During a business trip in Kyoto, I visited a restaurant I had always wanted to go to. Located near Keihan Gion Shijo Station, the entrance and curtain exuded a traditional atmosphere. Upon entering, I was seated at the counter. The lunch menu featured various types of tempura rice bowls, such as conger eel and large prawn. The cold tea served at the beginning was delicious, and the female staff's service was excellent. I ordered the signature conger eel tempura rice bowl, which was fantastic with its crispy batter. There were several condiments available on the table, such as dipping sauce and sansho pepper, allowing customization to personal taste. The miso soup was average, but the pickles were exceptionally tasty. The ambiance of the restaurant, along with the sight of the chef frying tempura right in front of you, made it an enjoyable dining experience. I would love to visit this long-established tempura restaurant again.

The weather was nice, so I decided to visit Kyoto for the first time in six months. It was such good weather that I changed my mind about having ramen and decided to explore for something else. In the morning, there weren't many people around, but as it got closer to lunchtime, more and more people started appearing. I planned to eat quickly and leave, but then I saw the menu sign of this restaurant. Tempura bowl! I haven't had it in a long time. The restaurant had a Kyoto-style atmosphere and looked nice. There were about two groups waiting in line, but I decided to wait in the shade. I placed my order while waiting and entered the restaurant after about 10 minutes. There was a counter seat and one large table. At the table, there were about six school trip students having their meal. I waited on a chair inside the restaurant and then moved to the counter seat. I was facing the chef directly, which made me a bit nervous. After waiting for about 15 minutes, miso soup was served first, followed by the tempura bowl! It looked different from the usual tempura bowl...!! I ordered the mixed bowl. There were two large eel tempura and one shrimp tempura, all looking delicious!! I started with the eel... It was so plump and tasty! Fluffy too! Next was the shrimp... It had a firm texture and was satisfying to eat! I usually don't eat tempura bowls much because they make me feel heavy and I get bored halfway through, but this one was so delicious that I couldn't stop eating until I finished it all! I'm glad I trusted my instincts! I enjoyed it very much. The staff at the restaurant were also very friendly, and even though it was a short time, I felt refreshed both physically and mentally. I would love to visit this place again when I come back to Kyoto. Thank you for the meal! Thank you very much!

In the Gion and Kawaramachi area, there is a tempura restaurant. It is located in one of the busiest tourist spots in Kyoto. Reservations are available for dinner, but not for lunch, so be prepared to wait. I was lucky and only had to wait for about 10 minutes to get in. For lunch, they mainly serve tempura rice bowls, with the anago (conger eel) bowl being particularly popular. However, when I tried to order, the kakiage (mixed tempura) bowl was sold out, so that might also be a popular choice. This time, I ordered the mixed tempura rice bowl with anago and fugu (blowfish). The tempura was not the light and crispy type, but a more substantial one made with egg in the batter. It absorbed the tempura dipping sauce well and balanced perfectly with the rice. Of course, to enjoy the freshly fried tempura, I ate quickly. I sprinkled some sansho pepper halfway through, which added a delicious flavor. It was a delightful meal!

I went to Gion Tenju in Maruyama Park for hanami after a long time. It was a weekday, so I lined up a little before opening, but I was able to get in quickly. I ordered a mix bowl with blowfish, conger eel, and large prawns, and my stomach was completely full, haha. But, it was really delicious.

This was my first visit since going for tendon for lunch during my student days. This time, I made a reservation for dinner. As soon as I entered the restaurant, the pleasant aroma of sesame oil filled the air, and I looked forward to the course that was about to begin. In addition to the classic shrimp and conger eel tempura, the course also included oysters, scallops, and abalone, all at a very reasonable price. Everything was delicious, but the conger eel was especially tasty. Unlike the tendon I had for lunch, it had a strong crispy texture, and the fluffy texture and large pieces of conger eel filled my mouth with flavor, making me feel happy. With just the right amount of moisture locked in, I actually preferred this conger eel tempura to the one at a famous restaurant in Tokyo (known for its hard and crispy tempura). For my final dish, without hesitation, I chose the conger eel tendon. This dish had been dipped in tempura sauce, making the batter even softer and allowing for a more fluffy texture overall. The appetizers, seasonal simmered dish, and dessert were all delicious, not just the tempura. I realized it's actually a hidden gem and hesitated to post about it. I definitely want to visit again when I'm in Kyoto, perhaps trying it in a different season. Thank you for the wonderful meal.

