麻くら
This day was just the beginning of the rainy season, and it was raining since the morning. I had made plans to have lunch with a friend, but the rain didn't stop, so we ended up leaving later than planned. We arrived around 12:30 on a Saturday. The restaurant is located inside the Kyoto University Uji Campus. I thought the bike parking would be in the back, but we were allowed to park in a visible space from the street. I had thought the restaurant was inside the Kihada Hall, so I ended up circling around the hall before realizing the entrance was closed. I thought it might be a holiday, but then I saw the glass-walled restaurant above my head (laughs). The restaurant was actually in a building next to the Kihada Hall. There is a passage from the street that leads directly to the second-floor restaurant. The weather wasn't great, so the seats were mostly empty. We were told to choose any seat we liked, so we chose a seat in the back corner. The building has glass walls on three sides, so you can enjoy the outside view. But it might be too bright on sunny days. We ordered the daily lunch special (720 yen) with a salad. You can choose between bread or rice. I chose bread and added coffee or tea for an extra 200 yen. The daily special menu for that day included chicken cutlet with demi-glace sauce, pork and winter melon stew with yuzu pepper, and mato dai and fish mousse beignet with tomato sauce. I thought we had to choose one from the three, but they all came on one plate. It was nice to be able to try three different dishes at once. The portions were actually quite reasonable. The salad was served on the same plate as the main dish. It included shredded cabbage, potato salad, and tomato. The potato salad was delicious. The dressing on the cabbage was too sour for my taste. Among the main dishes, the chicken cutlet was the most delicious. I had expected chicken breast to be dry, but it was juicy and tender. My friend enjoyed the fish dish. The pork and winter melon stew was very flavorful with a strong yuzu pepper taste. It had a mature flavor. The bread was reheated and had a crispy surface, which was delicious. I realized after finishing the bread that they had forgotten to provide a wet towel. I wish they had offered one as I was eating the bread with my hands. They were attentive to refilling water, but they might have forgotten about the wet towels. I hope they will remember to provide them in the future. Even though we had finished our meal, we still had room for dessert, so we ordered the dessert of the day (260 yen) and some tea (200 yen). The dessert was a caramel gateau, a dense sponge cake-like sweet. It was just the right size and price for a post-meal treat. The taste was also delicious. However, the tea was brewed too strong and was a bit bitter. It started raining again while we were eating, and since we didn't want our bikes to get wet, we stayed and chatted until the rain stopped. The glass walls allowed us to watch the rain while listening to piano music playing Ghibli songs, creating a calm atmosphere. As it got later, more customers arrived and then left. In the end, the rain stopped about two hours after we entered. We ended up staying longer than expected. It was a leisurely afternoon in the rain, and we had a pleasant time. Thank you for the meal.
