Eating Pleasure

The lunch set with tempura bowl and cold soba noodles has very thin noodles but with a firm texture, almost like cold noodles. The tempura bowl comes with shrimp, bell pepper, pumpkin, and long green pepper tempura that is crispy. It would have been nice to have a bit more tempura sauce on top. The restaurant has a calm atmosphere with jazz music playing, and there are people enjoying daytime drinking. I really liked this place.

The other day, I enjoyed the evening at Sobakobo Hoheito for the first time. The calm interior and gentle music playing help to relax a tired body. I heard that the previous owner fell in love with Izushi soba and opened this shop. Even though I have visited many times, this was my first time trying Hoheito's plate soba. It was definitely the best soba! Perhaps eating Hoheito's soba as plate soba is the best way to enjoy it. It was that delicious. Since I live nearby, love soba, and am charmed by Hoheito's soba and atmosphere, I feel like this will become a regular spot for me. Thank you always.

I went to "Soba Kobo Hoheito" to eat plate soba. This place has a charming Kyoto townhouse style and serves plate soba similar to Izushi soba, which I occasionally crave. This time, I ordered plate soba, which comes with 5 plates and condiments. The soba noodles are thinner compared to Izushi soba. First, I tried them plain, then added condiments, grated yam, and finally an egg. It was tricky to decide when to add the condiments after eating how many plates. In the end, I had a total of 10 plates, as I was afraid I could eat as many as I wanted. I love plate soba because it's always fun to enjoy different toppings and combinations.

I visited during lunch on March 16, 2023, and there were 2 customers before me and 1 customer after me, so it felt quite empty. I ordered the recommended lunch set, choosing the cold noodles. It was nice that they brought buckwheat flour and soba tea before serving the noodles. The texture of the noodles was good. The soba dipping sauce was a bit on the salty side, more like the Kanto region style, which goes well with sake. The mixed rice was also tasty. The lunch had a calm atmosphere, and overall it was a nice dining experience. I finished the meal by drinking soba broth.

We visited Soba Kobo Hoheito for lunch on August 12th. The atmosphere inside the traditional Kyoto townhouse was surprisingly calm and lovely. We were the only customers around 2 pm, so we enjoyed a beer in the cool air-conditioned space. They even served us some soba snacks. I ordered duck soba and dried young sardine rice, while my partner had tempura soba. The soba was light and fluffy, almost like watagashi. The tempura was also delicious with a light and crispy batter. The dried young sardine rice had plenty of fragrant sansho pepper, perfect for those who love the flavor. Overall, it was one of the best soba experiences I've had, and I regret not visiting sooner. The service was excellent, with attentive greetings and farewells, as well as friendly interactions during ordering and tea service. We will definitely come back. Thank you for a wonderful meal.

A couple in their thirties who love soba noodles. We searched for a good place to eat and found one with a traditional atmosphere, complete with tatami seating in a machiya-style building. However, it was a bit challenging for me with knee joint issues. The first time for me, but my husband said we had been here a few years ago, although I don't remember. We both had the Hoheto soba noodles, which came with chicken eggs instead of quail eggs. The broth was rich, which matched well with the noodles, although I found it a bit too strong for my taste. The soba noodles had a great flavor and were delicious even when eaten with wasabi. We visited on a Sunday after the Bon holidays around 12:30 pm, and there was only one other group of customers at that time.

Nearby, there is a delicious soba restaurant called Izushi Soba which is famous for its specialty dish. Other soba and side dishes are also delicious, but please note that they often have temporary closures, so it is necessary to check their Instagram in advance.

