Wine, women an' song
It's been a while since I visited Sapporo. I didn't know this restaurant at all, but I was intrigued by a talk by Mr. Masashi Sada on a TV show the other day. I wanted to try both the salt ramen and what he called "the best fried rice in Japan," but I wasn't sure if I could handle two dishes by myself. It was my first time at Kita 34-jo Station. I arrived around 5:30 pm on a weekday. The restaurant was almost full, but luckily there was one seat available at the counter. (More customers kept coming in afterwards) The young proprietress apologized, saying, "I'm sorry, but we've run out of rice. Is that okay?" The fried rice was gone. I noticed that all six guys in the group before me had ordered the fried rice. (Were they all served at the same time? Did they cook it all together?) Like me, it seemed that many people who had seen the TV show were ordering the salt ramen. I also ordered beer, salt ramen, and dumplings. The clear golden-colored soup, made from pork bones and chicken, with coarse salt and garlic, was refreshing and easy to drink. The medium-thick noodles were well-matched and indeed delicious. However, judging from the situation inside the restaurant and the rush of salt ramen orders, I wonder if they were able to fully achieve the original taste of their "salt ramen"... But that's just my guess. I don't remember the dumplings being particularly outstanding. At one point, I heard the sound of rice being cooked again. They were vigorously shaking the pot. It seemed like they were also running out of noodles. The owner's voice saying, "I can't do this anymore..." was audible, and they closed before 7 pm. As Mr. Sada said, the ramen and the fried rice that I didn't get to try seem to be really delicious here. However, with the influx of TV viewers like me, the atmosphere seemed a bit chaotic, so I think it's better to wait a bit before coming to fully enjoy the taste here. On my way out, the proprietress apologized again, but I told her that it was delicious and a good experience. I don't know when, but I definitely want to try the fried rice next time. By the way, there are several "Tsukimeiken" restaurants in the city, but they are not related to this one... or rather, there seemed to be some issues, so for fans of Mr. Sada, please visit this one.
