Arrived in Hokkaido on August 11th and had my first meal at Hakodate Morning Market. There were various shops inside and I was unsure where to eat, but someone approached me and offered to save a seat for me, so I decided to dine there. I ordered a seafood bowl set with crab soup for ¥1,900. I could choose the sashimi to put on top, so I picked sea urchin, salmon roe, tuna, scallop, and octopus for a colorful bowl. They also offered snow crab at market price, so I decided to try it as well. It was around ¥5,000 I think. The crab miso and meat were both delicious and flavorful. The seafood bowl at ¥1,900 was also a great deal in terms of cost performance.

I used the breakfast voucher from Tokyu Stay Hotel at Hakodate Morning Market. Since I had enjoyed sushi the night before, I wasn't in the mood for seafood bowl and decided to try the grilled Atka mackerel set that I had been curious about. I had to wait a little because it was served freshly grilled, but it was juicy and delicious as expected. I was happy to try squid sashimi, fukahire (blowfish fin) Matsumae, squid with spicy cod roe, and squid salted guts, which I don't usually eat. Towards the end of the meal, the owner said, "The best part of Atka mackerel is between the skin and the flesh, it's the most fatty and delicious. Don't leave the skin." However, I replied, "Atka mackerel has good flesh separation, so it's difficult to eat the skin along with it. You should have told me before I started eating." The skin indeed had a lot of fat. My husband was delighted as he chewed on the skin alone, saying it was delicious. This was a hit.

On the final day of my trip to Hokkaido, I had breakfast at the Hakodate Morning Market. I couldn't resist the pressure from the old lady and ended up entering a restaurant where you could choose 4 types of toppings for 1,300 yen. I chose crab, tuna, and salmon. The portion was decent, but the presentation was disappointing and I couldn't tell where the ingredients were from. The taste was okay, but not outstanding. I also ordered 4 grilled king crab legs that were offered as an extra for a total of 10,000 yen. However, I later realized that they were frozen. Nevertheless, the king crab legs were incredibly delicious and the meat was firm and flavorful. Overall, despite some shortcomings, the king crab legs were definitely worth it.

I had a meal with saltwater sea urchin, salmon roe, scallop delicacy, squid salted guts, squid mentaiko, shark fin matsumae, squid sashimi matsumae, and crab soup with red meat melon using a hotel breakfast voucher. The saltwater sea urchin was sweet and creamy, the scallops were firm, and the salmon roe was popping. The various flavors complemented each other well. The squid delicacy was especially delicious. It would go really well with white rice!

This trip to Hokkaido was all about seafood, as I love it. However, one of the members I was with unexpectedly had a fish roe allergy. Surprisingly, there were not many shops offering tuna at the Hakodate Morning Market. In the light rain, we were warmly greeted by a cheerful old lady at a shop located in the farthest corner from the station. Despite the quiet atmosphere, the seafood set meal with four varieties (sea urchin, salmon roe, crab, scallop) was plentiful and priced at 1,980 yen, which was reasonable in this area. It was delicious.

It was a breakfast partner restaurant of the hotel where I stayed. There were 15 partner restaurants, but I decided to try the one that served seafood bowls because it looked luxurious with 4 side dishes included. The seafood bowl was very delicious, especially the scallops were not fishy at all, sweet, and melted in my mouth. The side dishes, however, were overall sweet in flavor, which was not really to my liking. The staff at the dining hall were cheerful and friendly, creating a nice atmosphere.

I chose four types of sashimi for 1300 yen. I walked around the market and this seemed to be the best value. I chose squid, tuna, salmon, and ikura. It also came with a small dish of salted squid. The staff was very friendly and I enjoyed the meal.

During my one-week stay in Hakodate, I visited this restaurant for breakfast. It is one of the designated restaurants for the hotel breakfast voucher, with a small number of seats and a simple atmosphere located away from the market. Despite having fewer customers, I believe their seafood bowl is the most luxurious among the options available with the voucher. Even the highest-rated restaurant in the market only offers budget-friendly menu items for breakfast voucher holders, excluding sea urchin. The quality of sea urchin, shrimp, and squid is top-notch. However, the cost may not seem as advantageous compared to other restaurants if paying the regular price. The service may come off as old-fashioned or quirky, but I feel that they invest the most in the quality of ingredients among the breakfast voucher designated restaurants.

