After staying at the hotel near Nishi Hongan-ji and enjoying sightseeing in Kyoto, I found a delicious teishoku restaurant nearby. About 200 meters from the back street of Nishi Hongan-ji, I discovered "Miyako Shokudo" here! They open from as early as 9 am, so you can have a meal even in the early hours. The prices are very reasonable and the food is incredibly delicious. The zenzai dessert after the meal and the mackerel sushi for takeout are all more delicious than their prices suggest. The best recommendation is the "ohagi" for 100 yen each. They are bite-sized, easy to eat, and come in two flavors - red bean paste and kinako (soybean flour). The texture is delightfully chewy and not too sweet. I instantly fell in love with this place. I am planning to do a "ohagi bulk purchase" for the New Year.

I went to eat at 9:30 in the morning. The restaurant is located near Kyoto Central Market and is open from the morning. I sat at a table and looked at the menu. Udon and soba were around ¥500, and I ordered a meat udon and 3 pieces of inari sushi. The staff at the restaurant were busy with preparations and serving customers. After a while, my order arrived. First, I tried the broth which had a nice balance of sweetness from the meat and the broth. The inari sushi was wrapped in a sweet fried tofu skin, which I really liked. The udon noodles were thin and soft, typical of Kyoto-style noodles. The meat and green onions were delicious. I added some shichimi spice to add some heat. The combination of the spiciness and the sweet inari was excellent. Thank you for the meal.

I arrived in Kyoto. The nearest station around Shimabara area seems to be either JR Tanbaguchi or Hankyu Omiya Station, but both are a bit far. I was thinking of trying noodles, rice bowls, sweets, or udon. But I got interested in the Kashiwa Mizutaki set meal from the menu strip. When traveling alone, I tend to eat only noodles, so it's better to go for a set meal if you're interested in it. The small pot looks really nice. The fact that it's covered is a key point. It looks delicious at first glance. There are plenty of Chinese cabbage, leeks, kashiwa, white radish, one block of tofu, and fried gluten, which is interesting. The taste of the soup is thick but light. To fully enjoy the flavor, savor the soup slowly. The hot Chinese cabbage has a crunchy texture, and the thick core part has a fruity taste. The soft leeks, when eaten with kashiwa, have a springy texture, and while there is that texture, the meat is tender and falls apart. I didn't use ponzu sauce, but if you're going to eat it with rice, ponzu sauce is recommended. It has a smoky soy sauce aroma, a strong acidity, but not too spicy. Finally, pour the soup over the rice and add ponzu sauce for an instant porridge-like dish. It was a luxurious lunch from noon.

I went to Miyako Shokudo in Hana-ya machi Nishi, Omiya. Both the customers before and after me seemed to be locals. There was alcohol disinfection at the entrance, and the spacious interior had good ventilation. My husband had ramen for 470 yen and tendon don for 540 yen. I had mochi udon for 420 yen and a small plate of rolled sushi with mackerel for 250 yen. My husband used to eat here often in the past and liked the ramen, but he was unsure if it was the same as before since it was about 40 years ago. The tendon don was one of his favorites among this type of diner. I tried a bit and it had a good flavor with rich shrimp tempura and egg topping. My udon was also good. The sushi on the small plate had a nice vinegar flavor that I liked. And most importantly, it was cheap. The staff at the restaurant was friendly and welcoming. It's a place I would like to have as a regular spot nearby. Thank you for the meal.

On a regular Wednesday at 10:10, the restaurant wasn't crowded, which was nice. It's great that they open at 9:00. I ordered a parent and child bowl for ¥540 tax included and a Keiran udon for ¥470 tax included, totaling ¥1010 tax included. The dishes arrived in just 6 minutes after ordering! Thank you for the meal.

