I went there for lunch on a regular day. It was my first visit, so I was confused about the system, but the staff helped me figure it out. I chose my own side dishes and put them on a tray to take to my seat, and the staff will write down the order for you.

Murakami Shokudo. This is a diner located about a 10-minute walk from Tanbaguchi Station in Kyoto! They open from 5 am, perhaps because there is a market nearby ✨ It's a self-serve style where you can choose your favorite side dishes. It has a traditional, well-loved atmosphere in the local area, and I was surprised at how cheap the drinks were even when enjoying alcohol ☺️

From morning, I wandered around the Central Market Fish Market under construction, which made it a bit hard to navigate. So, I decided to have breakfast and ordered a ramen set for ¥750 (excluding tax). It was a Kitakata ramen called "Asa Ramen." The noodles were thick and curly, with a chewy texture. The soup was soy-based, with a hint of seafood flavor. The toppings included char siu with a slightly burnt taste, crunchy bean sprouts, thick wakame seaweed, fish cake, and fresh chopped green onions. I also chose a side dish from the pre-made selection for ¥150, which was grilled salmon with a sweet glaze. The rice was served in a small bowl and was a bit too soft for my liking. It was a delightful experience visiting the Central Market again after a long time.

Chicken teriyaki for 300 yen, rice (small portion) with plenty of ingredients, miso soup for 250 yen. The cafeteria has an old-fashioned style. The chicken was delicious.

I attended a seminar at Kyoto Research Park and had lunch there. I ordered the sashimi set meal for 900 yen. The sashimi included albacore tuna and octopus. It also came with tamagoyaki, pickled Chinese cabbage, miso soup, and rice. I have a sensitive palate, so the miso soup was too hot for me to drink at first. The rice was plentiful but a bit too soft for my liking. The tamagoyaki was freshly made and delicious. As for the albacore tuna, I didn't find it particularly tasty. However, the octopus was crunchy and incredibly delicious. Overall, my expectations may have been too high, so it was a bit underwhelming.

This is a cafeteria located inside the Kyoto Central Wholesale Market. It is about a 2-minute walk from Sanin Line Tanbaguchi Station. Please be careful as forklifts may be moving around the area, especially in the early hours. There are no pedestrian walkways, so you have to pass by the side of trucks carrying vegetables. It seems to be a cafeteria for people inside the market. I'm not sure about the parking lot. The restaurant has 4 tables and smoking is allowed. The menu includes set meals, but you can also add individual dishes to your order. In addition to the main dish in the set meal, there are options like dashimaki for 300 yen, cold tofu for 150 yen, and grated yam with egg for 300 yen. I had the "Sashimi Set Meal for 900 yen" this time. It included albacore tuna and conger eel. Conger eel seems to be a Kyoto specialty. I've never seen conger eel in a sashimi set meal in other places. The rice was surprisingly delicious, with a nice sweetness to it. Perhaps they use good quality rice. And the portion was generous, which was nice. The albacore tuna came in 4 pieces, easy to eat and fresh. The conger eel was blanched, although I wish it was served raw. It had a bigger portion compared to the albacore tuna, but the small bones were a bit bothersome. The miso soup had green onions and tofu, with a standard level of flavor. The dashimaki seemed to be warmed up in the microwave, but it was served quickly and warm. There was also cucumber pickles. The cold tea served was in a small jug. Maybe it's bigger than usual because in hot Kyoto, people tend to drink quickly. If you're thirsty, you might finish it in one go (laughs).

In Kyoto Central Wholesale Market, there are many shops open from early in the morning, and on this day, I visited Murakami Shokudo for the first time. There is also a "Murakami Shokudo" nearby (up from Shichijo Shichihonmatsu), I wonder if they are related? Inside the shop, there are tables lined up in the old-fashioned style, with 4 people per table. The atmosphere is a bit dim, and there was an older man running the place alone. In front of the counter, there are many side dishes and sashimi lined up. It is common in the market to choose your favorite dishes from there and make it into a set meal. I chose "mackerel simmered in ginger" from the various side dishes and had it as a set meal. The set meal consisted of the main dish, rice, miso soup, pickled cucumber, and rolled omelette with dashi. The mackerel simmered in ginger was very large. It was quite fatty and the seasoning was not as salty as I expected, so it went well with the rice. The miso soup had only tofu as an ingredient, and the miso was a bit light, making it watery. Perhaps choosing sashimi would leave a more lasting impression in the market (of course, it depends on the shop). For breakfast in the market, I prefer the set meals or rice bowls at "Jarinko Shokudo" or "Wakaba Makino"!

I went for the first time with a friend. The restaurant was open from early in the morning, so we arrived at 5 am. There were two older ladies running the place. There were many menu options on the wall, including ramen, rice bowls, and set meals. I ordered the morning set meal, which included rice, raw egg, miso soup, and one side dish for 400 yen. You choose the side dishes from the counter and the price is determined by the number of items you choose. The taste was average, but I would go back because they open early. I forgot to check their regular holidays.

