I visited a traditional Kyoto restaurant. I dropped by randomly, but all the dishes were of high quality and the nostalgic atmosphere of the restaurant made the experience very enjoyable. The vegetable dishes like white leeks, shishito peppers, and eggplant were particularly impressive. I definitely want to go back again.

I had been interested in this restaurant for a while since it has been featured in various magazines. So, I decided to visit it after leaving the Pontocho Beer Hall. The atmosphere is nice. Even the restroom, located in the back of a Kyoto townhouse, has a charming feel to it. The food is delicious. The mustard lotus root has a nice kick to it. I recommended it to the foreigner next to me, who casually enjoyed it despite its spiciness. Impressive. My only suggestion would be for the cost-performance to be a bit better. I understand that a lot of effort goes into the preparation, so I may be asking for too much, but oh well. Thank you for the meal.

In a traditional Japanese house, you can relax and enjoy Kyoto home-cooked dishes at a reasonable price at the long-established restaurant "Renkonya." The combination of delicious food and cozy atmosphere makes you want to try everything on the menu. You can leisurely enjoy the hand-cooked meals by the female owner either with friends in a tatami mat seating area or alone at the counter. This restaurant, founded in 1950, offers a taste of old Japan that is perfect for both locals and foreigners.

I called a friend in Kyoto and had dinner at a place I had been curious about for a while. We had dishes like simmered beef, spicy bell peppers, pike conger, sea bream roe, yuba, grilled eggplant, pork miso soup, and shredded dried bonito rice balls. Ordering various dishes in small plates was really fun! All the dishes were delicious and it was a very enjoyable restaurant experience.

In the bustling district of Kiyamachi Street, there is a retro-style izakaya (small Japanese pub) run by a female owner and 1-2 staff members. The atmosphere is great and would definitely appeal to foreign tourists. The menu mainly consists of small Japanese dishes, which are delicious but the portions are small. It's perfect for enjoying with some beer and sake. The only downside is that the beer was only available in bottles and slightly warm. Overall, it was satisfying but a bit lacking, so we ended up going to a ramen shop afterwards. If you can fully enjoy this place, you must be a true adult!笑笑

Located on Kiyamachi Street, this izakaya exudes a nostalgic Showa era atmosphere, selected as a Bib Gourmand restaurant. The establishment was founded in 1950, and it appears to be housed in a machiya townhouse from the Edo period. The menu mainly consists of obanzai dishes, a variety of Kyoto home-style dishes that pair well with alcohol. Choosing a drink can be a tough decision, starting with sake, such as the Fuji Chitose nigori sake from Kyoto's Matsui Sake Brewery, which is sweet and has a thick texture. The signature dish is the homemade karashi renkon, a spicy miso blend that has a sharp kick with a soft sweetness. Another popular dish is the Fushimi togarashi and jako simmered dish, featuring simple obanzai that is a must-try. The Biwa Lake specialty, moroko deep-fried, seasoned with salt or dashi soy sauce, is also a favorite. Next, try the Kyoto Takasebune Monogatari from Shiga's Ota Sake Brewery, a refreshing and clear local sake with a pleasant aroma and flavor. The simmered dish includes tender, plump liver with a rich taste that pairs perfectly with sake. The nishin-nasu, another Kyoto specialty dish, offers a flavorful experience as the herring absorbs the broth and the eggplant with ginger adds a delicious touch. Finish with a large onigiri served with chirimen sansho and a homemade pickled trio, all devoured with gusto. This cozy restaurant with a sunken kotatsu seating, counter, and table seats for ten guests is a must-visit spot. Enjoy delicious sake and home-cooked meals in a charming setting. Bon appétit!

Renkon-ya is a lotus root restaurant located in Sankocho. I've walked around Sankocho many times before, but I never noticed this place. A person from the printing shop recommended it to me, so I decided to check it out. It's actually a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant. I was able to walk in without a reservation and sit at the counter. The atmosphere was a bit intimidating at first, but the staff were not overly friendly, which was actually nice. They served spicy lotus root as a complimentary dish and even the chopstick rest was made of lotus root, which was cute. I ordered some warm sake and nibbled on some appetizers. The food was not elaborate, but it felt like a true Japanese bar experience, and I was not disappointed at all. The sake was delicious, and I even had seconds. I also tried the chilled tofu dish, which was served in a bowl of ice water. It was a unique way to eat tofu, and it tasted refreshing. Enjoying good food and drinks at a nice izakaya makes me love the city even more. I paid my bill as it started to get crowded, but I hope to come back and sit at the counter again someday.

