On Fushikoji Street, there is a porridge shop called "Menamichan's Porridge Shop." Under the travel sky, after maybe drinking a little too much last night, this is what you need in the morning. It's a warm bowl of porridge that is gentle on your tired stomach. Good morning! I visited around 10 o'clock, after the morning rush of breakfast had settled down. Even so, there was a steady stream of customers coming in. I sat at the counter and placed my order. Menamichan's Porridge Shop offers various porridge options, including the classic chicken porridge and seasonal porridges. I chose the seasonal porridge with sea bream and seaweed. Each order is freshly cooked and served in a small white bowl with the toppings. The porridge was hot and full of flavor. The seaweed added a delicious umami taste to the dish. It felt like a hidden gem in the bustling Fushikoji Street. I recommend stopping by for a delightful meal. Thank you for the delicious food.

I visited for a late breakfast on a holiday around 10 am. The restaurant was about half full. The menu I ordered at the counter upon entering was as described in the order summary.
- Chinese chicken porridge + simmered ginger sardines + simmered hijiki (including tax 1,270 yen) Rating = ○
[Porridge]
The porridge is made with a Chinese-style chicken broth base. It comes with boiled egg, white leeks, and deep-fried lotus root among other ingredients. The boiled egg has a strong star anise aroma, giving it a Chinese flair. Condiments include minced meat miso, Okinawan shrimp, and garlic chives soy sauce. The garlic chives soy sauce adds a punchy soy sauce flavor for a pleasant taste variation.
[Simmered Ginger Sardines]
The ginger-simmered sardines have a strong ginger flavor that effectively masks the fishy taste of the sardines. The sardines can be eaten whole, including the bones.
[Simmered Hijiki]
The simmered hijiki has a soy sauce flavor. The texture of the soybeans adds a nice crunch.
- Five-grain rice porridge + dried daikon radish (including tax 950 yen) Rating = △
[Porridge]
This is a basic porridge made with five-grain rice. It is lightly seasoned and comes with pickled plum, kombu, and leeks, but the flavor is mild, so condiments like soy sauce, white radish and kombu, and salt are provided for seasoning. I seasoned it myself.
[Dried Daikon Radish]
The dried daikon radish has kombu in it, which gives it a strong broth flavor.

Located on Fushimi-koji Street, just below Shijo Street, is a newly opened specialty porridge shop called Chukagayu. They offer Chinese-style porridge, Japanese-style porridge, and seasonal recommended porridge, all of which can be enjoyed with side dishes. Both the porridge and side dishes are delicious and gentle on the stomach! They open from the morning, making it a great place for breakfast or lunch!

A rare Chinese porridge restaurant in Kyoto. In Hong Kong, it is common to eat porridge for breakfast, and following that tradition, this restaurant opens at 7 am. Chinese porridge for breakfast is gentle on the stomach and filling. It comes with three side dishes, all with strong flavors, so even a small amount is enough for variety. Additionally, you can enjoy further flavor variations with soy sauce, vinegar, and chili oil. In Kyoto, the breakfast culture is dominated by bread, so this is a great option for those who want to try something different for breakfast.

The rice porridge was delicious! There was more than I expected, and I ended up feeling full. The second floor was spacious but the stairs were steep, which might be tough for elderly people. There are seats on the first floor too, but they are narrow and not very calming. However, the taste was really good! The condiments added a nice touch!

I wanted to eat something gentle on my stomach, so I arrived at the restaurant a little after 8 am. There were 2-3 groups waiting ahead of me. Although I didn't have to wait long, it seemed like there were a lot of staff but only one person cooking, which made the process slow. I ordered the Chicken Congee Supreme, but I found the taste to be bland and there were very few condiments. Personally, I think the congee at "Minsei" in Kobe Chinatown is more delicious. The congee alone costs 1300 yen, so I don't think I will be returning. By the way, the person sitting next to me seemed to be a tourist from Taiwan, and I was curious about how someone from the original country would evaluate this place.

I came to the restaurant hoping to have the 500 yen morning set, but it was already sold out. It was disappointing... Although it was early, there were quite a few customers. There were seats on the second floor too, so it didn't feel crowded. The interior had a slightly foreign feel, making me feel like I was having breakfast overseas. I opted for the Chinese-style porridge, which was a generous portion and left me feeling full.

In May of the 5th year of Reiwa, on a Monday morning at 7 o'clock, I visited Kyoto in search of breakfast. I wandered around the city and found a specialty porridge shop. Upon arriving at 7 o'clock, there was already a line, indicating it's a popular place. I ordered the Deluxe Chinese Chicken Porridge "Goku" for 1,300 yen. It was delicious with rich chicken flavor, perfect for a hangover. The toppings included pickled mustard greens, lotus root chips, cashew nuts, egg, and chicken char siu. The side dishes were soy sauce-pickled garlic chives, simmered clams, and soy sauce-pickled shrimp. Each ingredient paired well with the porridge, making for an interesting combination. There were two types of chicken char siu, both delicious. By the time I left the restaurant, I was completely full and satisfied with my delightful Kyoto breakfast.

There were only three types of porridge sets available. I chose the five-grain rice porridge, and when I sprinkled the bonito flakes on top, it tasted delicious even without adding salt. The porridge was topped with simmered kelp, pickled plum, and trefoil, but the pickled plum was quite salty. There were mostly Japanese customers, but there were also some foreigners. The chicken porridge was tastier.

I went to the restaurant around 7 in the morning. I ordered tai congee and dashimaki. There was tai fish on one side of the congee. The broth of the congee was light and very delicious. It was also quite filling. There were three types of condiments. Each had a strong flavor and made the congee even tastier when added. It reminded me of the congee I had in Taiwan.

