I came to get some extra-large live scallops! I arrived too early while they were still preparing, but managed to be the first one to get 2 boxes (10 scallops in total)! I returned home, set up a shichirin on top of the gas stove, and grilled them right away! They were super delicious and now I am super full!

Solo camping in Shiraoi town ASOBUBA. I purchased Akkeshi-grown fresh oysters and heated them over a campfire... Enjoyed them with a drink before dinner. They were large and delicious, very satisfying for this season. The next morning, I tried making Vongole Bianco with clams from Abashiri.

I bought clams and firefly squid and made a paella in a frying pan at Shiraoi Poroto Forest Campground...AMAZING! Shiraoi is a great camping spot with excellent seafood and beef shops, as well as natural hot springs, making it a wonderful area.

I discovered a bustling shop along Route 36 from Tomakomai to Noboribetsu. It is a market called "Evening Market" operated by Marugo Suisan, where seafood can be bought at a very cheap price, only open on weekends from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm. I had never noticed it before as I rarely passed by during weekends. I decided to stop by following the crowd of cars. It was late July, and they were selling locally caught fish and sea urchins in shells outside. I was surprised by the prices - a box of 20-30 sea urchins for only 1000 yen, which was a great deal! However, it was too much for me to eat alone, so I reluctantly passed. Inside the shop, despite not being very spacious, there was a variety of seafood and frozen products at incredibly low prices. During this season, crabs from Torazaki Beach were being sold for 1000-2000 yen, including frozen snow crabs and small king crab legs in bags for 1000 yen each. I purchased three items: salmon flakes, boiled whelks, and octopus legs, all of which were cheap and delicious. The salmon flakes were fatty and great for snacking with alcohol at 420 yen. The boiled whelks were 1000 yen for a large bag and 350 yen for a small bag, which I bought for myself. The octopus legs were sold by weight for 300-600 yen and were great for sashimi and takoyaki. They also had frozen scallops, whelks in bags, cod roe, and octopus with wasabi, all in large quantities at unbeatable prices. The market is quite crowded when the Evening Market is held, as it offers seafood products that are not commonly found at regular supermarkets at very affordable prices.

I stopped by a shop along the sea on my way back from eating soba in Noboribetsu to buy some snacks for drinking in the evening. The shop is only open on weekends, with a sign saying it's open from 13:00 to 17:00, but it actually opens earlier. I went around noon and it was already open. I bought hair crab and fresh sea urchin. The hair crab was priced starting from 1000 yen, and it was from Maehama with a nice miso flavor with a hint of bitterness. The meat was plentiful. The sea urchin was a large size with 8 pieces. It was a delicious meal. Thank you.

Shiraoi is a town located between Tomakomai and Noboribetsu in Hokkaido. In the area of Kojohama in Shiraoi, they are famous for processing "tarako" (cod roe). I visited a popular seafood processing shop called "Marugo Suisan" in Shiraoi, which operates a market every Saturday and Sunday from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm along Route 36. They offer a variety of seafood products at very affordable prices, attracting many locals and visitors. The shop is located on Route 36, with a large parking lot in front of it. They sell a variety of seafood products, including tarako, squid marinated in soy sauce, homemade salted fish roe, salmon jerky, and more. Their weekly special items are particularly popular for being 20-40% cheaper than other shops. I bought a cup of hairy crab for only 500 yen, which is a local favorite. The shopkeeper was very helpful in helping me choose the best one. The quality of the crab was excellent, with a sweet and salty taste, perfect for a snack with drinks. They also offer a variety of fresh fish assortments for sale, which you can select based on your preferences. Overall, the market is a must-visit if you are in the area and looking for fresh and affordable seafood products.

Kojohama, Shiraoi Town. The town's beach overlooking the Pacific Ocean is also a treasure trove of abundant seafood. Along the national highway in Kojohama, there is a seafood market called "Kaisanbutsu Yushichi" operated only on weekends by Marugo Suisan. Inside the store, there is a wide variety of fresh fish from Kojohama and other parts of Hokkaido, as well as dried, frozen, and processed seafood products. You can sometimes find fish and shellfish packed in styrofoam cases for less than 1000 yen, making it quite a bargain. The locally caught Kojohama hair crab is also recommended, with good quality and taste at an affordable price. The area is known for its delicious fish like Soppe flounder, and dried fish is also recommended. Sweet shrimp caught at the neighboring Noboribetsu fishing port may also be available. Of course, they also sell the famous Kojohama tarako.

When heading from Shiraoi Town to Noboribetsu City, there is a seafood shop that only operates on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The prominent sign "Evening Market" catches the eye. The shop displays seafood caught from all over Hokkaido, and it gets bustling especially around December, during the year-end gift season. The prices of fish and shellfish are about 20-30% cheaper than those sold in supermarkets, making it convenient for those skilled in fish cooking. However, for households like ours with knife skills to improve or lacking a huge freezer, it may not be as convenient. You might find hidden gems, so going with a treasure-hunting mindset could be enjoyable.
