The popular "Tanuki COMICHI" continues to attract crowds with 5-60 people lining up before opening. The most popular spot seems to be "Shihachi Sengyo-ten". I decided to avoid the crowded places and stopped by "Jujiya Coffee Shop". It is run by two women, one young and one not so young, with a counter seating for 7 and four two-seater tables. I sat at the corner of the counter and looked at the menu. It said "Self-serve for water", but I didn't notice, so it might be better if they inform customers. They offer coffee (blend, hot or iced), cafe au lait in large or medium sizes, Trappist beer, Sapporo Ebisu Premium Black, sake "Goryo" and "Kohho", Hakodate wine, and food items like Hakodate squid, Hakodate ice cream, Hakodate ice cream & coffee jelly, and Trappist cookies. The shop was founded in Hakodate in 1932 and still operates a coffee stand in Hakodate Ekini Market, selling ground coffee beans as well. I ordered a "Blend (M)@500", they weighed and ground the beans, then slowly brewed it with a hand drip. It was served in an original thick cup with the shop's name on it. It was served at a good temperature, slightly bitter with a hint of acidity and astringency, which I really enjoyed. The M size, both hot and iced, is 500 yen, while the L size is 600 yen. It would be nice if they had more menu options like toast or sandwiches in the future.
