There is an abundance of freshly shaved bonito flakes on top, so much that it overflows on the plate, giving a strong bonito flavor. You can enjoy three different tastes by following the eating instructions listed on the bonito flakes counter. I personally like it with rice topped with raw egg. I can easily finish a bowl of rice in no time, it's so delicious!

I ordered a set meal and it had an overflowing amount of bonito flakes. The bonito flakes alone were delicious, but when topped with an egg, it was beyond amazing! The portion size was just right for lunch. The first floor has a counter and the second floor has table seating, with a limited number of seats. They prepare freshly shaved bonito flakes, so it may take some time before it is served.

I made a reservation and visited for breakfast. When the bowl arrived, I was surprised by the amount of bonito flakes, but they were so delicious that I wanted more. It was tasty even with a raw egg, and the tea-soaked rice at the end was excellent. It was a bit disappointing that the taste of the seaweed under the tofu skin was strong, but overall I was satisfied. Thank you for the meal.

The bonito flakes were delicious, but there was a somewhat hectic atmosphere as the shops were lined up in a corner like an eel's sleeping place, so it couldn't be helped. There were two set meals, A and B, with the difference being whether or not a side dish was included. I chose the B set meal this time, but the side dish was yuba. Yuba was tasty, but if it's a 200 yen difference, I thought A set meal would be sufficient. The inside of the restaurant is filled with the pleasant smell of freshly shaved bonito flakes.

I had breakfast set B. The difference between A and B is that B comes with one side dish, which was yuba. The bonito flakes were really delicious. First, I tried just the bonito flakes, then I added the egg on top. It was tasty, but the bonito flakes flavor kind of disappeared. Lastly, I poured some dashi broth over it.

I visited a popular bonito flakes specialty store in Karasuma Oike, Kyoto. The store is located in a slightly hidden place off the Sakaimachi street. There are 6 counter seats on the first floor and 9 seats on the second floor. Reservations are recommended, but you can also wait by writing your name on the waiting board at the store. The menu consists mainly of two types of specialty meals, A set and B set, with almost the same contents. The A set includes bonito flakes over rice, soup, Kyoto pickles, and specialty egg. The bonito flakes are visually impressive, overflowing on top of the rice. The aroma and taste of the bonito flakes are delicious, especially when combined with soy sauce and rice. Adding the specialty egg yolk enhances the flavor even more. The meal ends with pouring dashi over the remaining rice, creating a unique flavor. Overall, it is a delightful experience to enjoy freshly shaved bonito flakes in various ways at this restaurant. The miso soup and side dish of the day were also tasty. Thank you for the meal.

B Set Meal ¥1100: Katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes) rice bowl, miso soup, raw egg, pickles, and side dishes. The thinly sliced katsuobushi piled high on top of the rice in the bowl allows the light to shine through, creating a visually appealing dish. First, try the katsuobushi on its own to savor the aroma and flavor spreading in your mouth. Crack the egg, pour special soy sauce, wrap it with katsuobushi, and enjoy a luxurious TKG (tamago kake gohan). Since there is plenty of katsuobushi, adding some to the miso soup enhances its deliciousness. Lastly, pour dashi over the remaining rice to enjoy it as ochazuke. It was delicious. 5.8

The bowl with plenty of luxurious bonito flakes and delicious egg was very satisfying, especially with the bonito broth poured on top at the end. There are only about 20 seats, and the owner operates the place alone, so the turnover rate is low compared to the speed at which customers eat. I didn't know you could make reservations, so next time I will make one.

