Located in Gion, Kyoto, "Senmonten" is a specialty shop that serves bite-sized gyoza. Established in 1987, this shop is operated by "Yakiniku Sakai Holdings Co., Ltd.," which also manages various other dining establishments such as "Yakiniku-ya Sakai." It was selected as one of the top 100 gyoza shops by Tabelog in 2019. The shop is a 6-minute walk from Gion-Shijo Station, situated along Hanamikoji Street. Parking is available at nearby coin-operated parking lots.
I visited the shop on a Friday evening around 8:30 pm. The place was quiet with only two other customers present. The menu mainly consists of two types of gyoza - regular and shiso gyoza, along with side dishes like cucumber pickles, rice, drinks, and set menus that include gyoza with rice and cucumber pickles. I ordered one serving of each type of gyoza.
The regular gyoza (10 pieces) cost 540 yen (tax included). These bite-sized gyoza have a unique flat shape, making them easy to eat in one bite. The shop uses garlic powder instead of raw garlic to minimize the smell. The filling is made with domestic beef, pork, cabbage, and leeks, with a higher ratio of vegetables. The gyoza are crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and have a subtle garlic flavor with a hint of spiciness in the aftertaste.
The shiso gyoza (10 pieces) also cost 540 yen (tax included). These gyoza are filled with plenty of shiso, giving them a vibrant green color and a strong aroma. They have a lighter taste compared to the regular gyoza, with a unique and addictive flavor. Both types of gyoza were so delicious that I finished them quickly and regretted not ordering more.
I have been exploring gyoza restaurants in Kyoto recently, and so far, this is my favorite gyoza place in the city. Highly recommended! Thank you for the wonderful meal!

I visited this restaurant on my food tour in Kyoto. The small dumplings were gentle on my stomach after all the eating. Despite their size, the dumplings were flavorful and delicious. I enjoyed them with a beer. Thank you for the meal!

Located on Hanami Koji Street, near a famous dumpling specialty store called Hohei, which is also nearby. This place is also known for its delicious dumplings, but it was relatively empty on this weekday at an early hour. Apart from alcohol, the food menu consists of dumplings, shiso dumplings, boiled dumplings, pickled cucumbers, clam soup, and rice. The dumplings and shiso dumplings are priced at 550 yen for 10 pieces, which is quite reasonable. Although the dumplings are on the smaller side, you can easily eat 20-30 of them. I had 10 regular dumplings and 10 shiso dumplings this time. I was questioning myself about eating dumplings when I had plans to meet someone the next day, but these dumplings have a hint of garlic flavor without being overpowering, so the smell isn't too strong. The recommended miso sauce was delicious, but I personally prefer the classic vinegar and soy sauce. The rice comes with free furikake with sansho pepper, which was surprisingly tasty. Overall, the dumplings were great and I ended up eating them before the rice without any regrets.

Today, I visited a famous one-bite gyoza restaurant in Gion, Kyoto called Sui Monten. They recently added a new menu item - boiled gyoza with clam soup, and they also offer free Sansho pepper rice. I started with a draft beer and some delicious cucumbers from a famous pickle shop in Kyoto. The cucumbers had a great crunch and perfect amount of salt, making them a great pairing with beer. Next, I ordered some pan-fried gyoza and the new boiled gyoza. The boiled gyoza was topped with chopped green onions and a mysterious white powder, then drizzled with sauce and hot oil for a unique texture and flavor. For dessert, I ordered a small bowl of rice with the amazing Sansho pepper topping. I intended to finish my meal with the rice, but the delicious Sansho pepper topping made me order three more lemon sours. Overall, the cucumbers, gyoza, Sansho pepper rice, and drinks were all excellent. I ended up having about 10 drinks in just an hour. Kyoto is truly the best!

On the last night in Kyoto, I decided to visit Gion to try the shiso gyoza that I had been curious about. They don't take reservations, but I managed to get a table. I started with a bottle of Kirin beer and ordered the shiso gyoza (20 pieces for ¥1,100), regular gyoza (10 pieces for ¥550), and cucumber pickles (¥300). The cucumber pickles were a great appetizer with the beer. The shiso gyoza was delicious with a hint of shiso flavor, while the regular gyoza was crispy and tasty with miso sauce. I also ordered the water gyoza (10 pieces for ¥1,100) and a lemon sour (¥490). The lemon sour was refreshing, and the water gyoza was different from what I expected but still delicious. It was a great way to end my last night in Kyoto.

