Wara-san is a tofu hot pot restaurant that requires reservations. We visited after paying our respects at Wara Tenjin Shrine on Inu no Hi (Day of the Dog). My mother had been here 30 years ago and recommended the delicious tofu hot pot and ginger rice. The restaurant is located in a residential area in a standalone house. When we arrived at 12:30, we were told that they were fully booked due to walk-in customers. The interior felt nostalgic, like visiting a relative's home, with traditional tatami rooms and a garden. It was a bit cold inside, but we warmed up with green tea while waiting for our meal. We started with sesame tofu topped with real Japanese pepper and wasabi. I usually don't like Japanese pepper, but this one was tolerable. Then, a large pot of tofu hot pot arrived, filled with smooth tofu in a special broth that complemented it perfectly. It also contained cabbage, mitsuba (Japanese wild parsley), and yuba (tofu skin). After warming up with the hot pot, we enjoyed a variety of tempura including carrots, pumpkin, sweet potato, seaweed, shiitake mushrooms, and green peppers, served with grated daikon radish and dashi broth. The tempura was delicious, especially the carrots, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin. We then had grated yam and ginger rice, which was so tasty that we finished every last bite, despite feeling full. The rice was cooked with ginger juice, giving it a unique flavor. After the meal, we felt warm and satisfied. We were the only customers during our visit, but a few others were turned away due to not having reservations. The restaurant seemed to be busy with only one group at a time. The restroom was clean and modern, and there were low chairs for elderly customers in the tatami room. The parking lot was a bit hard to find, but it's spot number 66. We would love to visit again next time we pay our respects at the shrine.