I had always been curious about this restaurant. I had some errands nearby, so I decided to leave early and have breakfast at this place. It's not facing a major street, so I wasn't confident I could find it without a map app haha. After walking down a small alley lined with eateries, I finally found the restaurant! I was prepared to wait in line, but surprisingly, there was no one there... Could it be closed?! But no, they were open haha. I visited on a Monday around 9 am. There was only one person sitting at the counter when I entered... but then I noticed customers coming down from the second floor. I didn't realize they had seating upstairs too! There was only one staff member behind the counter, washing dishes and explaining the menu to me. The table, chairs, and floor were all covered in bonito flakes haha. I guess it's inevitable since they're so fluffy (^^) I ordered the B set meal with a small side dish. After a short wait, I noticed the staff member was still not done with the dishes... and there was no sign of my order being prepared. Then another staff member joined in, and finally, they started preparing my order. They seemed to be having fun, singing and chatting, which made me a bit uneasy... While waiting, my B set meal arrived. The bonito flakes were so fluffy! They were overflowing from the rice bowl onto the tray ✨ Let's dig in! First, just the bonito flakes... Oh!! This bonito flakes are not what I'm used to! They are incredibly fluffy haha. The rice seems to be clumped together... like it was left in the rice cooker for a while. So, it's not coming apart haha. Next, I tried it with soy sauce, like a rice bowl with raw egg. The bonito flakes clung tightly to the chopsticks, making it a bit difficult to eat. And since the rice wasn't coming apart, it made it even more challenging (^^;) Lastly, I tried it as a tea soup style. Finally, the rice came apart haha. Maybe I had set my expectations too high... or perhaps I just got unlucky. But the bonito flakes were delicious! Thank you for the meal!

I went there because it looked nice. I had a light meal at the hotel before, so it was quite tough to finish the meal. They shave bonito flakes right there and you can eat plenty of them. It's a bit difficult to eat, but this kind of menu is the best for breakfast!

This is a restaurant I found in Kyoto that serves a typical Japanese breakfast called bonito rice bowl. It's not specifically Kyoto-style since bonito flakes are not made in Kyoto, but it has a Kyoto-like atmosphere. The restaurant is located in a traditional townhouse a little north of Karasuma. It was quite busy on a holiday morning, with people lining up outside. I ordered the breakfast set which came with a side dish and raw tofu sashimi. The bonito flakes were piled high on top of the rice bowl. I wanted to make it into a raw egg over rice, but there were too many bonito flakes spilling over, so I had to eat some first. The service was good, but maybe a bit too much. The quality of the bonito flakes was good and the flavor was rich. It's probably popular because there aren't many similar restaurants around. Personally, I thought it was a bit too light, and I wished there were toppings like butter, shirasu (baby sardines), mentaiko (spicy cod roe), or something with a bit more indulgence.

Today I also worked at Shijo Karasuma, and as they say, "The early bird catches the worm," I woke up early and finally visited Sendo-san, a famous restaurant that has been featured in many media outlets. Upon arrival, they asked if I had a reservation. It's no surprise that this popular restaurant is fully booked even early in the morning! I ordered the B set meal with bonito flakes rice bowl, miso soup, Kyoto pickles, condiments, special egg, and extra rice for 1,050 yen. The bonito flakes are freshly shaved using a dedicated machine. In just 5 minutes, the meal was served! The presentation was amazing! The bonito flakes rice bowl, generously topped with Tosa Takenouchi Shoten's highest-grade dried bonito flakes, really lifted my spirits! First, I tried just the bonito flakes... delicious! This definitely makes a simple egg and rice bowl taste amazing. The side dishes and pickles also showed attention to detail and were all delicious! I tried the original way of eating by having the rice with just the broth instead of soy sauce and tea. The broth was irresistible! The dishes may be simple, but the ability to enjoy various flavors and the delicious taste are wonderful. The service was also polite and I felt well taken care of. I would definitely like to come back again. Highly recommended! At the end of a narrow alley. I had made a reservation so check-in was smooth. I was seated on the second floor, but the stairs and the space between tables felt a bit cramped (probably due to the limited store space). Water and such are self-service. The food came out quickly. The bonito flakes with a lot of red meat left on them were piled high, but the flavor was excellent, possibly because they were freshly shaved. They seem to recommend eating it three ways: 1) as is, 2) with soy sauce and egg, and 3) like a tea rice bowl with broth and condiments at the end. The soy sauce and egg go perfectly with it. The miso soup also has bonito flakes in it. The interior is clean but small, and considering that side dishes are included for 1,000 yen, I thought it was reasonable given the location.

I visited in the morning on a day off. I wanted to go to a nearby cafe, but it was full. There were only counter seats on the first floor. There seemed to be a second floor as well. I sat at the counter and ordered the "A set" (800 yen). The A set is simply bonito flakes on rice with soup, pickles, and a raw egg. The bonito flakes are freshly shaved and piled high. It tastes delicious when you pour soy sauce on it. After eating a bit, I added the raw egg, which was also delicious. It would be good if they offered free refills on rice, but even a large portion costs extra, so the cost performance seems quite poor. As a memory of Kyoto, it was delicious. Thank you for the meal.

