In mid-November, I went to Kyoto to enjoy the autumn leaves and explore the city (including Nijo Castle, Myoshinji Temple, and Arashiyama). It was a weekday, so Nijo Castle and Myoshinji Temple were not too crowded, but Arashiyama was a different story. There were so many people there. I couldn't help but wonder how crowded it would be on the weekend... I ended up having a late lunch at this restaurant. It was located on the second floor of the commercial facility "Hannari Hokkori Square" at Arashiyama Station on the main street. Despite being on the main street, being on the second floor meant there was almost no line. However, there were about two groups waiting inside the restaurant. The menu mainly consisted of rice bowl dishes, as the name "Arashidon" suggests, and if you're not particular about Kyoto cuisine or yudofu, it's an easy place to eat. The restaurant had a surprisingly spacious interior with a capacity of over 100 seats. I was seated within about 5 minutes of entering, but I had to wait a bit because there were some empty seats around. The lunch menu had over 10 rice bowl options, such as Arashidon, Neba-Toro Don, Cajun Chicken Don, Seafood Don, Unagi Don, Sagano Don, Maguro Yukke Don, Salmon Yukke Don, Chicken Nanban Don, Pork Chop Rice, and oddly enough, Hanton Rice. Each rice bowl came with pickles and miso soup. I ordered the Arashidon (tofu, yuba, mizuna, ginger, ankake, kudzu) and Neba-Toro Don (tuna tataki, okra, nagaimo, natto, cucumber, quail egg, seaweed, wasabi). The rice bowls arrived quickly. The Arashidon was beautifully presented in a white porcelain bowl with two blocks of yuba and dried tofu arranged like noodles on top. The white bowl with thick ankake sauce, and the mizuna providing a colorful accent among the ingredients. It was a gentle and comforting flavor. The Neba-Toro Don was served in a large bowl with vibrant colors and intricate designs. My wife wasted no time mixing everything together and enjoying the rich and smooth texture. We shared both rice bowls and appreciated the difference in taste and texture. The prices were a bit high due to being in a tourist area, but that's the case for most restaurants there. On weekends, I imagine all restaurants in popular tourist spots would have long lines, but if you're not too picky, this spacious restaurant could be a hidden gem. Thank you for the delicious meal!