I visited a restaurant that was the only one in the area offering grilled Atka mackerel with a breakfast voucher. Despite being small, old, and far from the station or market, the lack of customers made it easy to enter. The Atka mackerel was larger than expected and had a rich flavor, which was satisfying. Compared to other restaurants that serve imported striped Atka mackerel, this place felt more genuine.

Today, I visited Hakodate Roman-kan. Taste → ☆☆☆☆ Service → ☆☆☆☆ Atmosphere → ☆☆☆☆ Cost performance → ☆☆☆☆ Drink → ☆☆☆ As part of the previous GoTo Hokkaido campaign, I visited the morning market in Hakodate on the second day. The vendors were welcoming and full of energy. I was drawn to a lively mother figure and enjoyed fresh seafood for breakfast. I had mini boiled king crab, squid sashimi, and grilled Atka mackerel. It was a luxurious meal. The sweet crab, fresh squid sashimi, and tender, fatty mackerel made me feel like coming to Hokkaido was worth it. I couldn't resist buying some souvenirs from the market, spending around 20,000 yen in total. Thank you for the delicious meal.

After finishing a stroll at the "Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse," I stopped by the "Hakodate Asaichi Morning Market" to pick up some last-minute souvenirs. Unfortunately, some shops were already closed as it was getting late. I decided to get "Bottled Salted Sea Urchin for ¥1000" as a souvenir for my partner. Although my partner suggested getting three for ¥2500, I thought it was too much. Then, I noticed a sign saying "Fresh Shishamo Available!" I had never tried real shishamo before, so I decided to give it a try. The male ones were ¥1300 for 10, while the female ones were ¥1500. Despite the touristy price, I couldn't resist and chose a female shishamo, which was carefully packed with ice packs. The next evening, I cooked the shishamo in a frying pan with grill foil, as recommended. The smell was amazing, and the texture of the eggs was delightful. I usually eat shishamo with mayonnaise and soy sauce, but the real shishamo was delicious on its own. It was worth the price! The "Bottled Salted Sea Urchin" was also fantastic, especially when served on freshly cooked rice. The grains of sea urchin were distinct and the saltiness was just right. I may have bought it as a souvenir for my partner, but I couldn't resist trying it myself.

On the third day of my trip on October 21, 2018, I had breakfast at the buffet at "La Vista Hakodate Bay" and checked out of the hotel at 9:45. I walked 1km to the "Hakodate Morning Market" to explore. The market is located near JR Hakodate Station, covering a vast area of 1 hectare with approximately 250 shops selling a variety of Hokkaido specialties such as crab, salmon, and fresh produce. There are also seafood restaurants serving delicious seafood bowls. I visited the "Hakodate Ryouran-kan" within the market, where I purchased fresh sea urchin and peeled snow crab. The sea urchin was soaked in deep-sea water without any additives, making it a popular luxury item. I decided to bring back frozen peeled snow crab as a souvenir. Later that day, I made a luxurious crab bowl and crab soup at home using the snow crab. The snow crab is known for its delicate and sweet flavor, making it easy to extract the meat. It was a delicious meal, and I also prepared another luxurious bowl which will be revealed in the next review. Each type of crab has its own unique taste, but all of them are delicious.

High cost-performance ratio. The sea urchin rice bowl with saltwater sea urchin is delicious. The small side dishes, including squid delicacies, are also tasty. This is the perfect breakfast in Hakodate!

Hakodate Morning Market! Had a bowl with scallops, salmon, and tuna for 1300 yen! The miso soup had crab in it! (so happy) Also had some pickled squid with it! (so happy) The lady serving was so enthusiastic, it was hard to resist (lol). When choosing the third topping for the bowl, she kept pushing the crab, saying "Crab is delicious, want some crab?" The miso soup had crab in it, so I went with tuna. She mentioned that the souvenir shop across the street is also part of the same store, so I bought a large squid rice dish as a souvenir. It had scallops and sea urchin inside, so delicious! Thank you, lady! Thank you, Hakodate!!

I chose the 2-color bowl with "salmon roe" and "crab" for 1,100 yen including tax. A luxurious seafood bowl at 6:30 in the morning. This kind of luxury might be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The miso soup with crab and crunchy squid salted guts were also delicious. It was a wonderful meal while feeling the morning atmosphere. Thank you for the meal.
