Kyoto. In the city of Kyoto, along Karasuma and Shijo Street, at the southwest corner of Muromachi Street, I found this restaurant. I was looking for a lunch spot and happened to stumble upon it! The exterior looked like it was frozen in time, with a distinctly Showa-era atmosphere that made me stop in my tracks. As I entered the restaurant, the interior also had a strong Showa vibe. There was an LCD TV on the wall, beer taps, cases of bottled beer, newspapers, and magazines stacked haphazardly, giving off a truly old-school feel. I checked the menu on the wall and noticed a special explanation for their Chinese soba, which seemed to be their signature dish. However, I wasn't in the mood for ramen, so I decided to order the oyakodon instead. As I waited for my oyakodon, I noticed that the group at the next table all ordered the Chinese soba, making me wonder if I should have gone for that instead. The ramen bowls they received looked quite small, almost like they were for kids. I couldn't find a small or half-sized option on the menu, so I stuck with my original choice. When my oyakodon arrived in about 12-13 minutes, I found that the bowl itself wasn't small, but the portion was quite meager - only about half full. It was a oyakodon with scrambled eggs and chicken buried under the eggs, with very little chicken and a sparse amount of green onions. It tasted okay, but it was disappointing overall. Perhaps I got too caught up in the atmosphere of the place and set my expectations too high, but considering the price, portion, and quality, I was left feeling let down.
