I visited a izakaya in Kyoto city for a late night drink. It is usually crowded, but luckily there was an empty seat at that late hour. I ordered "eel drop", "Kamo eggplant with shrimp jelly", and "ayu tempura", along with appetizer, and two glasses of sake (130ml each). The total bill was a little over 5,000 yen. Kyoto's izakaya is truly unique. The cooking is meticulous and the presentation is beautiful. The taste is also excellent. The price is fair, but they know how to entertain you. The service is outstanding. Someone checks on the customers every few minutes. If you want to order more, you can easily get their attention. They also quickly clear empty plates. You don't have to loudly call for the staff, maintaining a great atmosphere in the restaurant. It's a great place to visit.

It had been a long time since I visited Ukon, but the manager remembered me after 3 years! The menu features seasonal seafood and delicious local chicken dishes. I recommend trying the assorted sashimi and chicken sashimi platters. They have a wide selection of Japanese sake, with about 20 different varieties from all over the country. They are open until 24:00, making it a great choice for an izakaya in the Horikawa Sanjo area.

A cozy Japanese izakaya in the neighborhood. While they have a regular menu, I always opt for the extensive daily specials menu on a separate sheet. The vegetables and seafood on the daily menu are accompanied by their place of origin, which adds credibility. With no wrong choices, I feel comfortable exploring different dishes. When dining alone, they even adjust portion sizes, which is a thoughtful gesture for those who enjoy variety. The subtle rabbit motifs and decorations throughout the restaurant add a charming touch. They also have a good selection of sake and shochu, making it a favorite spot for casual Japanese dining.

During a trip to Kyoto with my British friend, we were able to secure a reservation at a popular restaurant. Everything we tried was good, but the standout dishes were the corn tempura, sashimi, and Morika's tofu along with the fried tofu. The total bill for two people was 16,000 yen. It was nice that Morika's tofu could be enjoyed in various ways like cold tofu and thick fried tofu. The service provided by the owner and all the staff members was exceptional, which I found to be rare for a casual restaurant in Kyoto.

The manager is very friendly, and if this restaurant was near my house, I would definitely become a regular customer. The tempura and sashimi are delicious, so I highly recommend it!

The dishes are all very delicious and excellent. The restaurant is always crowded because it's popular, but the staff are all young, energetic, polite, and make you feel very comfortable. The selection of Japanese sake is particularly excellent. The cleanliness of the restroom is well-maintained, which is very pleasing for adult women.

Everything is delicious! The prices may be a bit higher compared to cheap izakayas, but it's worth it.

The theme of this regular meeting was sake. There are many places that offer delicious sake, and this time someone recommended this place, so I decided to visit. It's located about 150m south of Nijo Castle Station, heading west on Nishikojin. The sign reads "卯" (U). When I entered, the place was about 80% full of customers. I was glad I made a reservation. When you order a drink, you also get a small appetizer, handwritten and likely changes daily. They were small but carefully made, with ingredients like whitebait, mozuku seaweed, and yuba tofu, all delicious. The menu had a good selection of sake, as well as unique appetizers like sea cucumber, grilled ginkgo nuts, grilled edamame, and pickled vegetables. The sashimi platter with 5 types of fish was all delicious, especially the Spanish mackerel and cherry snapper. The simmered sea perch was outstanding. Since we had a group of 6, we were able to try a variety of their specialties. The staff were friendly and there were plenty of them due to the large number of customers. The place had a great selection of sake, delicious food, and a friendly atmosphere. A well-rounded restaurant. Thank you for the meal.

June 2016 Revisit
It's been a while since my last visit, but I decided to come back. This is my third time visiting, and the owner remembered me. I asked for recommendations and ordered a few dishes. I had the bonito sashimi, Kyoto wild boar with sauce, and small ayu tempura. I paired them with Matsunotsukasa and Jyokigen Kuhachi junmai sake (served in 130ml glasses). Everything was delicious as always. I realized once again that this is a great restaurant. When I asked, I found out that the chef used to work at an izakaya called "Ryoma." That explains the diverse menu and generous portions. I will definitely be back.
December 2013 First Visit
I was introduced to this restaurant "Uima" by the owner, whom I have a good relationship with. It's tucked away in a quiet alley just one street west of Horikawa-dori. If it weren't for the connection with the owner, I would have never discovered this place, as it didn't have any ratings on Tabelog at the time. Truly a chance encounter. The restaurant is run by a chef in his 30s, with many young staff members bustling around. The menu features dishes made with Kyoto Jidori chicken from Murata Farm, rare seafood like mantis shrimp, and seasonal seafood. The lineup of hot pot dishes, essential for this cold season, is also excellent. The lightly seared mackerel and rolled omelette with Kujo green onions were delicious. The assorted chicken sashimi was fresh, and the yellowtail collar was fatty and tasty. The atmosphere is that of an izakaya, but the food clearly sets it apart from your typical casual izakaya. You can feel the chef's dedication to sourcing quality ingredients, offering a wide range of dishes from seasonal items to perfect sake pairings. The sake selection leans towards lower acidity, which I personally enjoy. They also have a few hidden sake options, and I chose "Hououbita." Glasses are served in 130ml, and you can choose from tokkuri or ochoko. While it's a bit away from the city center, it's definitely worth a visit for this high-level izakaya experience. The fact that they are open until 1 am is also a nice touch.

I visited this restaurant for dinner after temple-hopping in Kyoto, as my companion had made a reservation. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very nice. We were seated at a sunken kotatsu table near the entrance. The kotatsu table was a welcome relief for our tired legs. We started with a toast with our drinks. In addition to regular draft beer, the restaurant also offered a half-and-half option, which was a nice touch. We ordered a sashimi platter with tuna, squid, and conger eel. The conger eel was the first of the year for us and it was delicious. We also ordered chicken from two different regions, which had a good texture and taste. We also had corn tempura, sea grapes, and salad. We enjoyed our drinks, including draft beer and sake. There was a wide variety of sake available. When we arrived at 5:30 pm, the restaurant was not very crowded, but it became busier as we left for the restroom. It seems to be a popular spot. I don't usually visit restaurants in this area, but this one was tucked away in a side street, giving us a taste of the Kyoto atmosphere. I am grateful to my companion for choosing such a great restaurant.

I found a delicious restaurant behind the Horikawa Oike Fire Department. The owner told me they have been in business for eight years. They serve a variety of fresh seafood and delicious chicken dishes. Every dish was so tasty that I wanted to try everything on the menu.
