In October 2021, a well-known sushi restaurant in Shibuya, "Kurosaki," has created a new concept specializing in bara chirashi and sashimi. The name of the new establishment is "Sakana Kurosaki," managed by Kurosaki Kenta, the younger brother of Kurosaki Kazuki. Located just a 10-minute walk from "Kurosaki," the exterior of the store may make you briefly question if it's a fish market. As you pass through the long noren curtain, you'll be greeted by a sparkling hinoki counter and showcase, with orchids dancing in celebration. During my visit, they served tuna from Oma, Aomori, as well as fresh squid, small fish sushi, dried hairtail, grilled swordfish, and other varieties similar to those offered at "Kurosaki." The menu consists only of bara chirashi and sashimi, with options for special arrangements like assorted platters and futomaki available with prior reservation. On this occasion, I ordered the bara chirashi that I had previously enjoyed in the restaurant. Kurosaki Kenta handed me the beautifully wrapped bara chirashi, showcasing his stylish and sophisticated touch. Unwrapping the package revealed a colorful array of small fish, lean tuna, fatty tuna, shrimp, white fish, octopus, conger eel, salmon roe, egg, dried gourd, simmered shiitake mushroom, seaweed, cucumber, and pickled ginger arranged elegantly on top of the sushi rice. The combination of rich sweetness, acidity, and umami, complemented by the crunchy texture of cucumber and chewy octopus, created a delightful symphony of flavors in my mouth. This dish is not only perfect for gifts or treats but also an ideal indulgence for oneself.
