. Well, that's no surprise. I was being too careless. It was a Sunday night in Sapporo. Feeling tired from walking and starting to feel a bit defeated, I suddenly noticed a Genghis Khan (grilled mutton) restaurant with people waiting to get in. It looked a bit shabby (sorry, but it added to the local charm), which indicated that it was loved by locals. So, even though there was only one group ahead of us, the next table didn't seem to be opening up anytime soon. I saw a signboard for a sister store and called to confirm availability. Finally, we headed to the sister store. The atmosphere was a bit rustic, and I even thought the owner might be here too. We took off our shoes and sat in the tatami room. The menu was simple and easy to understand. We started with some drinks and enjoyed the sweet vinegar-pickled herring as an appetizer. I love it! Since we didn't know how much to order and wanted to try the lamb, we ordered the raw lamb (¥1,350) for a minimum of two people. The staff skillfully greased the Genghis Khan pot and showed us how to cook it. They warned us not to overcook it, as it's best rare. We enjoyed the rare lamb, which my companion had never tried before. It was a real treat. The owner recommended a budget-friendly Chilean wine, but I decided to try a bottle of Tokachi wine. It was light and easy to drink. We also added some salted hormone to our meal and ended up feeling quite full. We were lucky to get a seat during a quiet time, and soon more regulars started to fill the place. It seems like a well-loved restaurant by both locals and possibly even celebrities based on the autographed cards on the wall. It was a delightful dining experience.

I went to Hokkaido for a trip and had the opportunity to try Genghis Khan (grilled lamb dish)! It was just a 5-6 minute walk from Susukino Station, near the Susukino Market. I visited Menyotei Rokujou-ten, where a curtain hung at the back of the first floor, creating a charming atmosphere. There were counter seats and raised tatami seating, and the place was bustling with customers. I quickly ordered the raw lamb, and a generous portion of vibrant red lamb meat arrived. The staff first laid out bean sprouts and cabbage, then grilled the meat for us. I enjoyed the Genghis Khan with the special sweet sauce, along with beer and kimchi. The meat had no unpleasant smell, and I focused on enjoying the meal. It was a place where you could truly savor Genghis Khan. I would love to visit again in the future!

The famous restaurants in Susukino all have long lines. After waiting for a while, I came to the conclusion that "restaurants with old signs (meaning they have been in business for a long time) must be delicious!" and jumped into this restaurant. There is a pink telephone and various items placed all over the store, making the interior look quite messy. I love this kind of atmosphere. The Genghis Khan (grilled lamb) for 1 person costs 1,100 yen and as shown in the photo, it is raw lamb. It is not seasoned. The meat claims to be "true Genghis Khan." The menu on the wall does not show the prices for vegetables (laughs). I enjoy eating it with just a little bit of salt. The vegetables have absorbed the right amount of sheep fat and are also delicious. I tried a little bit of salt hormone as well, but I wanted to eat a lot of lamb! So I mostly had Genghis Khan, a total of 8 servings with 3 vegetable refills, and 2 bowls of rice to fill me up. This is a perfect example of the theory that good restaurants become popular and can stay in business for a long time, as evidenced by the old sign.

Lamb meat is good, and having pork hormone is a nice touch! The meat is delicious without any unpleasant smell. The sauce is like sweet yakiniku sauce. The vegetables are a mix of onions, cabbage, and bean sprouts, which is great. The owner cuts the meat while you drink, and their kindness adds to the experience. The cleanliness of the restaurant is lacking, but it has a nice atmosphere. I will definitely go back! Thank you for the meal!

This year's last Genghis Khan meal was here. It seems like the basic serving is two portions per person, so we went with four people and ordered eight portions. The amount was just right. The vegetables were laid out on the iron plate by the owner at the beginning, and he added more when they ran out. Delicious!!! The lamb was of course tasty, and the sauce was really delicious too. I asked if they sold the sauce, but it seems they don't. In the end, the owner even drank with us. Let's go back again soon.

I was taken to this Genghis Khan specialty restaurant, Menyotei Rokujou, in Sapporo by a local when I visited in October 2020. It's a popular spot among locals where you can enjoy delicious raw lamb meat. I visited on a weekday night after work. The meat is quickly grilled on both sides and then dipped in sauce. It's so delicious! The meat is not greasy and goes well with both beer and lamb. I definitely want to visit this place again!

