When I went to Kyoto, I always go to this place for breakfast instead of a traditional morning meal. I usually drink a lot the night before (lol) so this gentle and soothing udon is perfect for me. It's made by a noodle factory so it's cheap, fast, and delicious. There are chairs and tables set up in the parking lot, it used to be more plain but it's gradually improving. Recently, they even started selling Early Rite merchandise (lol).

The restaurant is called "Hayatei," which means it opens early in the morning. It is an udon noodle shop that seems to be inspired by the famous Sanuki udon shops. There are seats set up in what looks like a parking lot, and you can see them making the noodles next to it. You order at the counter, pay when you receive your food, and get your own water. After finishing your meal, you return your tray to the designated area. I had the vegetable tempura udon for 700 yen. The udon noodles were fluffy, and the clear broth was delicious.

I visited the restaurant around 9 am on a weekday. It was not crowded, perhaps because it was a good time to visit. I ordered my mother's egg drop udon with an extra serving of noodles. The food arrived quickly. The soup had a gentle taste with a Kyoto-style dashi, and the udon noodles had just the right amount of firmness, not too chewy. Personally, I'm not a fan of Sanuki udon which is known for its firmness, but the noodles here were thin and soft, making them easy to eat. The way the noodles mixed with the soup was also good (though this is a matter of preference). The location is convenient, so I would like to visit again. Thank you for the meal!

I found a udon restaurant that was open after 10 o'clock. They were serving kitsune udon with shrimp tempura for only 800 yen including tax, which is quite cheap. The Kansai-style light soy sauce broth was smooth and went well with the udon, making it very delicious.

A famous udon restaurant known for opening from 4 am. I ordered their recommended dish, "Okā-chan's Udon", by placing my order through the window at the back covered with a vinyl curtain. "Okā-chan's Udon" is what you would call a "udon with egg", perfect for warming your belly and heart on a cold day. The udon noodles are thin and soft, lacking firmness, typical of Kyoto style. You can also order the noodles and broth separately.

Having breakfast with friends~♩♩
In the morning, I'm usually sleeping, so it's rare for me to be eagerly waiting for breakfast at this time. That's why I was drawn to this place called "Hayatei" because of its name. I arrived at the shop on my scooter and the atmosphere was really laid-back and nice. Looking at the menu, the "Mom's Udon" topped with egg caught my eye. Of course, I had to order it! But it's a bit disappointing that everyone just calls it "egg udon" instead of using the lovely menu name. After a short wait, my dish was ready, and I went to pick it up and pay. The rest was self-serve. They had free toppings like shichimi and tempura bits, which was great. The udon was very gentle and Kyoto-like, with a soft texture and a gentle dashi flavor and aroma. The fluffy egg was comforting, perfect for the slightly chilly day. The tempura bits added richness, making it a very satisfying breakfast. And all of this for only 500 yen (although I heard it will soon be raised to 600 yen)!

There is an udon restaurant that opens from 4 am, as the name suggests. It seems to be operated by a noodle factory, as you can also buy just the noodles. It is popular among locals. The opening hours are from 4 am to 1 pm. The prices are reasonable! I visited around 11 am and ordered the egg udon. It had a gentle and flavorful broth that warmed me up on a cold day! The ordering process may be a bit confusing, so here is a tip: it is mostly self-service. You place your order at the pick-up and refund counter. When your order is ready, you will be called, and you pay to receive your food. After finishing your meal, return your dishes to the drop-off counter.

I wanted to eat udon from the morning, so I went to a restaurant. At the entrance, there are recommendations and daily specials displayed. The entrance looks like a garage, with 4 open table seats and a large table seat at the back, with a small window further back. You order from there. When the food is ready, you exchange the food for the money. There are tea, tempura crumbs, and condiments placed on the side. This time, I had meat udon with small rice noodles, which is medium-thin noodles, a type of udon typical of Kyoto. The broth is fragrant, making it a true udon. The meat is cooked sweet and tender, deliciously paired with chopped green onions. Adding some spice for extra heat. After savoring the soup, the aroma lingers in the nose. I repeated this until I finished the soup. You can choose 1, 2, or 3 servings of kettle udon.