Two friends (two men) went to the restaurant. They arrived just after the opening but it was already full. However, the turnover of seats was fast so the waiting time was short. They placed their order while waiting, so there was no wait for the food. The taste was as expected for a tempura restaurant. One friend even said, "You picked a great place!" As mentioned earlier, the turnover was fast so it was a bit difficult to savor the meal slowly. However, being able to eat this in the middle of Kyoto city, the cost performance was great without any complaints.※The photo is of the seasonal menu [pufferfish and conger eel mixed rice bowl].

Solo trip to Kyoto~♪ Lined up at 11:30 for the Anago Tendon (1350) and got the first spot in line. The Kakiage Don was sold out. The line grew quickly after that! They provide a special seasoning with shichimi, yuzukosho, and matcha salt on the table, which you can use to season your dish as you like~♪♪ Comes with miso soup and pickles, and there's also tea pods on the table (*^^*). The portion of rice is generous. The batter stays crispy even after some time, which was impressive♡♡ The sauce is elegant with a light sweetness, not overpowering at all (*^^*) The large Anago Tempura pieces, four of them, are well-balanced with the rice. The miso soup is subtly flavored but rich in clam umami! Delicious (๑´ڡ`๑) There are 9 out of 11 counter seats occupied, and one table for 4 people. Even if there are empty seats, they don't allow solo diners to sit, following a policy to seat groups of 2 or more. They serve Kyoto green tea, which is also delicious♡ By the time I left, there was a long line of 20 people waiting! With this portion size and quality at this price, it's no wonder it's so popular! A great find (*^^*)

Eel and blowfish special mixed tempura rice bowl for ¥1850. After having a lot of sweet treats, I was craving something salty, so my friend suggested a place they had in mind. We arrived just before lunchtime on a holiday and there were already a few customers waiting, but we were able to get in after about 30 minutes. There is only one table, so it's best to go in a small group. There were many options for tempura rice bowls, but I decided to try the seasonal limited edition with blowfish, as it seemed like the right time for it. The eel and blowfish were both large pieces, with two of each, and the portion size was generous. The meat was thick and juicy, and very delicious. However, personally, I found that the oil didn't agree with me, and I started to feel quite queasy halfway through. I had to share some with my friend and ended up leaving some uneaten, which I normally never do. I won't be returning as I realized that I don't do well with fried foods. If you plan on visiting this place, make sure your stomach is prepared for it.

Located right in front of the famous Yasaka Shrine in Gion, "Tenshu" is a place that truly embodies the essence of a tourist spot. I was intrigued by their tempura rice bowl, so I visited the restaurant as soon as it opened. However, it was already full, so I had to wait outside for 10 minutes before finally getting a seat, which took another 40 minutes. The long wait is understandable as they coat the ingredients with flour right before frying. If you're in a hurry, I wouldn't recommend it. I ordered the "Special Tempura Rice Bowl with Conger Eel and Blowfish." I wanted shrimp as well, but it was a bit out of my budget. The conger eel and blowfish were both tender and delicate, and they tasted great with the seaweed salt. The combination of the sauce, rice, and toppings was excellent. The wait was definitely worth it.

I had the Jumbo Shrimp Tempura Rice Bowl! It was a public holiday, so there was quite a long line. The staff were very friendly. The shrimp was huge and piping hot, and it was delicious!

Today, I visited Tenpou before going to Yasaka Shrine. When I arrived at the restaurant around 11:30, there was a line of about 8 people ahead of me. I waited for about 30 minutes. The interior of the restaurant was clean and cozy, making it a comfortable place to be. I ordered the mixed tempura rice bowl. It was served in about 10 minutes. The tempura was crispy and light, allowing the ingredients to shine. It was delicious. Thank you for the meal.

Autumn sunny day in Kyoto - seeking healing in nature, strolling from Yasaka Shrine to Kodai-ji Temple. Lunch was planned at a certain Italian restaurant in Karasuma, but despite being the second in line before opening, when asked, the staff said they were fully booked due to reservations... So we ended up at Tempura Tenshu, a complete 180-degree change. It had been a while, but the tempura used to be a bit fluffier back in the day. Thank you for the meal!