In the "Michelin Guide Kyoto-Osaka," it seems that this restaurant is selected as a Bib Gourmand every year. However, the source of information is a certain travel book. Intrigued by the photos in the book, I made a reservation over the phone before visiting. The restaurant has a counter, table seats, and two small sunken tables for two people each. The capacity seems to be around 20 people. On the day of my visit, the restaurant was empty throughout, so I think I could have visited without a reservation. As for the food, the seasoning suited my family's Kanto taste. Although the portion size for the price was a bit modest, it was a good place to relax with a drink, with a nostalgic atmosphere. - Homemade Mustard Lotus Root (2 pieces) @ around 700 yen - Okara (soy pulp) @ 600 yen - Tororo (grated yam) with Tataki (pounded) @ 800 yen - Nishikigi (shaved bonito) @ 500 yen - Nappa (Kyoto watercress) with whale "koro" @ 800 yen - Onigiri (plum) @ 300 yen - Kyoto Chitose Junmai (180ml) @ 700 yen - Visited for dinner with my wife - Made a reservation over the phone and visited around 7:00 PM on a weekday - Seated at a small sunken table for two people - Enjoyed a Kyoto sake from Matsui Shuzo brewery - Used Nikon Z7II with NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S for photos. The restaurant was a bit dark, so more light would have been better.

Located between Shijo Ohashi and Sanjo Ohashi, facing Nishi Kiya-machi Street, this restaurant is housed in a small but distinctive Edo-period townhouse, giving it a unique appearance. The interior has counter seats, table seats, and tatami rooms, but it is cozy and has a calm atmosphere due to its limited seating. The presence of an okudosan statue next to the counter adds to the historical feel of the place. Starting off with a Kirin Classic Lager bottled beer, the restaurant also offers a good selection of sake, mainly from Kyoto breweries. The homemade karashi renkon (lotus root with mustard) is a specialty, with a milder spiciness compared to the original dish from Kumamoto. Other dishes like Kyoto-style simmered bamboo shoots, beef stew, grilled whole edamame, and a unique dish called "nishikiza" (shaved bonito with quail egg, wasabi, and nori) are all delicious and pair well with sake. The pounded yam with egg yolk and soy sauce, and the homemade rice balls with a choice of fillings (plum, dried fish with sansho pepper, or meat miso) are also recommended. The restaurant's simple yet flavorful dishes made with quality ingredients make it a place worth visiting again.

In the woodworker district where young people value cheapness over quality, this restaurant stands out. Every dish is carefully prepared. The retro atmosphere inside is equipped with Wi-Fi and accepts various electronic payments. The deep-fried moroko from Lake Biwa is excellent. The simmered dish with water shield and whale meat has whole dried sardines in it, giving it a rich flavor. The sea cucumber is delicious as expected. The homemade mustard renkon (lotus root) is crunchy and has a strong mustard flavor.

The restaurant had a nice atmosphere with tatami seating. Their homemade spicy lotus root was delicious, as well as the hot tofu with flavorful sauce and the crispy chili peppers. The thick fried tofu with grated radish was served in a large portion and tasted great with ginger. The prices were reasonable too.

It's a wonderful restaurant with a lovely landlady. The food is exceptionally delicious and the atmosphere of the restaurant is charming. Watching her work at the counter, you can tell she is very skilled. The cucumber vinegar was not just a simple appetizer, it was delicious. The mustard lotus root seemed to be made in the traditional way since the establishment, and it had just the right amount of spiciness and was delicious. Overall, all the dishes were delicious.