Visit on August 23, 2022: Okaachan no Udon (Tamago Toji) - 500 yen
Kyoto Trip Day 6
Good morning. On the second day of my Kyoto trip, I snuck out of my hotel to visit a Kyoto udon shop. They are open from 5 am, but I heard they used to open at 4 am until recently. When in Kyoto, you can't miss udon, especially Tamago Toji (udon with raw egg). This place is run by a noodle manufacturer that supplies udon to udon shops and restaurants. They have been in business since the Taisho era! Seigoin in Higashiyama is known for its high-quality underground water, which is used to make the noodles. The combination of the noodles and broth made with this water is excellent. The fluffy egg with smooth noodles, green onions, fish cake, and simple flavors are delightful. The noodles are soft and the broth is clear with Kansai-style dashi. It's amazing to have such a gentle udon dish in the morning.

[Curry Udon]
[Noodles] Thin noodles
[Toppings] Fried tofu, onion, meat
[Preparation time] 15 minutes
The curry udon comes with a side of rice and has a curry broth with a rich flavor and a hint of spiciness. It's unique to have fried tofu in it, adding a sweet touch. It could also be good with tempura flakes. The rice comes with a small amount of kelp and a strong taste of sansho pepper, making it delicious enough to finish on its own. By the end of the meal, you will surely be satisfied!
[Okaachan's Udon]
[Noodles] Thin noodles
[Toppings] Beaten egg, chopped green onions, fish cake (2 slices)
[Preparation time] 15 minutes
The udon has a soft texture typical of Kyoto style, with a gentle broth that becomes more enjoyable as you eat. Customize it with tempura flakes or shichimi pepper according to your preference. On a side note, there was an incident with a regular customer blocking the parking lot entrance, but the staff did not address it. Despite this, the staff assured that parking was available when asked. It's frustrating to deal with such customers who don't follow common sense.

On a regular Thursday at 6:40, there were no customers at the restaurant with parking space for two cars, which was nice. I had the Chinese ramen for ¥600 including tax and the curry udon with a small bowl of rice for ¥700 including tax. The total bill was ¥1300 including tax. It was a satisfying meal.

I had a good night's sleep after walking a lot yesterday ^_^ I took a morning bath and headed to a restaurant. Unlike Osaka, there are fewer places open early in the Kansai region. The restaurant is located near Kyoto University Hospital with parking space for two cars, which was available so I went in. There were four other customers already there. I had a hard time deciding on my order as they didn't have burdock tempura, squid tempura, grated yam, or round tempura. So, I ended up ordering "kitsune udon" for 600 yen. Udon in Kyoto tends to be softer, especially the thinner type like this one. I'm not a fan of morning ramen, but morning udon is quite good. Good meal!

The restaurant is open from 5 am to 1 pm, serving curry udon. It's a self-service style, but if they have time, they will serve the food to your table. The price is reasonable for using domestically produced wheat. The green onions are from Kyoto, and while it doesn't have the same firmness as Sanuki udon, the soft texture is characteristic of Kyoto udon.

Early morning noodle adventure on Friday, March 4th was a visit to "Kyoto Seigoin Early Tei Udon" in Kyoto, Shiga as part of a noodle journey using the Seishun 18 ticket. This udon shop is located in Kyoto, Seigoin Renkazukura-cho, in the left side of the city. It is a semi-self-service udon shop attached to Taniguchi Seimenjo. The ground floor terrace of a building that looks like a garage has table seating. There is a counter and table seating enclosed by vinyl sheets at the back. Since it is a noodle factory, noodles for takeout are also available for sale. Before entering the vinyl sheet house, grab chopsticks and tea. Inside the vinyl sheet house, there are table seats like this. I ordered the "Mother's Udon" for 500 yen, which is a hot egg-drop udon with kamaboko and Kujo green onions on top. The medium-thin and chewy udon is not pre-boiled but freshly boiled, with just the right amount of firmness. It's called "Ginjo Udon." I enjoyed delicious udon early in the morning and was very satisfied! Oh! Look, En-san is here, and the person next to him has won the title of "Human National Treasure" and even Kakuno Takuzo-san is here too! For breakfast, I had my mom's udon. The fluffy egg topping makes it feel like something my mom would make. I added tempura bits and sprinkled some sansho pepper for a Kyoto touch. It has a gentle flavor. The fluffy egg and hearty udon make it feel like a satisfying meal. I think next time I'll try the meat udon. Today was a day of delicious discoveries.

