Today is the first day of the pre-festival of the Gion Festival in Kyoto. Last year, I gave up because it was too hot, but this year I mustered up the courage to come. I lined up for 200 meters to buy the Chimaki of the Naginata Hoko float, just managing to purchase it before they sold out. I also lined up to get a commemorative stamp on the packaging of the Chimaki, and then climbed on top of the Naginata Hoko float, feeling overwhelmed with emotion. Before I knew it, it was already lunchtime, so I headed to my usual spot, Kimura. I arrived 20 minutes before they opened, and there were already 8 people in line. At 12 o'clock, they opened! I ordered "cold sake 800 yen", "pork loin 3300 yen", and "rice 200 yen". I took a sip of the cold sake first - it was crisp and refreshing, perfect for someone sweating a lot like me. Then, I mixed lard, onions, broth, and water, added a bit of meat, quickly cooked it, dipped it in egg, and the deliciousness spread in my mouth. Next, I added tofu, green onions, shirataki noodles, and wheat gluten, placed some meat on top, sprinkled sugar, and waited while sipping on my sake. It turned out pretty good, although it was a bit salty this time. But it was delicious, so I'll let it slide. I enjoyed my meal today as well. Thank you for the delicious food.

I made a reservation in advance and visited my family's home for the New Year holidays. We had sukiyaki, which was delicious, especially the pork loin. It was a great experience cooking it ourselves, but be careful not to burn it, or it might not taste as good!笑

The menu is simple, with two options: 3100 yen for sirloin and 3300 yen for loin. The amount of fat is the same, but the loin is said to be more tender. There is a guide on the table on how to eat, and once the meat is served, everything else is self-service. This is probably why the cost performance is good, and it's nice that you can eat without feeling nervous. There are two slices of meat, so be careful of the difference in fat content! The atmosphere of the restaurant feels like you've traveled back in time, which is very nice.

I went on a food and cafe hopping tour in Kyoto, including sightseeing! After enjoying a sparkling soda parfait at Yamasina Coffee Plaza Marian Anne in Nishijuj, we returned to the hotel to wait for my husband to come back before heading out for dinner. We went to Sukiyaki Kimura in Kawaramachi, located in the Teramachi Shinkyogoku shopping street. The traditional exterior of the restaurant caught my eye, and I had always wanted to visit. Upon entering, we handed over our shoes to the shoe attendant and went up to the second floor. The atmosphere was old-fashioned, with several tatami rooms where many people were enjoying their meals. We ordered the Roast Sukiyaki for 3300 yen, the Regular Sukiyaki for 3100 yen, and two orders of rice for 200 yen each. The table was set with a pot and ingredients, and the rice was served in a wooden rice container. The sukiyaki was delicious, with the sweet broth complementing the meat and vegetables well. The Roast Sukiyaki had a more tender and flavorful meat compared to the Regular Sukiyaki. The meal was served with pickles, and the overall experience at the restaurant was nostalgic and enjoyable.

I took off my shoes at the entrance and was given a ticket without explanation. I went upstairs and waited on a bench with a few other people. When my number was called, I handed in my ticket and ordered lunch and roast sukiyaki with rice. The staff explained that rice is included in the lunch set but not with the roast sukiyaki. They provided instructions on how to cook the sukiyaki, which I followed closely. The roast meat was delicious and the onions were sweet and tasty. I finished two bowls of rice quickly. After paying, I was directed back to the entrance where my shoes were waiting for me. It was an amazing system. The restaurant had a nostalgic Showa era vibe, and cooking the sukiyaki myself was fun and delicious.

