When I was a college student, I visited Kitayama Honten a few times and really wanted to eat there, so I visited this restaurant located in Miyakomichi on the Yojin side of Kyoto Station. I arrived a little after 3 pm on a day when a cold wave, said to occur once every 10 years, was still intensifying, so there were only about 5 groups in the restaurant. I was promptly seated. Unfortunately, on that day, they couldn't prepare the mushroom soup, so I didn't order the C set. Instead, I ordered the B set of the famous hundred-year hamburger (tax included 2080 yen), which includes tomato salad + bread or rice + choice of dessert (pudding or cake) + choice of drink (coffee, black tea, chamomile tea). The A set with only tomato salad + bread or rice is 1580 yen. First, the famous tomato salad arrived. On that day, it was made with tomatoes from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto. The tomatoes were sliced and placed on a tuna mayo salad with plenty of sliced onions and a tangy dressing. As I finished the salad, the hamburger wrapped in foil arrived. The foil was hot, so I cut it open with a knife and fork. The hamburger was topped with tender stewed beef. The sauce was beef stew, with green beans and onions mixed in. The hamburger was also flavorful, tender, and meaty, truly delicious. I savored each piece carefully. I asked for bread, and it was a soft baguette, also delicious! It came with margarine, but it was not needed. You can also have seconds, but I didn't. I scooped the stew with the baguette and enjoyed it. For dessert, I chose the hundred-year pudding. It was smooth, with a hint of caramel's slight bitterness, a truly wonderful dish! (You can also choose cake or other options). But most importantly, I have to mention the whole baked potato with chunks on top! I'm not a big fan of potatoes with meat dishes, but this was just amazing. It was sweet, soft, and smooth, unlike regular potatoes! It was cooked slowly at low temperatures. It was so delicious that I was a bit moved. I was told it's called Kitakamui from Hokkaido. The service was also great. They took away the fork and knife from the tomato salad and brought new ones before the hamburger (I thought they would leave them). They also brought a new towel before dessert, and that attention to detail was wonderful. There were no negative points. The taste and service of this over 120-year-old Western-style restaurant in Kyoto are truly amazing. There are three Toyo-tei restaurants around Kyoto Station, and all of them are very popular with long lines. Maybe this one is the most hidden gem...? It was really delicious, thank you for the meal.