I went to Hanaari Udon in Kyoto, Seigoin Hayatei Udon (Udon at Heian Shrine) on February 20, 2022, at 18:25. I visited Hayatei Udon! The shop has a challenging closing time of 1:00 pm, making it quite difficult to visit. I decided to take advantage of a day off from work to go on a Saturday, expecting it to be crowded. The shop, located in a corner of a noodle factory, has 4 indoor seats and about 6 outdoor tables for 2 people each. It might be a bit tough to sit outside in this season, but eating hot udon in the cold can also be enjoyable. I placed my order in advance, received my udon, and paid at the same time. Tea, tempura bits, shichimi spice, and sesame are self-service. I ordered the "Okachan Udon" (500 yen). It looks delicious with plenty of green onions and scrambled eggs. First, I tried the broth. Ah, the flavorful broth is delicious, slightly sweet and comforting. Then, the udon. It has a gentle texture, smooth and soft, with a chewy elasticity. It feels like eating udon with a maiko's delicate mouth. The fluffy scrambled eggs complement the udon and broth perfectly, and the tempura bits add a nice depth of flavor. I enjoyed the warm and comforting bowl of udon, feeling happy and content. I look forward to waking up early to visit again.

On the second day of our trip to Kyoto, when we returned to our room, my husband suggested going to a nearby udon restaurant. Without researching, I followed him to a place called "Kyoseigoin Early Morning Udon," which opens at 4 a.m. It was a noodle-making factory with no proper seating, just chairs outside or inside a tent in the garage. We decided to try the tempura udon, which was only 100 yen per serving. I was initially unhappy about the situation, but my husband sensed it and brought water and chopsticks for me. The tempura udon was soft and delicious, and I managed to finish half with my husband's help. I prefer softer udon over chewy ones, so I enjoyed it. However, I questioned whether it was worth going out of our way to visit this place during our short stay in Kyoto. Thank you for the meal.

I went to Kyoto for the first time in 10 years. I saw on social media that the best way to tour Kyoto is to first have udon here and then go to Kiyomizu Temple, so I came here for reference. The parking lot in front of the shop can fit two cars, which was convenient. It seems like this is a shop run by a noodle factory. I ordered the most popular "Okaachan Udon" and my friend ordered "Oke Udon". Up to three refills are free. The udon with flavorful broth was perfect for a cold morning, warming both the heart and body. It's good because it's morning, but I wish the udon was a bit firmer... It's a shame because the broth is delicious! But I learned that it's typical in Kyoto to have udon without much firmness. It felt strange to have udon without much firmness for the first time, but I realized that it's common in different places. It's a matter of preference. Thank you for the meal.

In the morning, the udon restaurant "Kyoto Seigoin Hayatei Udon" near Jingumarutamachi opens at 4 am, perfect for early risers. Their specialty "Mother's Udon (Tamago Toji Udon)" recently increased in price from 400 yen to 500 yen. Despite the price hike, it's still cheap. The udon noodles are soft and chewy, almost like freshly made. I noticed that the noodles are from the adjacent Taniguchi Seimenjo shop, which explains their deliciousness. The gentle broth and fluffy tamago toji swimming in it are also delicious. Having this in the morning makes me feel happy. By the way, in front of the restaurant is the Egawa Power Plant, a location from the works of author Tomihiko Morimi.

There were no customers when I arrived at the restaurant at 7:20 on Saturday. Later, several families came in. We ordered chilled noodles for 700 yen including tax and curry udon for 700 yen including tax. The total bill was 1400 yen including tax. The chilled noodles arrived in 7 minutes after we ordered. It was my first time trying chilled noodles. Thank you for the meal.
