On a certain holiday, I stopped by a castella shop in the food section of Sapporo Mitsukoshi on my way home. The shop is relatively small and located towards the back, with only one showcase. On this day, I couldn't find the traditional castella I was looking for at a reasonable price for home use, so I ended up choosing "Fukusaya Cube (270 yen each)" from the limited options available. I felt a bit sorry as I told the lady at the shop. When I took a bite... Wow, hmm? Oh, I accidentally ate the paper at the bottom (^^;). The sweetness of the zaramé between the paper and the castella was good, making it easy to eat. The castella was a nice yellow color with a moist texture, and it was slightly on the sweeter side, but I think that's just right for castella. Suddenly, I realized how tough it is to be single at times like this... Thank you for the meal.

Castella is by far my favorite from Fukusaya. This cube contains 2 slices, perfect for a snack or a small gift. It is colorful and you can choose from about 5 colors - blue, purple, pink, yellow, green. I can't help but want all 5 colors! It is moist, fluffy, sweet but not too sweet, and I love it.

Today, I got a set of Dutch cake size 0.6 and castella size 1. I just realized that you can buy Fukusaya's castella even in Sapporo. Fukusaya's castella is my favorite, so I tend to favor it. Even though size 0.6 is enough to eat at home, I still want to eat plenty of size 1. The distinctive feature of Nagasaki castella is that there are leftover granules on the back, and without them, it doesn't feel like I've eaten anything. The Dutch cake might be mistaken for just a chocolate cake, but it has a mellow taste with walnuts, raisins, and cocoa. It's delicious, but it still can't beat castella.

Since this is my second post, I'll briefly review the "Castella 0.6" again.
■Castella 0.6
Price: 1,188 yen (including 8% consumption tax)
Fukusaya's castella has a great taste. You can feel the history in its flavor. The "zaramé" on the castella is indescribable.

Fukusaya is a Nagasaki castella shop that values craftsmanship. Established in the first year of Kan'ei era in 1624!
Fukusaya is a Nagasaki castella shop established in the first year of Kan'ei era in 1624. It's a long-standing shop with nearly 400 years of history. In Hokkaido, you can only buy it at two stores. In other words, it's a castella that can only be purchased at two stores. The shop is located in the Chuo Ward of Sapporo City, on the 2nd basement floor of Daimaru Sapporo. Please check the exact location on Tabelog. Fukusaya values craftsmanship. They still don't use mixers or other stirring machines. As a result, the castella has a fine and fluffy texture. Personally, I like the zaramé at the bottom of the castella. Without it, the castella would feel a bit lonely.

The ingredients are only eggs, sugar, wheat, and syrup. No additives. It is cut into 10 pieces. Each piece is 38g, about 100kcal, and costs 1,050 yen. It's the most reasonable size. It's a slightly high-quality castella. It goes well with black coffee. The sales area is small, so you might not notice it easily. It was delicious, thank you.

A branch of the famous Nagasaki Castella shop located in the Mitsukoshi department store basement. They offer Castella cakes and Dutch cakes. The popular choice is the 0.5 size for 840 yen, which is just the right size to enjoy. The Castella is slightly sweet but moist and delicious. The caramelized sugar at the bottom is also quite tasty. However, the Dutch cake flavored with cocoa, walnuts, and raisins may be a bit too sweet for some people's taste. It could be a matter of preference...

Castella cakes can be hit or miss, but this one is really good. It's moist and easy to eat, unlike some others that can be dry and crumbly. I like that it comes pre-sliced, and I can even freeze it for later. I enjoy toasting it and having it with coffee. I also make it into rusks, which my sweet-toothed father loves. It goes well with green tea or matcha when eaten plain.

I first learned about this castella cake from a souvenir brought by my friend's family. Since then, whenever I buy castella, I always rely on Fukusaya. The castella here has a rough texture at the bottom, so when you first buy it, you can enjoy the crunchy texture of the zarama. As the expiration date approaches, the zarama gradually integrates with the cake, making it even more delicious. This product can only be purchased in Sapporo, Hokkaido, but whenever I see their paper bag, I can't help but crave it. The Dutch cake is also delicious, but the impact of the castella is too strong, so I don't repeat it. It's a product that I wouldn't be embarrassed to give to anyone.

A friend sent me a castella cake from Fukusaya. It arrived in the morning and I was hungry, so I ended up eating three slices before lunch. I can see some granules at the bottom, but it's not crunchy. Eating this kind of cake can make me feel full and happy. I'm happy that my friend chose this for me, they know what I like. I haven't bought Fukusaya's castella in Sapporo myself, but it's convenient to buy it in Sapporo, so I feel like I can buy it anytime.