The lunch set was really cost-effective! It was fun to make it myself! The onions absorbed the flavor of the broth and meat, spreading the deliciousness in my mouth. The meat was also delicious. I didn't make a reservation, but I arrived around 12 o'clock and was able to get in right away. 🐻

I went to the restaurant introduced by Ravit, and it was amazing! The atmosphere was great, and the sukiyaki was both delicious and affordable. We ordered one serving of sukiyaki each and cooked it ourselves, which was so much fun that I forgot to take pictures. You can adjust the sweetness with sugar that comes with it. We ordered extra meat, rice, vegetables, beer, cola, and soda for two people for less than 10,000 yen. It was such a happy time! There were plenty of seats, so we didn't need a reservation, but the staff was a bit overwhelmed with cleaning, so we had to wait a bit. I recommend making a reservation! Also, since it's a tatami seating, it might not be suitable for those with bad knees. If you want to enjoy a nice atmosphere and affordable sukiyaki, be sure to visit this place! I will definitely go back when I visit Kyoto again.

I saw this restaurant featured on TV before and decided to make a reservation. It was during the Gion Festival period, but I was able to make a reservation for a weekend lunch. The restaurant has a traditional old-fashioned look, and the interior has a Showa era atmosphere which was nice. Some people might find it dirty and off-putting though. The sukiyaki is a DIY style where you cook it yourself, but they provide instructions so it was fun to do. I will definitely visit again.

I visited the Yoimoyama restaurant in Gion Festival's Ato-matsuri parade around noon. I arrived around 11:30 and was told by the staff that they would open at 12, so I asked if I could come back at 12 to eat, and they said it was fine. I decided to kill time on Nishiki Street. When I returned to the restaurant 10 minutes early, there was already a line of about 10 groups waiting! I thought they said it was fine. I waited for about 30 minutes. I had wanted to visit this place after seeing it on the NHK drama "Living in Kyoto for a While." The restaurant has a Showa-era atmosphere, with tables that also have a retro feel. The staff serving inside are all older gentlemen, with some younger women as well. The menu is not extensive, so they take orders efficiently. I ordered a lunch set for 2,200 yen and a beer for two people since it was lunchtime. The set was promptly brought to us, and the older gentleman gave us instructions on how to cook the meat, almost like a ritual. I had to ask a different female staff member for the beer as they seemed a bit uninterested. We added an extra serving of meat halfway through, but they didn't ask about preferences like sugar or eggs, so we just ate it as is. The dipping sauce was tasty, though. Overall, it's a reasonable and delicious place to eat, but the routine-like service might not be everyone's cup of tea.

Shijo-Tera-machi [Meidai Sukiyaki Kimura] is a long-established restaurant founded in 1928, with nearly 90 years of history. The retro atmosphere was fantastic! The lunch special, featuring domestically produced black wagyu beef sukiyaki, is quite reasonable at 2200 yen. I tried the sirloin, which was tender and flavorful, making it easy to see why this place has been loved by many. I would definitely want to visit this restaurant again when I come back to Kyoto.

I made a reservation over the phone, but it's first come first serve. When I arrived at the restaurant at 12pm, the person who answered the phone, maybe the owner, was at the entrance on the first floor to help with shoe storage. After taking off our shoes, we were guided to the second floor unless we were a large group. The seating area was spacious but the waitstaff seemed overwhelmed. After waiting for about 20 minutes, a younger male employee joined in and things started moving faster. I ordered a large bottle of beer and a beef sukiyaki rice set. When my beer was finished, I ordered warm sake. The younger employee asked the owner if they could do warm sake, and it was possible. The food was served promptly. I finished with pickles and a sukiyaki bowl. The rice portion was just right.

The shop exudes a strong Showa era vibe. I chose the higher-priced roast option over the regular one. With rice included, it came to 3600 yen. It was delicious! In terms of cost performance, it's a bit questionable as you get three very thin slices of meat for this price. However, it's tasty so it might be worth it for a trip!

The menu only offers sukiyaki with either sirloin for ¥3,300 or regular beef for ¥3,100. The meat quality is not great, a bit tough, and lacks fat. The broth is tasty though. The cooking method seemed different from the usual Osaka style, which was a bit confusing. I was concerned about the hygiene rather than the age of the place.