On the second night of Kyoto food adventure, we headed to Gion. He doesn't talk much and doesn't reveal what we'll eat until the last minute, which makes it even more exciting. We hurried off the bus and walked quickly to our destination, "Senmonten" Gion main store. It turned out to be a dumpling restaurant, a hidden gem in Kyoto known for its dumplings. We, dumpling lovers, ordered cucumber pickles, shiso dumplings, plain dumplings, and Kirin beer to start. The place didn't take reservations, so we wanted to get in as soon as possible. Everything we ordered was delicious and went well with the beer. The cucumber was tasty, the bite-sized dumplings were easy to eat, the shiso dumplings had a unique flavor, and the plain dumplings were perfect. The beer and lemon sour were also great. He ordered water dumplings, which looked different from what we expected but didn't disappoint. After a satisfying meal, we strolled through the streets of Gion in a slightly tipsy mood. Kyoto, a place I wanted to visit again as an adult. I'm so glad I could come here.

During the cherry blossom season, we strolled through Kiyomizu Temple, Maruyama Park, and Yasaka Shrine before attending the 110th-anniversary celebration at Gion Yoshimoto for only 110 yen. We stopped by this gyoza specialty restaurant late at night. Despite a wait of over 30 minutes, we managed to get a table in the relatively small restaurant with only four groups seated. The staff promptly cooked our order of 60 gyoza for three people - 40 fried gyoza, 10 shiso gyoza, and 10 boiled gyoza (which unfortunately sold out after we ordered). The gyoza was delicious, and they also offered takeaway options for the raw gyoza. The rice with pickled cucumbers and shredded mountain pepper was a nice complement to the meal. They had a variety of beers available, including Asahi Super Dry and Tsingtao. Overall, this long-standing gyoza restaurant in Gion offers great tasting food and excellent service.

On a Tuesday night during cherry blossom season, I enjoyed a quick drink and some gyoza at this place. I had 10 regular gyoza for 550 yen, 10 shiso gyoza for 550 yen, a lemon sour for 490 yen, and a whiskey highball for 490 yen. The gyoza were on the smaller side but had a crispy and firm skin that was very enjoyable. The shiso gyoza had a nice aroma from the large shiso leaves. It was a refreshing experience! I feel lucky to have had some time off recently.

If you have come all the way to Kyoto, you would want to visit many delicious restaurants. The first place I chose to visit was this restaurant. I arrived 5 minutes after the opening time on Saturday. There were 2 groups of customers already seated at the counter. We ordered water dumplings, fried dumplings, and shiso dumplings. My companion had oolong tea, while I had a draft beer. The water dumplings arrived first, with chopped green onions and sauce on top. The taste was not particularly outstanding, but the texture of the dumpling skin and the sauce had a satisfying harmony. Next, the fried dumplings and shiso dumplings were served together. We were recommended miso sauce for the fried dumplings and vinegar soy sauce for the shiso dumplings. The miso sauce had a slightly sweet white miso base that complemented the smooth filling and crispy skin of the dumplings. I could taste the garlic, but it wasn't overpowering. It added a nice touch to the flavor. The shiso dumplings were refreshing, with the vinegar soy sauce enhancing the overall freshness. I felt like I could eat more and was tempted to order more, but considering my stomach, I decided to wander to the next restaurant. Thank you for the meal.

Both traditional and non-traditional gyoza were delicious and I ordered multiple servings. Even with multiple orders, the price was very affordable, which is a great thing about gyoza. It's wonderful that the restaurant mainly focuses on gyoza on their menu. There are also highly rated gyoza and ramen shops nearby in Kyoto, so exploring the Gion area for food must be enjoyable.

☆彡In the Gion area where traditional famous shops and trendy new stores gather, Hanamikoji is known for its maiko and geisha. The street is lined with old tea houses with red lattice windows and the nostalgic atmosphere of Gion. Chibigyoza has been popular since the Showa era, offering thin-skinned, bite-sized dumplings. Many people love the dumplings here. In my younger days, I could eat 100 of them, but on this day, I ordered the famous thin-skinned dumplings and boiled dumplings for a light snack with drinks. Of course, dumplings go well with beer, so I ordered: - Gyoza (40 pieces for 2,200 yen) - Boiled dumplings (10 pieces for 1,100 yen) - Cucumber pickles (300 yen) - Kirin Classic Lager Beer (medium bottle for 590 yen) The flatly connected bite-sized dumplings have a low moisture content, allowing them to fit tightly together, forming a crispy surface. Once you start eating, you can't stop. The dumplings are steamed and have a fluffy texture, with a crispy outer layer. Despite their small size, the filling has a sweetness from the pork, and the garlic is cooked just right, giving a subtle and elegant flavor. This place is perfect for a quick bite and drink, as it specializes in dumplings only. Enjoy! (^ω^*) I also have an Instagram account @ginjirou.star.

Located in Gion Shijo, this dumpling restaurant has a unique atmosphere. They offer two types of pan-fried dumplings: normal and shiso. They also have boiled dumplings. I ordered the cucumber pickles for 300 yen while waiting for my dumplings to cook. The dumplings here are garlic-free and bite-sized, making them easy to eat. Next, I tried the boiled dumplings for 550 yen, topped with plenty of leeks. Although there is no broth, the dumplings are flavorful yet light. The meat in the dumplings is made from Kyoto Tanba, a brand of pork called "Kyoto Pork." They also offer takeout. These dumplings were truly delicious and easy to eat!