Visited on a Sunday after 12 o'clock. The interior of the restaurant is a traditional Kyoto townhouse with a nice atmosphere. However, the staff seemed lacking in energy and provided lackluster service. I ordered soba shochu with soba broth, dashimaki tamago, tororo-dashi on fried eggplant, tempura, and other side dishes. Each dish took an unusually long time to come out, causing a lot of waiting. Since it was lunchtime, I couldn't drink too much alcohol, so I tried to make do with two glasses of shochu, but I was left bored. The taste of the dishes that arrived sporadically was mediocre, and the long intervals between dishes became stressful. It took over an hour for the soba to finally arrive, but it was not worth the wait. The soba lacked flavor and aroma, and had a strong wheat flour taste. I would prefer the standing soba at Fuji Soba over this. While there are many delicious soba restaurants in Kansai recently, this place cannot compete with the quality in Kanto. And the last side dish that didn't come until after I finished my soba... When I asked the staff, they said, "We are serving it now." Since I was short on time, I declined and left the restaurant. For us Tokyoites, this was a wasted lunchtime in Kyoto with unappetizing soba waiting for almost two hours. This is not good at all.

I had to go to a hospital in Kyoto and decided to have lunch at a soba restaurant called "Hoheto" located a little east of Nishioji Shichijo Street. I prefer soba over udon. The restaurant is not very noticeable and not well-known, which I like. The interior, renovated from a machiya (traditional townhouse), has high ceilings and a calming atmosphere. You have to take off your shoes before entering, and the BGM is jazz, which is nice. I ordered zaru soba with tempura on the side. I'm not a fan of warm soba dipped in soup, so I prefer cold soba with hot tempura. The soba had a good texture and the soup was not too sweet. The tempura was slightly sweet, which paired well with the soba. Overall, it was a satisfying meal. The restaurant also offers a variety of sake and side dishes, so it would be a good place to visit for drinks in the evening. The karinto (sweet deep-fried snack) was delicious too. I hope more people, especially tourists in Kyoto, will discover hidden gems like this restaurant, away from the usual tourist spots. However, I hope it remains a quiet place for regular customers, so it doesn't get too crowded. Thank you for the meal. *This restaurant is non-smoking.

I went for lunch on a regular day. The restaurant is located on Shichijo Street. It's a soba restaurant that I've been curious about for a while, as my acquaintance often goes there. Upon entering the restaurant, you take off your shoes. On the first floor, there are wooden tables with four-person and six-person seating. The lunch menu includes options like tempura rice bowl set and mixed rice set, both served with soba noodles. You can choose between hot or cold soba. This time, I chose the tempura set with hot soba. The staff brought tea, a moist towel, and soba dipping sauce. The soba dipping sauce was delicious, making me crave sake. This time, I opted for no alcohol. The tempura included a large shrimp, seaweed, and fish cake. The rice was fluffy and the soba noodles were plentiful, with a gentle and flavorful broth. The aroma of the soba filled my nose. The lunch set cost 1000 yen.

Soba restaurant located along Nanajo Street (between Gozen Street and Nanahonmatsu Street). The reviews are not outstanding, but I was curious about it. I took off my shoes and entered the renovated Kyoto townhouse space. The traditional furniture gives a nostalgic feel. Sitting on cushions, I looked at the menu. They offer about 13-14 types of cold and warm soba. The side dishes range from typical soba restaurant items to those that go well with sake. Sake options include Echigo no Kanbai, Kubota, and Hakkaisan, showcasing Niigata's refreshing sake. As autumn approaches and it's getting cooler, I arrived by bike and was sweaty... so I opted for cold soba. I ordered the "Tempura Oroshi Soba (1100 yen) (cold)". Upon researching, I found out that they use Hokkaido soba flour, specifically the white part. They also adhere to the Edosaki style of "freshly ground, freshly made, freshly sieved". The soba had a smooth texture with minimal roughness and a clean soba flavor. The tempura included a large whole shrimp tempura, perfectly crispy. Lastly, the soba-yu was not thick but smooth, especially delicious with added dashi. Upon leaving, the proprietress bid me farewell with a bow. The delicate hospitality matched the soba. This hidden gem of a restaurant left a lasting impression. I look forward to visiting again in the future.