Today's lunch was at "Miyako Shokudo", a popular diner located between Omiya and Minamikawa along Hanaya-machi Street. It has a historical exterior that exudes charm. It seems to be one of the shops in the Shimabara Shotengai. Tables are lined up, typical of a popular diner, with one person sitting at each table. The menu offers a variety of noodles, with udon priced at 350 yen. Above the menu, there are photos of what appear to be courtesans, fitting for Shimabara. They also offer rice bowls and set meals. I ordered the unusual "Kashiwa Mizutaki Set Meal" for 700 yen. The dishes are displayed in a glass case, and even the disposable chopsticks have a retro feel. When the meal arrived, it was in an aluminum pot, giving off a hot pot vibe. Upon lifting the lid, I found a simple meal of Mizutaki (chicken hot pot) and rice. It was served with ponzu sauce, which added a delicious flavor. The chicken was plentiful and flavorful, and the cabbage was soft and abundant. The ponzu sauce was so tasty that I was able to enjoy a genuine Mizutaki experience after a long time. I savored the retro deliciousness at this diner that exudes a sense of history.

Today, I visited this place for lunch. The restaurant was quite busy with customers. Even if you try to avoid the lunch rush, busy places are always crowded. The beef curry udon was only 520 yen! What a deal! It had plenty of meat in it. The udon noodles were thick and firm. The broth was a bit light though. Overall, it was delicious. Thank you for the meal!

I have been to this cafeteria many times. The atmosphere always feels like the customers are mostly older, drinking beer and eating udon. Personally, I come here for the sweets. But I always end up wanting to drink beer in the cafeteria atmosphere. So, I ordered the shippoku udon and noppé udon. The shippoku udon here is quite different from what I know. It doesn't have a lot of vegetables as toppings. It consists of dashi broth, sweetly simmered dried shiitake mushrooms, kamaboko, and wheat gluten. Noppé udon is udon noodles served with a thick starchy sauce made of arrowroot or potato starch. The thick sauce sticks to the udon noodles. For dessert, I had a kinako (roasted soybean flour) ohagi! It costs 100 yen each and it's definitely delicious! The sticky texture of the rice, the sweetness of the red bean paste, and the slightly salty flavor of the kinako are irresistible. I have already made a reservation to bring ohagi as a souvenir tomorrow!

On the middle day of the 3-day weekend, my wife and I strolled around Kyoto. We attended a memorial service at Nishi Honganji Temple, and to warm up our chilled bodies, we decided to have udon for lunch. We headed to "Miyako Shokudo" on Hanayacho Street. This was our third visit here. The restaurant offers delicious meals at reasonable prices. I recommended the "Keiran" (including tax, 470 yen) to my wife, who enjoys the flavor of ginger, and I ordered the "Fried Curry Udon" (same price). The curry broth with a rich dashi flavor was incredibly delicious. After finishing my udon, I thought about adding rice, but considering we would be eating more later, I decided against it today.

■Visit Date: December 26, 2019 ■Items Received: - Keiran (for me) - Rolled Sushi (for me) - Other People's Udon (for my wife) - Croquette (for my wife) I visited on December 26, 2019. It was after work today. This restaurant is close to home and offers delicious food at a reasonable price. Tonight, I had Keiran and rolled sushi, while my wife had Other People's Udon and Croquette. The total cost for both of us was around 1200 yen, which is quite affordable. And the food was delicious. I enjoyed the Keiran, a popular udon dish, which I didn't see much when I was in the Kanto region. The egg sauce with ginger was perfect. The soft udon paired well with it, warming me up from the inside out in this cold weather. It was a delightful udon experience. My wife's Other People's Udon, made with beef and eggs, was also delicious. The rolled sushi had a perfect balance of vinegar, and it was a tasty treat. Thank you for the meal.

I was guided to this restaurant by a friend who lives in Kyoto while walking around the city in a group. The cafeteria offers a variety of soba, udon, and rice bowl dishes at very reasonable prices. There were many dishes available for just one coin. Although it is a casual eatery, the hostess brought water to the table for everyone, rather than self-service. I had the herring soba for 500 yen this time. It wasn't the authentic soba you would find at a soba restaurant, but it had a homely atmosphere that felt like it could have been made by a grandmother in the countryside. However, the herring soba for 500 yen in Kyoto felt like a great deal. The herring was sweet and seasoned well, and it was delicious. The sushi rolls and inari sushi in the showcase also looked tempting. It seems that you can also have ohagi for dessert.

