My mother brought back a souvenir from Kyoto, which is genmaicha with matcha. It seems you can sample various teas at a quaint store, but since this was a limited edition item, there were no samples available. Intrigued, I decided to take a chance and purchased it. The tea leaves and roasted brown rice have a great aroma and are good for your health too. You can even eat them as is, enjoying the crunchiness of the rice and the rich flavor of the tea leaves. Despite being genmaicha, the tea has a beautiful green color, and the brewed tea is also green. The nutty flavor of the brown rice and the sweetness of the tea blend perfectly. It was a delightful treat.

Located just a few minutes' walk from Uji Station on the Keihan Uji Line and JR Nara Line, this tea house faces the entrance to Byodoin Temple. It was established in the 10th year of the Bunsei era, which is quite surprising. You can truly feel the history in both the exterior and interior of the shop. You can enjoy a set of matcha and matcha yokan in the shop and in the courtyard on the premises. You can savor the richness and bitterness of Uji matcha slowly. The yokan is sprinkled with matcha powder, enhancing the intense matcha flavor. The regular tea served with the set was also delicious, made with fresh tea leaves. I felt like I was able to savor Uji tea thoroughly in a short amount of time and was momentarily transported to the past.

I visited to buy souvenirs in July 2019. It was the season for new tea, so I tried a sample of tea made from new buds only. It was very smooth, sweet, and delicious. I purchased it. - Uji New Tea First Flush I will continue to use this place when buying Uji tea in the future.

Next to the shop, I had a set of matcha and matcha yokan. The matcha was finely whisked and delicious. The tea box inside the store, which exudes a sense of history, is a must-see.

There is a shop called "Terajimaya Yahei Shoten" on the road connecting Uji Station and Byodoin Temple, where there are many fine tea houses and traditional Japanese sweet shops. I was drawn to visit by the chocolates displayed outside the shop. They offer two types of chocolates: matcha and hojicha, with hojicha being recommended. The shop is filled with the aroma of hojicha. However, since I am not very familiar with hojicha, I ended up purchasing the matcha chocolate. It cost 972 yen. The matcha chocolate had a nice bitterness to it. Although the price was high, the taste justified it. Overall, it was quite good.

During a visit in August and November 2016, I was looking for hojicha to give to a friend and happened to visit this shop near Uji Bridge. As soon as I entered the shop on the street in front of Byodoin Temple, there was a wide variety of tea lined up. On the right side, there were wooden boxes lined up. I was able to sample some of the teas. I tried the hojicha. Compared to other shops, the prices were slightly higher but definitely worth it. The hojicha had a prominent sweetness rather than a smoky flavor. When I later asked my friend who was comparing hojicha from different shops, they also mentioned that the hojicha from this shop was very delicious. If you are planning to buy hojicha, I recommend the one from this shop.

Wow!! The 7th installment of the Uji Byodoin Omotesando series is here!! Introducing "Terashimaya Yahyoe Shoten"! Located at Uji Renge 40-1 in Uji, this historical tea shop was established in 1827, making it 189 years old this year. The shop allows customers to sample tea at a counter and offers outdoor seating with roofed terrace tables. I ordered the Uji matcha with matcha yokan and the Uji matcha chocolates, both of which were delicious. The matcha had a smooth and slightly bitter taste, complemented well by the matcha yokan. The Uji matcha chocolates were made with Uji matcha and fresh milk, resulting in a creamy and delicious treat. The shop also offers various tea-related snacks for takeaway. The staff were friendly and provided excellent service. Thank you for the wonderful experience!

This is not a store like the Banban store in Kyoto Station, but you can immediately try the tea that caught your interest, including tea sweets. The staff is very friendly and will suggest various teas based on your preferences. I purchased the limited edition Kanbaon Fukuyoi. It was sweet with a hint of tea aroma, and even more delicious compared to Gyokuro. It may be the most delicious Japanese tea I have ever had. It costs 1620 yen for 100 grams, but I believe it is worth more than that. I want to stock up on it. A must-visit shop in Uji.