When you think of dumplings, you think of Senmonten. It's not just a place to stop by, but maybe a good place for a snack or a finale. It lacks the impact of the original meat juice in dumplings. It has a crispy snack-like feel. A one-of-a-kind dumpling. Not necessarily delicious, more like a feeling of eating sweets. I occasionally crave it. It might not be a place you go out of your way to eat at, but if it's near where you're drinking, it's a place that draws you in. The cost performance is unbeatable. Thank you for the meal.

I visited at 6:00 pm on the weekend and was lucky enough to be seated without waiting, but other customers who arrived later had to wait outside. The dumplings are bite-sized and easy to eat in one bite. I ordered regular dumplings, ginger dumplings, and boiled dumplings, and the ginger dumplings had a strong punch and were delicious. They go perfectly with beer.

Gyoza specialty restaurant established in 1987 in Gion Shijo, Kyoto. They specialize in bite-sized gyoza, which can be enjoyed without messing up your makeup. The gyoza here does not contain raw garlic, making it popular even among geisha. The restaurant faced financial difficulties in the past but is now operated by the Nagoya yakiniku restaurant Sakai. Bite-sized gyoza is also popular in Osaka and Hakata. The gyoza here is made with domestically sourced beef and Kyoto pork, seasoned with garlic powder, spices, and a mix of peppers. The filling is rich and flavorful, with a good balance of vegetables and meat. The gyoza is wrapped in thin, crispy skins made from Chinese cabbage and chives. The side dish of cucumber pickles complements the gyoza well. It's a delicious and affordable option for a meal or snack.

In the Gion area, you can enjoy bite-sized delicious dumplings at the popular restaurant "Gion Gyoza Izumi Mon Ten Kyoto Main Store". Established in 1987, this local favorite is known for its bite-sized dumplings. The menu includes regular dumplings, shiso dumplings, boiled dumplings, cucumber pickles, clam soup, and rice. Each serving of dumplings comes with 10 pieces of small-sized dumplings. The boiled dumplings are served with leeks mixed with chili oil, and the cucumber pickles are simple yet delicious. Since they do not use raw garlic, these bite-sized dumplings are popular among women and geisha. This gyoza specialty shop is a popular spot for those looking to enjoy bite-sized dumplings with drinks in the evenings in Kyoto.

Headed to "Senzamon Ten-san" in the Gion area of Kyoto!! I thought they were open all day, but it turns out they have separate daytime and nighttime hours. Please be aware that they open at 5:00 PM for dinner. I tried to have lunch there at 3:30 while checking their website, but they were closed... Sometimes things like that happen. Afterwards, I took a chance on another restaurant and luckily it was open, so that's where I started. They serve bite-sized dumplings made with Kyoto pork, available in regular and shiso flavors, as well as water dumplings. The dumplings have a crispy exterior and a perfect balance of filling inside. They are delicious and definitely live up to their reputation. The bite-sized dumplings loved by geisha are a perfect size for women to enjoy in one bite. Thank you for the meal. I will definitely visit again. Note: When I arrived a little after 5:00 PM, there were empty seats at the counter. More customers started coming in after that.

I visited on Friday night. I thought it might be crowded, but there were no other customers. The counter was a bit high, maybe it used to be a bar. I had regular gyoza and shiso gyoza, both were simple but delicious. The gyoza was exceptionally tasty. The shiso gyoza had finely chopped shiso in it.

We had a second party at a dumpling specialty shop in Gion, Kyoto! One-bite dumplings were originally made small so that geisha and maiko could easily eat them. For agents who haven't been to Kyoto much, we walked from Pontocho to Gion, crossing Shijo Ohashi Bridge. It's a sightseeing tour! We had a blast and even though we have work tomorrow, we're eating dumplings! Masks can be convenient in some situations. Agents Kato and Waki from Hiroshima finally arrived, making a total of 6 people. We ordered 80 grilled dumplings, 40 shiso dumplings, and all-you-can-drink bottled beer. Thanks to the one-bite dumplings, we devoured 120 dumplings with ease! Still not enough, so we added 30 water dumplings. Even though we were full, there's always room for dumplings, right? It was delicious! Thank you for the meal!

Visited the famous gyoza restaurant "Senmonten" in Gion. Tried the Shiso Gyoza (¥540). The gyoza at "Senmonten" is known for its small size, perfect for even a Maiko's small mouth. The skin is not too thick or too thin, just the right amount of chewiness. The crispy texture on the outside is just right, not too burnt or bitter. The filling is very green, almost all shiso leaves! The shiso flavor is strong and stands out, as they do not use garlic or chives, resulting in a lack of greasiness. I visited about 3 years ago, and it was even more delicious than I remembered. Will definitely come back again.