Walking along Shinkyogoku Arcade, there is always one shop that stands out and seems out of place, like it belongs to a different era. This made me curious, so on a Saturday afternoon, I went with a friend. We arrived around 12 o'clock and had to wait in line for about 20 minutes before entering. The interior of the shop was very Showa-era, with menu items written in a retro style, a rotary phone to place orders, and even a sign for "Bayaris Juice". The atmosphere was quite nostalgic and comforting. We ordered two servings of lunch and beer, which included sukiyaki with rice set. The sukiyaki was a DIY style, with instructions provided on the table. It was a bit challenging for us as beginners, so the first bite felt a bit bland. As it cooked further, the flavor of the broth soaked into the vegetables and meat, making it more delicious. However, despite being tasty, I couldn't really distinguish it from sukiyaki I make at home. The ambiance and history of the place were impressive, but the taste was just average. Perhaps we didn't cook it properly...

I visited with my girlfriend after making a reservation in advance. The old building was well-maintained and had a charming atmosphere inside. There were instructions on how to cook the sukiyaki, so we could cook it with peace of mind. The sukiyaki sauce and egg were extremely rich, so I wanted to have more rice, but it was a bit expensive so I decided not to.笑

It's a traditional shop. It feels like stepping back in time. It's not easy to find a place where you can order a full serving of sukiyaki for one person, so it's great for solo travelers. The service was polite and good. Some parts of the meat were a bit tough. Thank you for the meal.

I entered the restaurant around 4 pm on a regular Wednesday. It was my third time visiting and the food was delicious, so I always come back when I'm in Kyoto. Since it was an odd time, I was the only customer. The restaurant only has table seating, so it's better to come at a different time if you're dining alone. I ordered the pork sukiyaki with rice and oolong tea. Be careful, the rice is served separately. The style here is DIY, so dining alone can be quite busy. Rubbing the fat, adding vegetables, putting in the meat, and so on. It's a fun and busy experience. I hope to eventually eat more gracefully. The taste is absolutely delicious!

Just beyond this street is Mishimaya. This time, I lined up at Kimura's. There are many young people waiting here. Mishimaya is fully booked. I ordered the loin for ¥3300 per person. I think this meat is a great value for this price. However, it's self-cook style, so it might be difficult for foreigners, although it's fine for Japanese people. I wanted to help the foreigners with cooking, but it was too late as a lot of water had already been poured in. What a shame! Mishimaya is recommended for foreigners.

I came to Kyoto, so I decided to visit Sukiyaki Kimura, a restaurant that represents Kyoto. I arrived before 7 pm and waited for about 40 minutes before being seated. It was very Kyoto-like to have someone take care of our shoes at the entrance. Once inside, we were guided to the second floor where a red carpet led the way. Shortly after, we were shown to our seats. The waitress took our orders without writing anything down, relying on her memory instead. It was quite impressive. Within 5 minutes, our drinks and sukiyaki arrived. As expected, there was a mistake in our order, but the waitress's response was amusing. As others have mentioned, it is a self-service restaurant. We cooked the sukiyaki ourselves on a small pot on the stove, starting with onions, leeks, white konjac, and tofu, followed by meat on top. We then poured in the sauce and added sugar, before finally adding wheat gluten and trefoil. I prefer less sweetness, so I used less sugar. The sauce itself is not as sweet as the Kanto style, so perhaps that's why sugar is added. The meat was quite fatty, which personally I would have preferred a bit less of.

You can easily reach this sukiyaki restaurant on foot from Kawaramachi Station, so you won't get wet in the rain. The atmosphere is nice, and I was able to enter smoothly after lunchtime. You have to take off your shoes, so be careful with your socks. It was a self-finishing style.

I went during the day on a regular day. I ordered the lunch set for 2200 yen. I cooked the meat according to the instructions on the sheet. The meat was good quality for the price of 2200 yen! By cooking the meat separate from the vegetables, it turned out tender with a flavorful taste. The set came with rice, egg, onion, green onion, shredded konjac, fried tofu, and grilled tofu. It's a great deal for this price! Thank you for the meal!
