Welcome! On January 2016, when taking photos outside of the former Nankoen site where Mia Bocca and Monterosa are located under the JR Kotoni Station viaduct, a staff member behind me said, "We're opening today!" Kotoni opens from 4 pm, so I got there early. It's nice that there are many elderly staff members, and it's convenient for early drinking. The staff, wearing Kokko T-shirts, had a very steak-like smile on the first day. Kokko has a counter and box seats in the shape of the letter "ko," and there seems to be a raised tatami area in the back, but I didn't go that far so I'm not sure. I sat in a box seat where I could see the grilling area, and the all-you-can-drink was cheap for the grand opening, so I decided to go with that. For starters, I had shrimp senbei and edamame. The crispy sound and flavor were good for snacks. The edamame was slightly bland. They have a lot of chicken and egg skewers, and some pork, but they use Tokachi herb beef. There are several stores in the city, but the taste varies. I had to wait a bit for the "immediately ready" chicken tenderloin with grated ponzu, which felt like cheating because it was so delicious. The mild acidity and grated flavor made it refreshing with the ponzu. The egg dish is apparently the top snack, with a melting half-boiled egg and a tangy mayonnaise sauce that is irresistible. I was unsure about it at first, but it turned out to be addictive. The most popular fried dish is the chicken karaage with a secret sauce. It's not as thick as the usual teriyaki sauce, but the ginger flavor and sweetness are like a grilled chicken sauce. Unexpectedly, it's not too strong, but it's a good idea. The chicken skin was crispy and fragrant, but I wish it had a more satisfying crunch. The skewered chicken was surprisingly tender and juicy, with a mild saltiness. The tenderloin was a bit tough, either because there was too little sauce or it was overcooked. The sauce was sweet and salty, and it would have been better if it had more flavor. The herb beef with mountain wasabi was served with a grater, and the time given to grate it was appreciated. The beef had a good fat content and a sweet aroma, and the mountain wasabi added a nice aftertaste. The all-you-can-drink option allows you to drink for 90 minutes, and towards the end, they even ask if you want a "mega" size, which is around 750ml. Of course, that will make you need the restroom more often. The service was sincere and straightforward, even though it's a new restaurant. The staff seemed to have been transferred from various other stores, and the manuals were well-prepared. I wonder if there were any new hires. They seem to value the elderly customers in the neighborhood, so thank you for the delicious meal!
