I had lunch at Ethan's after a long time. The restaurant is located just a short walk from Imadegawa Station on the subway. In Kyoto about 15 years ago, there were only a few Thai restaurants, and they were either very expensive or limited to dates or girls' nights out, so there were few places where you could casually dine alone. Ethan's was one of the few places back then. The dishes used to be very authentic, and the spicy dishes with chili peppers would make you sweat uncontrollably as you ate. However, recently they have become more mild when served, allowing customers to adjust the seasoning themselves later. While the buffet was popular in the past, I have been ordering the Khao Soi set more often lately, and I did the same this time. Khao Soi allows you to choose between chicken and pork, and I chose chicken. The dish comes with plenty of chicken. The soup used to be much redder and would make you sweat a lot as you drank it, but recently it has become milder, allowing you to enjoy it until the end. The set also includes fried rice, steamed chicken, and salad. The fried rice is about half a portion, with a simple and lightly seasoned flavor with eggs and green onions. It tastes delicious even when you pour the Khao Soi soup over it. The salad is also less sour and easier to eat than before. I arrived at the restaurant around 12:00 on a holiday, and it was almost full, but I managed to get a seat just in time. After that, groups of university students, solo diners, and elderly couples continued to arrive and had to wait. The prices are affordable, up to 1500 yen, making it easy to dine casually. The Khao Soi set, for example, was 1100 yen. It used to be 950 yen, so there has been a price increase, but it is still reasonably priced in my opinion.
