At 1:30 on Sunday. I planned to go to Happy Curry via Arashiyama, but when I looked it up, it was closed for a special event. Instead, I decided to try this place recommended by a reviewer. It's a curry made by a Nepalese chef who trained in India. A bit complicated. I ordered Set A with chicken curry, medium spiciness, and a cola for the drink. The naan was already cut into pieces, but it was easy to eat even though it was big. The authentic Indian curry was cheap and delicious. At first, an Indian (probably) family entered almost at the same time and sat at a table far away. I could hear them speaking quite good English. They might be living in America or Britain, or maybe they are intellectuals in their home country. Apparently, there is a main store in Shirakawa Imadegawa.

-Kyoto City, Ukyo-ku, Saturday, 6:00 pm. The spacious interior of the restaurant has counter seats at the back and table seats. There is only one group of customers. Although a bit away from the bustling tourist spot of Arashiyama, this restaurant is conveniently close to JR Saga-Arashiyama Station. The nearby coin parking becomes 100 yen per hour after 6:00 pm, which is a nice bonus. The Mahaset for dinner is 1300 yen, which includes curry naan or rice, 2 chicken tikka, salad, and a drink. You can choose from chicken, spinach, vegetable, or keema curry, and also choose the level of spiciness. The drink options include lassi, mango lassi, chai, oolong tea, cola, and more. You can also add cheese naan or other curries for an additional fee. The spinach curry (medium spiciness) has a nice level of heat, creamy and easy to eat. The spinach flavor is not very strong. The cut naan is easy to eat and slightly sweet. Having recently eaten a lot of authentic Indian cuisine, this curry was more like what Japanese people imagine curry to be - delicious and easy to eat. The lunch menu is even more affordable, so it might be worth trying. If the cleanliness of the restaurant was a bit better, it could have been a more charming space.

When you get off at JR Saga Arashiyama Station, instead of heading towards the south exit where most tourists go, head towards the north exit and aim for Seiryoji Temple. There are very few restaurants along the way, so I barely found a place to eat. I had a curry lunch set which included chicken curry, naan, salad, tandoori chicken, and a drink for 950 yen. You can choose the level of spiciness, and I chose mild. The curry was really mild and flavorful, the naan was fluffy with a good amount of sugar and oil, and the portion was quite generous. The tandoori chicken was also delicious. It's not something I would specifically come to eat in Saga Arashiyama, but if there was a place nearby, I would definitely come back just for the 590 yen curry and naan.

I went to Sagano and Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto. Before that, I wanted to have lunch, but there are few restaurants on the north side of JR Saga Arashiyama Station. I couldn't get a reservation at a Western restaurant, so I decided to go to a Nepalese curry restaurant that caught my eye. At first glance, it seemed like there were only counter seats in a narrow entrance, but the building continued to the back and there was a surprisingly spacious space with table seats. I chose the Set A which includes curry, naan (or rice), salad, chicken tikka, and a drink. The curry was medium spicy. Everything was served on a tray. The naan was pre-cut with a knife, which made it easier to eat. The naan was fluffy and sweet because it had a lot of sugar. The slightly salty and spicy chicken curry went well with it. The dressing for the salad was grated carrots. The chicken tikka seemed like it was reheated. I chose iced chai for the drink, but it was extremely sweet, which was the only downside. Other than the drink, everything was good. If I had chosen the 590 yen curry lunch without the chicken tikka, it would have been satisfying without the overly sweet drink. Maybe I should have chosen cola or something! Overall, I would rate it without the overly sweet drink. MAHA SET A 880 yen

Today's lunch was at "MAHACURRY Saga Arashiyama", a curry restaurant located at the intersection of the road extending north from JR Saga Arashiyama Station and Marutamachi Station. The restaurant has a modern exterior and does not give off the typical Indian curry vibe. Upon entering, there is a long counter leading to a spacious room with tables. They offer a wide variety of curry options and an extensive selection of naan as well. The standard choice is between Set A or Set B, which comes with a salad. I opted for the unusual "Cheese nan SET" for 790 yen. The food took a while to come out and the presentation was simple. The salad was on the smaller side with the classic orange dressing. The Chicken Tikka had a subtle presence. The Chicken Curry was spicy, but not overwhelmingly so, a classic choice at Indian curry restaurants. The Cheese Naan was rich and satisfying, not overly large but filling. Overall, you can enjoy Indian curry in a stylish and modern setting at this restaurant.
