On a sunny holiday, I was taken to Kitano Tenmangu Shrine for a visit and then had lunch at the nearby restaurant "Niku to Niwa Matsuwo" ☺️ This area is known as Kyoto's oldest geisha district, "Kamishichiken," which flourished as the teahouse district along the east approach to Kitano Tenmangu Shrine and the inner sanctum of Nishijin, famous for its textiles ☺️
We walked down a narrow alley, with elegant lattice doors and traditional noren curtains swaying in the breeze. As we opened the sliding door, we were greeted by vibrant red and blue maple leaves adorning the walls, and folding fans with geisha names lined up, creating a charming atmosphere typical of the geisha district. The white wooden counter was neatly arranged, appealing to adult sensibilities ✨
Sitting at the counter, we toasted with beer, enjoying the refreshing sensation as the sweat on our necks quickly disappeared. The cold beer was so satisfying, it made our faces scrunch up in delight. We ordered the "Matsu" set, featuring a 160g Wagyu steak with extra meat, priced at ¥4504 (tax included). The lacquered lid reflected the blue sky, resembling a beautiful lapis lazuli jewelry box. Opening the lid revealed the luxurious steak on top, with beef tendon stew and Kyoto pickles elegantly arranged below. The white miso stewed beef tendon paired perfectly with the beer, its tender texture and subtle sweetness lingering on the palate, while the refreshing cucumber pickles provided a delightful crunch ✨
The main attraction, the steak, was generously laid out on the tray, cooked rare to showcase its glossy surface. Drizzling the homemade steak sauce over it, our appetites were instantly awakened. The garlic-infused sauce enhanced the flavor of the meat, and each bite was a delight. Before we knew it, we had polished off every last grain of rice in the box, savoring every morsel.
The dessert that came with the set was also intriguing. The combination of vanilla ice cream and "Nama Yatsuhashi," a traditional Kyoto sweet, was a delightful surprise. The aroma of cinnamon and the chewy texture of the sweet rice cake blended perfectly with the ice cream. When I asked the owner, I learned that they also make their own Nama Yatsuhashi using plenty of ingredients from Iizutsu Yatsuhashi Honpo. It was so delicious that I'm sure it would sell like hotcakes if they were to sell it on Sannenzaka ❤️
As we savored the lingering moments after the meal, the view of the garden through the melting edible flower ice in our glasses added a cool touch to our Kyoto experience. This restaurant is highly recommended for a leisurely lunch while exploring Kyoto on a holiday ☺️