As usual, after finishing work early in the morning, I went to have breakfast in the city center. This time, one of my colleagues wanted to join, so we went together. This colleague is a big eater, so I had to come up with a strategy before visiting the restaurant. Before heading to the restaurant, we strolled around the market, I explained various things, and then we stopped at a croquette shop where I made my colleague eat 5 croquettes. Suddenly, my colleague said he wanted to eat ramen, so I took him to a ramen shop with the same name and we agreed to meet later after he finished eating. Finally, I entered a small restaurant with table seating only and ordered the "Dashimaki Tamago Set" that I had decided on beforehand. The set included a large portion of dashimaki tamago, a simple side dish of dried daikon radish and radish with fried tofu, a medium-sized bowl of rice, and a miso soup with two types of tofu and chopped green onions. The restaurant offered a convenient system where you could choose from various dishes to create your own set meal. Next time, I plan to try different combinations. My colleague, who had eaten 5 croquettes earlier, was surprised when he received only coins as change after I had given him two thousand yen bills. Ah, the wonders of youth...

Visited on July 14, 2012 (Saturday) around 10:20 in the morning. No customers before or after. The entrance leads to the kitchen area with various dishes displayed on tables. You can choose your favorite dishes. If you order a set meal, for an extra 300 yen, you get rice and miso soup. Noodles and rice bowls are ordered separately. Today being the second Saturday, it's the market day at Chuo Market, but during the summer months, the Food Market is suspended, and only related businesses hold sales. The building where this restaurant is located, "Related Building No. 5," is very quiet as not many people visit. Next to it, there's a toy store selling various fireworks, giving a summer vibe. I checked out the dishes, but the grilled fish was a bit pricey, so I opted for the "Meat Udon for 470 yen." The udon noodles were decent, but the meat portion was a bit small. The broth had a good flavor, but the seasoning of the meat didn't suit my taste. The phone number on the outdoor sign is not in use as the owner mentioned they changed it due to receiving nuisance calls asking about business hours. It seems they are not concerned about tourists, focusing solely on market-related customers. Slowly but confidently, I made my way through the market.

When it comes to markets, truck drivers from all over the country gather and unfold a mix of emotions there, making it the center of food. I quite like the unique atmosphere of it. I remembered that there are still a few undiscovered eateries in the Kyoto Central Wholesale Market near my home, so today I decided to visit the closest one from the entrance of the Gojo Shichijo market. The system here offers a variety of noodles and rice bowl dishes other than ramen, and you can choose side dishes displayed on the counter or in the refrigerated case. For an additional 250 yen, you can add rice and miso soup. I chose the most basic option, grilled mackerel. The grilled mackerel set meal costs 600 yen. It's a fairly ordinary set meal, but what I found a bit different was that the grilled mackerel was topped with a sweet and savory sauce. I wonder if this is a Kyoto style or unique to this restaurant. I should have asked. Come to think of it, it was my first time trying it. Also, the miso soup had a strong bonito scent, a true Kyoto touch. It's simple but well-balanced in flavors.

This restaurant is located in the Kyoto Central Wholesale Market, right near the Sanin Main Line Tanbaguchi Station. I arrived before 6 am today and walked around the market a bit. One thing I noticed was that unlike other markets, there are no fences or walls separating the market from the surrounding area, and the market is formed along the railway tracks in a long and narrow shape. I asked market staff for recommendations on where to eat, and they mentioned a few cafes and a ramen shop called Ishida Shokudo, which is famous for its ramen. There is also Iseya Shokudo, but it seems that only Murakami Shokudo is open at this time. Since there were no reviews for Ishida Shokudo, I decided to try this restaurant without any reviews. The restaurant has only 4 tables and 16 seats, and near the entrance, there are pre-made side dishes and a refrigerated case with fresh flatfish sashimi (800 yen) and yokowa (young tuna). The menu includes noodles, grilled fish, and rice bowls, and the restaurant has been operated by a family for over 40 years in this area. Today, I ordered a tempura assortment (250 yen) and a set meal (300 yen) from the menu. The tempura included sardines, green beans, potatoes, eggplant, and oysters. There was tempura sauce available, but it was a bit light in flavor. The tempura was lightly reheated in the microwave and tasted decent. The rice was on the softer side. The miso soup was not made with Nishikyo miso, which was a bit disappointing. There were a variety of side dishes, and considering the low prices, I think this is a good restaurant for everyday dining. This restaurant is registered on the store list and this is my first review.

It's been quite a while since I went to "Murakami Shokudo" in the morning. It's a traditional cafeteria where you can get set meals with noodles or choose side dishes from the showcase and eat. The main reason I visited this time was for their ramen, which is a rare Kitakata ramen in Kyoto. The ramen set comes with ramen, one side dish for an additional 160 yen, and a small portion of rice. I picked up natto as a side dish and upgraded to a medium portion of rice for an extra 50 yen, thinking that more rice would be better when eating natto. However, the rice portion was unexpectedly large. I'm sure at other restaurants, the large portion would have been a lot more, as the person ahead of me ordered a large portion and was surprised when it arrived. The ramen had medium-thick curly noodles with a rich flavor, although I can't compare it to Kitakata ramen as I haven't had it before. It was delicious and had that satisfying taste of eating ramen in a cafeteria. Despite the rice being too much, I managed to finish it along with the natto. If the rice portion is this large, I should have added mentaiko or pickles. I look forward to enjoying this place occasionally in the morning.