It had been about 10 years since my last visit. I arrived around 11:10 and there were already 3 groups of customers. By 11:30, more and more people were coming in. I ordered the limited edition Anago, Large Shrimp, and Fugu Mixed Tempura Rice Bowl (2,000 yen tax included). The texture of the Fugu was particularly amazing and delicious, even more so than the Anago and shrimp (which were just okay). Overall, I was very satisfied. I used to come here often for the Anago rice bowl, where a large Anago tempura covered in sauce would be placed on top of the bowl. Over time, the elderly owner has been replaced by the next generation, and the tempura pieces are now smaller and the sauce is lighter and more refined. It seems like the popularity of the place has increased, but I do miss the old hearty feel.

I ordered the "Anago Tendon" and it was served in about 10 minutes. As for the taste... the anago tempura was crispy on the outside after being dipped in sauce, while the inside was fluffy and moist, with a delicious flavor. Anago is usually known for its light and bland taste, but in this dish, the tempura added just the right amount of oil, making it perfect! I am a huge fan of anago tempura, and I was truly impressed by this dish. The sauce had a smooth and sweet-savory flavor. There was a sauce pot on the table, so you could add more sauce if needed. I couldn't get enough of it and ended up asking for more sauce! Despite the average reviews on this site, I can guarantee that this Anago Tendon, with three generous pieces of anago tempura at a reasonable price, is fantastic. The miso soup was also surprisingly delicious. I had a great dining experience in Gion. I will definitely be coming back for more!

I visited a nostalgic restaurant in Kyoto with an old friend. We couldn't get the tempura bowl we wanted, so we ordered an eel bowl instead. The crispy fried eel was delicious, especially when topped with matcha salt or extra sauce. The cherry blossoms along the Gion river were in full bloom, creating a beautiful sight. Overall, it was a satisfying meal.

I had heard rumors that the food was delicious and there were long lines, so I had high expectations. I finally had the chance to visit and ordered the tempura bowl with large shrimp, conger eel, and blowfish. It was just okay, nothing special. It tasted like a typical local diner. If it was reasonably priced, it would have been acceptable, but for the prices in Gion, it was not worth it. I wonder if they are targeting tourists with their business? It was disappointing considering the high expectations.

I had always wanted to try this popular restaurant. I waited in line for about 40 minutes on a Saturday afternoon to get in. The tempura was heavy with a lot of batter... I started to get heartburn after eating half of the shrimp. It was the first time I had to leave my favorite tempura bowl unfinished. Tourists may rate it highly due to the excitement of being in Gion, but there are better tempura bowls to be found in Kyoto.

Before going to Kyoto, I asked the big eater at work if he knew any delicious places, and he told me about this place where he goes every time! The volume to satisfy a big eater's stomach, I'm looking forward to it! I love tempura rice bowls, but I don't usually have the opportunity to eat them, so I decided to go and headed to Kyoto right away. When I got off the station and walked towards Gion, I found the restaurant lined up in the arcade street. By the way, the entrance was narrow and I didn't notice it at first, so I passed by once. The restaurant had an elegant yet slightly aged feel, typical of a longstanding tempura shop. Inside, the space was not very large, and the smell of oil spread out, with a counter surrounding the chef. I was guided to a seat at the back of the counter. The surroundings were filled with businessmen, couples, and groups of friends, and I noticed there was no one dining alone. However, halfway through my meal, a wonderful lady in a black tweed jacket, looking very capable, sat next to me and enjoyed her tempura rice bowl. I ordered the mixed tempura rice bowl with eel and pufferfish. I think it was around 1800 yen? When I ordered, they fried it right in front of me, making a delightful sizzling sound. After waiting for about 10 minutes, the dish was served. It was a generous portion! The aroma was amazing! My appetite was stimulated to the maximum. The eel and pufferfish were both fluffy and delicious. The rice was perfectly sweet. The sauce was not too sweet or too salty. At this reasonable price, I have no complaints. I left the restaurant feeling very happy.

A shop located just a short walk from Keihan Gion Shijo Station. The tempura rice bowl sells out quickly, so it's recommended to go early if you're looking for it. The tempura is filled with plenty of pumpkin and sweet potato, and the portion is huge. You need to eat well to avoid defeat. The tempura is fried crispy and delicious at this size.

Gion Tempura Tenshuya in Kawaramachi, Osaka. I had the Kakiage Tempura Donburi (1700 yen), a popular limited dish at this Gion tempura restaurant. The bowl was filled with crispy tempura prawns, small fish, pumpkin, sweet potato, and more. You can enjoy both the parts soaked in sauce and the crispy parts. It was delicious! Thank you for the meal.