Established in 1827, this specialty store for Uji tea caught my eye with its traditional appearance. While many shops in the area have been modernized, this one maintains a retro look both inside and out. The interior features old, large beams that add to its charm. The staff kindly invited me to enjoy a refreshing cold tea at the quaint counter. My friend had already tried and purchased the seasonal "Iced Green Tea," which was quite popular. I also bought some unique Matcha Beans made from broad beans, a rare find that tasted delicious with a hint of matcha flavor. Afterward, we took a short ride on the Keihan Railway to Oubaku Station and visited the impressive Oubaku Zen Temple, known for its stunning lotus flowers and national treasures. It was a memorable experience.

I went to Uji to see the cherry blossoms! Along the Philosopher's Path towards Byodoin Temple, you'll find the standout Terashimaya Yaebei Shoten shop. Established in 1827, this traditional store is known for its unique blend of Uji tea, even featured in The New York Times. The exterior is so charming, and the tea they served was delicious and rich. The store also offers a black soybean roasted tea that was fragrant and had a refreshing aftertaste. Uji is full of old-fashioned tea shops with amazing flavors that you'll surely enjoy!

This shop stands out on the approach with a charming and distinctive appearance. It was featured in a special article on Uji tea in The New York Times, and its Edo-period style exterior and interior are worth seeing. Surrounding the counter from the Edo period are chairs where you can sit and have the staff introduce and offer you various teas for tasting. While you can sample tea in various shops in Uji, the tea here is the most delicious and has a wonderful aroma. To experience this, I recommend starting by tasting tea here when you visit the approach. After visiting Byodoin Temple, you can sample tea at other shops to appreciate the quality of the tea here. It is recommended to purchase the tea you like before leaving. The high-quality gyokuro and sencha teas brewed with water here are not often found at this price point. They will serve you various teas and provide guidance on how to brew them deliciously. It is enjoyable to sample tea during the season of new tea. You can taste the sweet and dewy flavor of the tea. When you come here, you can also experience the changing seasons. It's nice to leisurely explore and find your favorite tea, but the roasted green tea beans sold here are also delicious. When you first taste them, you will sense a slight bitterness along with the aroma of the tea, and when you chew, there is a subtle sweetness that is refreshing. The tea has a strong flavor, but it is not at all unpleasant. A bag costs 500 yen, but they will let you taste it as well. It is a very elegant tea snack.

I stopped by this shop on my way back from Byodoin Temple to buy some tea. I was disappointed that I couldn't sample any teas this time, unlike last time. However, the Uji tea here is reasonably priced and you can buy delicious tea.

【2022.08.15】"1283" I spotted a cool tea shop with a traditional look at the entrance to the shopping street (Monzen-cho) in front of Byodoin Temple. At first, I walked past the shop, but then I decided to go back and enter. Just like the exterior, the interior had a cool atmosphere with a sense of history. I purchased: ◾️ Matcha Senbei Sandwich - A combination of matcha tea and cream sandwiched between senbei crackers. ◾️ Matcha Chocolate - As expected, it had a strong matcha flavor. Personally, I think a lighter taste would be better. ◾️ Hojicha Chocolate - Personally, I liked this one. The friendly elderly woman who runs the shop was very welcoming and engaging, which added to the charm of the place.

We visited Byodoin Temple, Kamigamo Shrine, and then strolled down Omotesando Street. We found a tea house where we could enjoy matcha, so we decided to take a break. We had Uji matcha with matcha sweet jelly and roasted green tea for 700 yen. The matcha was delicious.

I had Uji green tea. It's from Terashimaya Yahyoe Shoten, established in 1827. It's a specialty store for Uji tea with a striking white-walled building from the Edo period. It's conveniently located near tourist spots like Byodoin Temple in Uji. The "Uji tea Kura Dashi Gyokuro" has a slight bitterness but a smooth taste. It's a rich tea that is quite delicious. It's a treat to be able to enjoy this since I wouldn't normally buy it myself.