Located on Nishikiyamachi Street, this is a restaurant specializing in obanzai dishes. I visited for the second time, making a reservation for 20:00. The dishes we ordered were all delicious and reasonably priced. The beer was 800 yen, umeshu soda mix was 650 yen, and the dishes included crispy lotus root with mustard, kinpira (burdock, lotus root, carrot), mezasu (grilled fish), hotaruika (dried firefly squid), tonjiru (pork miso soup), onigiri with shredded mountain pepper, assorted pickles, and okara. The total bill for two people was 6050 yen. The owner, a strong and kind woman, cooks efficiently and all the dishes were exquisite with delicate flavors. I would definitely like to visit again.

I went on a business trip to Kyoto. I haven't been to Kyoto much, so I did some research and chose this place that seemed nice. It turned out to be a great choice. The restaurant is like a casual small eatery where you don't have to worry too much. It's more like a bar, but run by a female owner. The food is cozy Kyoto home cooking. The signature dish, karashi renkon, has a simple and delicious taste. The atmosphere of the restaurant makes you feel like you've really come to Kyoto. It's a great place to visit.

Located in Kiyamachi, there is a restaurant called "Renkon-ya" in a Kyoto townhouse that was built during the Edo period. The interior of the restaurant has aged well, with a quaint and charming atmosphere. There are two small raised tatami seating areas for four people each, as well as two small table seats and a counter with five seats. We ordered the following dishes: - Karashi Renkon (2 slices) - Ko-iwashi simmered in black pepper - Nishin (herring) with eggplant We also enjoyed the following drinks: - Small bottle of beer - Kamikura (unfiltered junmai sake) The total bill came to 3200 yen. The food was served promptly, and the specialty "Karashi Renkon" was freshly fried, with a satisfying crispy texture from the batter and lotus root. The spiciness of the mustard was not overpowering but rather mild and pleasant. The simmered iwashi and nishin with eggplant were perfect accompaniments to the sake. We then switched to Kyoto Matsui Shuzo's "Kamikura" sake, which was served slightly warm in a regular glass. It was a great experience to enjoy a drink with these delicious dishes. This is a great place for a small group to enjoy a hearty meal and drinks.

Renkonya is a long-established izakaya in Nishikiya-cho. You can enjoy obanzai dishes and sake in a nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of the early Showa period. Some favorite dishes include nishikigi, okara, me-zashi, mameaji sashimi, and torikimo. The famous karashi renkon may not be exceptional, but the simple yet cleverly prepared obanzai dishes all pair well with sake. It's a great place for 2-3 people to leisurely enjoy drinking.

Located in an area south of Sanjo Machi, on the west side of Takase River. The nearest station is Sanjo Station on the Keihan Line. With a small traditional Japanese storefront displaying the name "Renkonya," the interior of the restaurant exudes a nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of an old soba shop. In addition to counter and table seating, there are also tatami mat seating in the back. The menu features gentle Japanese dishes, including their signature mustard lotus root, beef simmered in soy sauce, nikujaga (meat and potato stew), Tanba black beans, and pickles - all perfect accompaniments to rice. Naturally, these dishes pair well with sake. The restaurant offers a variety of sake ranging from unfiltered nama-zake to ginjo-shu, allowing you to choose according to your preference. On this day, I enjoyed quite a few glasses of Matsumi Shuzo's Kyoto Sennen no Yuki Junmai Ginjo. With delicious Japanese dishes like those served here, pairing them with a refreshing and easy-to-drink sake, almost like rice itself, makes it easy to keep drinking.

I was touring around Kyoto during the day, and in the evening, I wanted to visit some izakayas in Kyoto. However, many places were closed, probably due to the holiday. The few places that were open were packed! After walking around for about 30 minutes, I finally found a place called Renkonya. The exterior had an old-fashioned charm, and inside, the landlady and female staff were very welcoming. I ordered the dish called Renkon, which was delicious. It had a nice kick of mustard too. I would love to come back here again for a leisurely drink!

During a business trip to Kyoto, I had a solo meal at a restaurant called Renkon which was recommended on the hotel map. I sat at the counter and enjoyed grilled eggplant, grilled shiitake mushrooms, grilled edamame, simmered beef, black pepper sardines, jumbo-sized thick fried tofu (which was the main dish!), and a rice ball with shredded dried fish and Japanese pepper. I was full after the meal, and the total including non-alcoholic drinks was 4150 yen. I was impressed by the owner who cooked all the dishes quickly by herself. Everything was simple but delicious.