- Raw lamb, 900 yen The photo shows what I believe to be a portion for 10 people (we ordered 2 portions for 5 people)! The fresh raw lamb has a juicy and delicious taste with very little gaminess. I personally think it's best not to cook it too much. It goes well with both draft beer and red wine. The red wine is refreshing and pairs really nicely with the lamb. It's served with ice so you can drink it quickly, but be careful because you might get really drunk (laughs). Thank you for the meal! We had a great time drinking with my friends until we were completely drunk, and it cost around 5,000 yen per person, which I think is a fantastic deal.

The highlight of the night in Sapporo is not in Susukino, but here you can enjoy eating plenty of fresh lamb meat. People who have tried the Genghis Khan here and then try it in Tokyo will be surprised by how thin the meat is there. The meat here is thick, rare, and can be enjoyed properly, making this a rare gem of a restaurant. The location is also perfect, as you wouldn't think to enter if you didn't know about it.

When a senior colleague from work visited Hokkaido, he wanted to try the Genghis Khan here. Finally, we arrived. As we entered through a hidden entrance, a very enthusiastic old man greeted us. After a while, we realized that he was the owner of the restaurant, haha. We kind of understood what he was saying but also didn't quite get it, and ended up ordering 2 servings of Genghis Khan each for the two of us. From there, we were a bit confused by his rambling, but the sauce was delicious! It was different from any other sauce, with a slightly miso-like flavor. When I asked if it was miso, he got angry and said, "Miso? Are you kidding me, you idiot! How many years do you think I've been doing this?" (I think he was joking). Laughed a lot.

Today, I went to a Genghis Khan (Mongolian barbecue) restaurant for an early business trip on a Sunday night. I tried to aim for the 5.5 Daruma set, but there was a line of about 40 people so I gave up. I found another restaurant nearby called Menyotei 6-jo and decided to check it out. I sat at the counter and ordered a draft beer (550 yen). The chef recommended the basic set for two people, so I ordered two servings of raw lamb (950 yen each). The draft beer arrived and I took a sip, feeling refreshed. The chef brought out some marinated mackerel as a starter. Next, came the vegetables, mainly bean sprouts with a little bit of onions and cabbage. Finally, the raw lamb arrived, thickly sliced. The chef reminded me not to overcook the meat. I cooked two pieces at a time and enjoyed the delicious flavor of the lamb. I ordered another beer and continued eating. I ordered a sake (400 yen) as well. After finishing my meal, I felt satisfied. The bill came to 4,000 yen, which included a 600 yen charge for the starter or vegetables. Overall, it was a tasty meal.

The service was dramatically bad. I don't know much about Genghis Khan, but as a food, it was just average. This means I can't recommend it to others or even go there myself. Should it have lined up with popular restaurants like Darumaya and Itadakimasu? Tourists wouldn't know. Just disappointing.

I couldn't make a reservation in advance for dinner this day, so around 9 pm, I went to have Genghis Khan at Menyotei 5-jyo, run by a lady I sometimes visit. It was full, so I tried the 6-jyo branch run by an old man for the first time. Luckily, there was a seat at the counter, so I entered. The appetizers were kimchi and pickled herring. I had oolong tea for a drink. The service here was more polite compared to the 5-jyo branch, with only the old man and one male staff member. The meat was fresh thick-cut raw lamb shoulder loin, grilled quickly using charcoal and enjoyed with a special sauce. The vegetables were onions and bean sprouts. The menu was slightly different from the 5-jyo branch, and it was disappointing that they didn't have bone-in lamb. I decided to skip the rice and not ask for a refill on the meat, as I planned to go for miso ramen as a finishing touch... (laughs) As expected, the fresh thick-cut raw lamb cooked on the charcoal grill was delicious. Thank you for the meal.

Business trip to Hokkaido. Once again, I was guided by a local. This place has some pretty unique old guys. The restaurant may seem intimidating to first-time visitors. The interior is truly traditional, with a counter and tatami seating. It was our third stop, so we ordered Genghis Khan and Jizou Garlic, planning for two servings but the old guy insisted on three servings! I couldn't finish it all! However, it was delicious. The lamb meat here is so fresh that you could even eat it raw. I'm not sure if it's the way it's cut or the quality of the meat, but it's really good. Grilling the lamb meat over charcoal gives it a tender texture and spreads its flavor in your mouth. And the Jizou Garlic, a first for me? It's amazing! When it softens a bit, it's apparently ready to eat. The staff explained and initially grilled it for us. With a moderate bitterness and unique spiciness, it pairs well with alcohol! And it goes well with the lamb meat! The old guy is quite forceful. I personally enjoy that kind of atmosphere, so it's fine for me, but I wouldn't recommend it for those who are not fans. But it's delicious! I'll definitely go back when I visit Sapporo again!
