When you come to Kyoto, you definitely want to try something Kyoto-like, right? That's the feeling I had when I visited the tofu kaiseki restaurant "Tosuiro Gion" near Yasaka Shrine, around Gion Shijo station. The restaurant is located in a renovated 150-year-old machiya house, exuding a nostalgic atmosphere. It feels like a detached building, doesn't it? Cheers with plum wine made from plum. It looks like wine, but it has a strong plum flavor.
- Appetizer: Chrysanthemum greens, pine flavor, tofu skin in soy milk, datemaki (Japanese omelette), black beans. A celebratory-looking appetizer assortment.
- Oboro-yudofu ★ Recommended by Isshi: Two types of tofu made from adzuki beans and green soybeans, boiled for different lengths of time. The tofu is served with spinach inside. You can enjoy the direct taste of tofu as the boiling time and arrangements are changed each time. It's so heartwarming and delicious. This is what Kyoto is all about, right? The Awaji Island salt served later enhances the sweetness of the tofu, so I recommend it.
- Sashimi: Tuna, Spanish mackerel, yuba (tofu skin) sashimi. The Spanish mackerel is seared on the skin side, allowing you to enjoy a change in texture and the sweetness of the fish.
- Side dishes: Tofu in miso sauce, yuba in miso soup, salmon sushi, grilled pumpkin, tofu with sea urchin, sweet potato, shimeji mushrooms, shishito peppers. Served with elegant dashi broth, grated daikon radish, and ginger.
- Ochazuke: The meal ends with a smooth ochazuke. Inside are Kyoto Akadaka chicken, yuzu, and more. The daikon radish, mizuna, and purple pickles are of such high quality that you'll want to buy them as souvenirs.
- Tofu sherbet: I usually prefer oily foods, so eating light Kyoto cuisine in such a nostalgic setting made me feel like an adult. The humorous talk by the owner also added a nice touch to the delicious meal.