I smoothly got a reservation through Hot Pepper Gourmet for April 22, 2023. I ordered the 1,000 yen B set meal. It came with freshly shaved bonito flakes so fluffy that I couldn't sneeze. I was guided to the second floor, and the server was careful not to let the flakes fall on the floor due to the wind. It was a bit difficult to eat as the flakes disappeared when mixed. I topped it with an egg, poured soy sauce, and enjoyed the simple taste. I turned it into ochazuke by pouring in a light dashi broth. There was a long line of people, probably because it became famous on TV, so I recommend making a reservation online. (The difference between A's 800 yen set is the absence of side dishes. I was disappointed not to feel the 200 yen worth of side dishes - a small dish with seaweed and tofu.) One visit was enough for me... Google review gets 100 yen off. Couldn't get in on a random day in March 2022, even though there were empty seats... Seems to be completely reservation-based?

It is recommended to make a reservation before visiting. On Sundays, there is a one-hour wait. Even after being seated, it takes about 20 minutes. There is a reception ticket in front of the restaurant where you write your name and wait to be called. It's best to visit when you have plenty of time. In simple terms, it's egg over rice with bonito flakes, and it's definitely delicious. The addition of bonito flakes enhances the flavor, making it even more delicious.

I visited this popular new restaurant by making a reservation. The first floor counter is very narrow with hardly any space between chairs, so it may be tough for larger individuals. Those without reservations have a long wait time. (Reservations can be made online, highly recommended. Note that only the 1000 yen set meal can be reserved.) As for the food, it has a visually appealing presentation and the bonito flakes are tasty (although a bit difficult to eat). It is recommended to eat it as is at first, then with rice topped with egg, and finally as ochazuke, similar to hitsumabushi. Personally, I felt that the broth lacked flavor. Reservations are prioritized and almost fully booked, so without a reservation on weekends, you may only be able to enter 1-2 groups every 30 minutes. It's a bit of a dilemma whether to line up without a reservation to try this dish. Personally, I might revisit if I have the chance and can make a reservation.

The Karamu no Setsudo, which was featured on TV, was delicious. It was served as is, then with soy sauce and egg, and finally as a dashi tea pickles. It may be a bit pricey, but it's worth experiencing at least once. It's probably delicious because they use high-quality ingredients. It's recommended to make a reservation in advance.

I had made a reservation in advance, so I was able to be seated right away. There were people who had not made reservations, but they were turned away because the restaurant was fully booked. I was really looking forward to it, and I was thrilled by the overflowing visuals of the bonito flakes bowl. The freshly shaved bonito flakes smelled so good. I took a bite without adding anything, and it tasted like regular bonito flakes. Then, even when I added dashi soy sauce and egg, it wasn't as impressive as I had hoped. To be honest, it seemed like something I could eat at home. I tried adding dashi to make ochazuke, but the flavor became too light, so I had to add more dashi soy sauce. The miso soup had no ingredients, and the small dish of yuba and seaweed salad? wasn't a taste I particularly enjoyed. If anything, the pickles might have been the most delicious. Maybe I just had too high expectations.

I saw this gourmet restaurant on a TV show and it was buzzing on social media, so I really wanted to go! After convincing my reluctant partner, we woke up early and headed to Kyoto. The restaurant is called "Bushidou" and specializes in bonito flakes. They serve a dish called bonito flakes rice bowl, topped with freshly shaved high-quality bonito flakes and a fresh egg to make a TKG dish. The restaurant is very popular on social media, and I can see why. We arrived early, but the morning session was already full, so we had to make a reservation for 9:30 am. The menu offers two options: A set and B set. However, only B set is available for reservation customers. The B set costs 1000 yen and includes the bonito flakes rice bowl, Kyoto pickles, specialty side dishes, miso soup, condiments, red egg from Kyoto, and tea pickles as a finisher. The bonito flakes were fluffy and danced on top of the rice, and the aroma was enticing. We were seated on the second floor, and although the atmosphere was simple, the food was delicious. Overall, it was a unique and enjoyable dining experience.