I used it for breakfast during my trip to Kyoto. I ordered Chinese chicken congee and five-grain rice porridge separately. The Chinese congee came with soy sauce-pickled leeks, salty pickled shirasu, and pickled clams. The Japanese porridge came with a variety of pickles and salt for seasoning. The salt for seasoning was a bit mild even when I added all of it, so I thought it would be nice if they provided extra salt on the table. My porridge was mistakenly taken to another customer at first, and even though I knew it hadn't been touched, it still made me feel a bit down... Thank you for the meal.

I was curious about the chicken porridge, but the size was too big so I went with the regular size. However, they also offer a small size. The porridge had a stronger flavor than I expected, and it was delicious. It was not too strong or too light, just the right amount of seasoning. The egg had a nice touch of star anise. They have various types of porridge and even daikon mochi, it's a great restaurant.

A few minutes walk from Kawaramachi Station in Kyoto. Today I had lunch here. The restaurant specializes in porridge, with four main options. I ordered the Chinese chicken porridge. Let's dig in! The porridge is moist and smooth, with a gentle salt-based seasoning. I started by eating it as is, then used the additional flavorings provided. In terms of cost performance, it's a bit on the lower side, but having porridge once in a while is nice. So, thank you for the meal! I knew before entering that there would be a high proportion of women, and indeed, on this day I was the only man. Also, because porridge doesn't fill you up for long, it's best to order a set or have a snack to last until dinner.

Taiwanese congee! There are various types available, and you can order a la carte. I ordered Chinese chicken congee and daikon cake. The congee was soothing for my overeaten stomach. It made me want to visit Taiwan. I deducted one star because I thought it was a bit pricey. There is also a restaurant called Breeze Tainan in Kyoto, which offers a clean and fast-food style congee. Breeze Tainan has a more authentic Taiwanese feel. Both are delicious. Thank you for the meal.

Enjoyable Toppings at Fushikouji Congee Shop (Congee Kawaramachi)
On a holiday morning, it's the perfect opportunity to visit a restaurant you don't usually go to. Whether it's a lunch place a bit far away or a course meal that takes time to prepare. Feeling a bit tired on this day, I decided to have something gentle on the body. I headed to Fushikouji Congee Shop. It's a restaurant managed by Kyoto's restaurant "Menami". I actually love congee so much that I make it myself at home. This is exciting. I ordered a simple Chinese congee and a roasted green tea latte and went up to the second floor. The bright interior gives off a cafe-like vibe. As I relaxed, the awaited congee arrived. Wow, so many toppings! Surprisingly luxurious, my excitement went up. Let's dig in. Ah, it's so comforting, incredibly delicious congee. Rich in chicken flavor, with a deep and rich taste. It warms my tired body. The rich and creamy yolk of the seasoned egg pairs perfectly. The crispy texture and fragrant taste of fried lotus root and fried bread also add a nice touch. Even though it's already delicious, there were additional toppings for flavor variation. I love this kind of bonus feeling. Clam tsukudani, scallion soy sauce pickles, and salted dried shrimp. They are small in quantity but with a strong seasoning, so they might be good for when you want a punch of flavor. (I tried them individually without mixing them in). After the meal, I felt cozy with a roasted green tea latte. If it were a sandwich or scone, a stronger royal milk tea would be a good match, but for a light congee, this was just right. It turned out to be a wonderful brunch. They also offer takeout, so my secret ambition is to wake up early and have a morning meal at work.

A bright and cute shop. The exterior is cute. You order the menu at the entrance, and there are many options to choose from, making it hard to decide. There are meat dishes and side dishes, and although the menu seems cheap at first glance, it can add up if you choose a lot. Once you order, you are seated. The staff brings the menu once it's ready. It's perfect for a tired stomach after overeating the day before. It's great that they are open from the morning. It would be nice if they offered pickled plums as a topping.

There seemed to be many Chinese customers. The staff were all Japanese, but the food was delicious. The service was quick, and you can choose from small, regular, and large portions, so anyone can be satisfied. I recommend it to everyone.

Visited in November 2022. Currently rated 3.35. There are 27 reviews. I took a high-speed night bus for the first time. Arrived at Kyoto Station before 6 am. Took a morning bath at Ume-yu, which was said to be empty from 6 am. Then walked here. Kyoto in the early morning is nice. Opens at 7 am. I've mentioned this before, but I wish Tabelog would add a morning section in addition to lunch and dinner. It's early in the morning, but it's quite crowded. The interior of the restaurant is bright and clean. I ordered the basic rice porridge. I had it on the second floor. The taste is not strong, but it has a good flavor and smell of chicken. It can be enjoyed with fragrant vegetables and pickles. It was a perfect breakfast.

I visited around 9:30 in the morning on a regular day. There was one group on the second floor when I arrived. Right after me, another group and one more person arrived. The Morning Set costs 550 yen and comes with shiitake mushroom tsukudani, dried baby sardines, and chives marinated in soy sauce. It was a bit too much and high in salt, but I wish there was a bit more of it. The side dish was a bit sour for my liking since I don't like acidity. The rice porridge met my expectations.

You can get a set of morning porridge for 500 yen with just one coin on weekdays. The taste is very delicious. It is perfect for when you have had too much to drink the night before, as it is gentle on the stomach. I recommend it. I thought it would be impossible to get in early because there were already people lining up, but surprisingly there is a second floor seating area, so they can accommodate a lot of customers.

The "Ramen 20 Match" has ended in 5 days in 2022. However, I plan to start a new series soon. "2022 New Store Exploration Record" #203: Opened on January 15th, "Tomikoji Congee Shop" (Kyoto, Kawaramachi). Despite the relatively high prices for congee, they offer a weekday morning set for 500 yen (excluding tax). This time, I tried the Chinese chicken congee.
