It was my first time visiting this restaurant, but it felt like coming back to a nostalgic home with a warm atmosphere. Located on Ryoanmachi Street, just off Karasuma Street, in a small traditional Kyoto townhouse that is easy to miss. I climbed a narrow and steep staircase to the second-floor tatami room. I visited around 8 pm, and the place seemed to have finished its first round since opening in the evening. Perhaps due to COVID-19 precautions, customers were leaving early. Even though it was a Friday night, one of the two tatami rooms on the second floor was empty, and I was seated there. The second-floor tatami room seemed to retain the atmosphere of a traditional Kyoto townhouse, even after being renovated for a restaurant. It felt more like saying "I'm home" rather than "excuse me" when entering. I came for a drink, so I ordered Fushimi, Kyoto sake, with sashimi of red snapper, tempura of shirako (fish milt), and oden (daikon radish, beef tendon, grilled tofu) as snacks. The red snapper sashimi was thick and just right, not too thin or too thick, with a great freshness and a nice balance of tenderness and firmness. The shirako tempura was crispy on the outside, with creamy shirako inside. It was piping hot when freshly fried, so be careful not to burn your mouth (laughs). As I savored the dishes, I took a sip of sake. It was truly a moment of happiness. The oden was also delicious, with the daikon radish being large and satisfying to eat, soaked through with broth, and soft. The beef tendon was melt-in-your-mouth tender. So delicious. So delicious. I felt so happy. The young man who served the second floor was fantastic, attentive and considerate. He didn't need to call out loudly "excuse me," but he made eye contact and noticed when guests raised their hands or made eye contact. The bill was settled by table, and while waiting, he brought out hojicha (roasted green tea). There was only one ice cube in it. I was a bit touched by this thoughtful gesture. It's not uncommon for restaurants to serve tea while waiting for the bill, but it's often boiling hot and impossible to drink before paying. By adding that one ice cube, the tea's temperature was just right and very enjoyable. It's great to have staff who can show such care and consideration. I will definitely visit again on my next trip to Kyoto. Thank you for the wonderful meal!