After visiting the exhibition at Ryukoku Museum, I went for lunch at the restaurant for the second time in two years. I arrived at noon and the place was almost full, so I was lucky to get a table right away. I was once again overwhelmed by the variety of menu options, but I ended up ordering the "Keiran" (430 yen including tax) and a single croquette (100 yen). The "Keiran" arrived after a few minutes, with its soup shining like amber and a delicate egg garnish on top. I carefully mixed the soup and udon noodles together and enjoyed the subtle ginger flavor. It was a delicious dish. The croquette, on the other hand, was just average.

■Visit Date: May 19, 2019 ■Items Ordered: - Beef Bowl (Me) - 3 Inari Sushi (Me) - Beef Hot Pot Set Meal (Wife) - Croquettes (shared by both) MEMO: Visited on May 19, 2019 for the first time. I had previously received ohagi from this place. Today, my wife and I went for lunch. This place is known for being cheap, delicious, and nostalgic. The restaurant only has table seating. I ordered 3 inari sushi and a beef bowl. My wife was surprised and said, "Are you sure you can eat all that?" I convinced her with some vague reasons like being hungry and having exercised in the morning. The simple inari sushi was surprisingly delicious and I could have easily eaten 10 pieces. Moving on to the beef bowl, it was flavorful with a generous amount of beef and green onions in a tasty broth. Once I started eating, I couldn't stop. My wife had the beef hot pot set meal, which also looked delicious. She was very satisfied with her meal. Lastly, the croquettes were crispy on the outside and had a nostalgic, simple flavor. I could have eaten many more. This place exudes a nostalgic charm and is loved by many. The atmosphere and the wide range of customers, from young people to elderly, make it a wonderful place. You can get a satisfying meal here for prices ranging from 300 to 600 yen. I wonder what I'll try next time... Thank you for the delicious meal.

I had the chicken karaage set meal for ¥630 and a bottle of beer (medium) for ¥500 at a traditional restaurant in Kyoto. The restaurant has six 4-seater tables, with 2 of them pushed together, and two 2-seater tables. The set meals start from ¥500 and udon is available for ¥330. I previously had the chicken sukiyaki set meal for ¥650 with a bottle of beer and two pieces of inari sushi. The restaurant is open all day, making it convenient. They also serve red rice, ohagi, and rolled sushi. It seemed busy during the New Year period, probably preparing for mochi. Mochi should definitely be bought from a mochi shop! It's a typical Kyoto-style restaurant. I hope these kinds of restaurants stay around for a long time.

Keiran Udon for 430 yen. Inari sushi for 80 yen each. When the dishes arrived in small bowls, I had a bad feeling. But in the end, it was unfounded. The udon was difficult to eat with the broth, but it was delicious. #Kake Udon #Udon typical of Kyoto

We visited Jinguma, Yasui Kinko Hira, Mibu-dera, and To-ji around 11 o'clock and had a Kirin beer in a medium bottle. We had saba sushi (with skin and without), two pieces of rolled sushi, two inari sushi, and a bowl of ramen for a total of 1,450 yen. The saba sushi had thick meat and sticky rice, really capturing the taste of Kyoto. The inari sushi had a nostalgic, light taste. Jinguma really liked it. The rolled sushi had a lot of dried gourd and was on the sweeter side. The salty pickled ginger added a nice touch. The ramen had thick noodles in a soft, clear soup with a Japanese-style broth that tasted like it had added chashu marinade, with a hint of pepper. The toppings included bean sprouts, green onions for flavor, two slices of fish cake, and four slices of chashu with a rich flavor. The wakame seaweed played a supporting role. It was a nostalgic and affordable meal. Jinguma mentioned that it would have been nice to try the ohagi as well while walking.
