Summary: Pork buns [2 pieces] for 380 yen each, with a diameter of about 70mm and a thickness of 35mm. The buns have a chewy skin filled with plenty of pork and onions. The sweet skin complements the savory pork and sweet onions. Of course, they go well with mustard too.

Before 5:30 pm on a holiday, there was no line for Ice Candy. When you enter the store, you will see the line for meat buns (and other freshly made items) straight ahead from the large aisle. Ice Candy is purchased from the freezer showcase a little further inside the store. You probably won't have to wait in line. My regular stay in Kyoto, Hotel Okura Kyoto, has a guest-only welcome lounge on the Kyoto Tower side of the station, where you can leave your luggage and enjoy complimentary drinks. As my Shinkansen departure time approached, I was unable to complete my mission of getting Horai, but the staff at Okura informed me that there is a Horai store in the Porta area just below the welcome lounge where you can buy without much wait. I quickly headed there and was able to purchase with only a few people in line! Horai Shumai 6 pieces for 450 yen. I love the simple and flavorful shumai made with pork and onions. They are soft and packed with deliciousness. (They are best consumed on the same day due to being hot.) You can also reach the Shinkansen platform through the underground passage from Porta, so I recommend the Porta store for those who want to get 551 Horai.

When it comes to 551, it's an image of Osaka, but you can also buy it in Kyoto. I couldn't resist and bought it as I passed by. I will enjoy it on the Shinkansen. It may smell like pork, meaty. It may be a love it or hate it situation, but that's why it goes well with mustard, and personally, I like it!

Unlike the crowded lines at the main Kyoto Station entrance, this place is a hidden gem where you can often avoid waiting. By microwaving it with cooking paper dampened with water, you can enjoy it as if it were freshly made and delicious!

There are three stores at Kyoto Station, but if you use the subway, the Porta store is easily accessible and relatively less crowded. Although it's not in Osaka, I can't help but buy souvenirs here. In the Kanto region, you can only buy chilled items, so freshly made items in the store are definitely delicious! Eating chimaki on the Shinkansen and having meatballs as a beer snack is my favorite. The meatballs are delicious and cheap, so they're my go-to. The pork buns make great souvenirs. Last time, I bought the limited edition matsutake mushroom chimaki, so this time I got the regular chimaki (pork and chestnut). While looking for Hyoryu in Kyoto Station on the way back from my trip to Kyoto, I happened to find an open shop at the Porta. I quickly purchased some meat buns.
