I usually buy Yūko-san, but this time I decided to try Nishio that caught my eye. I tend to choose two colors in situations like this (・∀・). Compared to Yūko-san, Nishio has a stronger cinnamon flavor and less sweetness. The matcha flavor is mostly in the color, and it's also quite spicy! This might be a love-it-or-hate-it situation. Yūko-san is definitely a very easy-to-eat hachihaki. Thank you for the meal♪

I love Yatsuhashi so much that now you can even buy it at department stores in Tokyo. However, I didn't realize there were so many varieties available. I usually go for the normal fresh Yatsuhashi without red bean paste, or the ones with red bean paste inside. There are so many options that it's hard to choose. This time, I saw chocolate flavor, so I decided to buy some for home and as souvenirs. When I tried them at home, the matcha flavor wasn't very strong, but it had a refreshing sweetness. The chocolate ones had red bean paste inside, which was interesting, but I was hoping for a stronger chocolate flavor. I bought them as souvenirs thinking they were unique, but they might not have been the best choice. I forgot to take a picture, but I also love the plain Yatsuhashi without red bean paste. Personally, I like to sandwich them with cream cheese. It makes a great snack. Give it a try!

For the last stop of my day trip to Kyoto, I bought some Yatsuhashi as souvenirs. I always end up buying them! This time, I got some for myself. I like the ones with just the skin more than the ones with filling. I bought Matcha An (250 yen) and a pack of two different flavors of fresh Yatsuhashi (250 yen each). They are so delicious and affordable, making it easy to buy.

Today is the day to return to Tokyo. I purchased a small box of Hattendo to enjoy on the Shinkansen. This time, I chose the black sesame flavor. While the classic choices are cinnamon or matcha, as a sesame lover, I opted for black sesame. The sesame flavor is very rich and pairs perfectly with the sweet bean paste. It was delicious and a perfect snack for the train ride.

West Oi Yatsuhashi / Anna Ma Baked Sweet Potato Natural Sweetness, Kyoto Baked Sweet Potato Paste Yatsuhashi with Sweet Potato Bits Inside ☑︎ 100g per serving 259 kcal ☑︎ 121g 324 kcal I planned to eat it frozen, but didn't have enough time, so I ate it ice cold. The skin was not hard at all, it was chewy! The chewy elasticity is good, although it doesn't have a good bite. The lack of bite is not at all bothersome. The fact that it doesn't contain wheat is also a high point. The baked sweet potato paste inside is stronger in sweet potato flavor than expected ◎ I ate it without any expectations, so I was happy to taste the sweet potato. It's a cheap snack with a common baked sweet potato flavor. The combination of sweet potato and paste is good, slightly sweet but the sweet potato does not lose to the paste and is assertive. When I repeat, I definitely want to eat it frozen. It was good to be able to purchase it since I couldn't go to Kyoto in the fall.

I'm in Kyoto. Let's buy some souvenirs. When it comes to Kyoto souvenirs, Yatsuhashi is a must. It's cheap and delicious. This time, I bought it at "Nishio Yatsuhashi" at JR Kyoto Isetan. The shop let me taste a lot of samples, which made me very happy. I purchased three items: chestnut, black sesame, and lemon. Each cost 232 yen (excluding tax). Chestnut is a seasonal limited edition, with a rich flavor. Lemon is refreshing and goes well with Yatsuhashi. Black sesame is full of sesame flavor and was my favorite! Thank you for the delicious treats. Fall 2018.

My family loves Senbei crackers, so I wandered around the basement floor of Isetan looking for souvenirs. Among the various companies, one that stood out was "Nishio" with their "Senbei crackers" in 9 different flavors, all priced at 250 yen each. They had "Senbei crackers (only the skin)", "Black sesame", "Chocolate banana", "Chocolate", "Baked sweet potato", "Orange", "Lemon", "Nikki", and "Matcha" flavors lined up from right to left. It was so much fun to choose, and I decided to buy them here. They come in small packages, so they can be easily finished quickly, which is great. Thank you for the meal! (^^)

After visiting the Kyoto Railway Museum, head over to Kyoto Tower! There is a combination ticket available for the museum and the tower, and currently elementary school students can enter for free. Enjoy the view of Kyoto from the tower, then stop by Nishio Yatsuhashi in the basement of Isetan for souvenirs. While Seigoin and Otabe are more well-known for their Yatsuhashi, Nishio Yatsuhashi is actually the oldest, established in 1689. The boxed Yatsuhashi with 10 pieces each are priced at 540 yen, making it a good option for giving out to friends and acquaintances. They offer a variety of flavors like cinnamon, matcha, and chocolate banana, as well as summer flavors like ramune, summer tangerine, and mango. I purchased the ramune and peach set on this day. The dough is soft and has a nice texture to it. The ramune flavor is distinct in the dough and pairs well with the white bean paste inside. When chilled, it has a refreshing taste perfect for summer. The peach flavor, however, may come off as a bit too sweet as the sweetness of the peach and white bean paste overlap. Despite the diverse range of flavors, there is enjoyment in finding your own favorite. They also offer a 5-piece pack for 250 yen, so you can try out different flavors.

When I went to Kyoto, I saw the popular souvenir Yatsuhashi in various flavors. Among them, "Black Sesame Yatsuhashi" can be found in 2-3 shops. This one has a bamboo charcoal-infused dough with black sesame bean paste. As a fan of black ingredients, I couldn't resist this snack. In other shops, they have sesame seeds in the bean paste, labeled as "Sesame Seed Bean Paste." And the best part is, I was able to buy 5 pieces for 250 yen, which was quite reasonable. When I looked at other shops, I realized that they add consumption tax on top of the price (lol). I ended up getting two different flavors for the same price as a box set.

Now, at JR Kyoto Isetan, there are Yatsuhashi, another traditional Kyoto sweet. It's nice, priced at 250 yen tax included, making it easy to buy casually. For personal consumption, it's a good price and quantity. Personally, I think the ones with sweet bean paste inside are tastier. There are also some that only sell the skin. Matcha flavor is also available for 251 yen tax included. Thank you for the meal! August 2015. Nankaihawks1's gourmet guide. Nankaihawks1's blog.

When I went to Kyoto, I felt like I had to try Yatsuhashi at least once, so I bought the ones from Nishio that are sold in souvenir shops all over. There are many varieties available, but I feel like the quality can vary a lot. During my favorite fruit, peach season, I couldn't resist buying peach-flavored Yatsuhashi. It's made with white bean paste and has a peach scent and flavor. However, the taste feels a bit flat. Generally, fruit-flavored bean paste tends to dilute the charm of the fruit's flavor.

I purchased these additive-free Yatsuhashi at Kyoto Station. Compared to other manufacturers that use trehalose and synthetic coloring, this one stood out. It has a nice chewy texture and the matcha and sesame flavors were quite good. I plan to buy from this manufacturer again next time. Thank you for the delicious treat!

There used to be three Yatsuhashi shops in Isetan, but now there are only two. One shop, which I overlooked, is known for its original hard Yatsuhashi. Legend has it that the name "Yatsuhashi" comes from a story where a single mother, in her longing for her mother, crossed a river with her two young children to visit her workplace. Unfortunately, the children drowned, causing the mother to have a shock and dream of becoming a nun. She offered timber as a donation, and was told to build a bridge with 8 planks, hence the name "Yatsuhashi" meaning eight planks. This shop offers a wide variety of flavors and is famous for its fresh Yatsuhashi, which you can sample all types of. I tried the seasonal Ramune and white peach flavors, but decided to pass on them. The rich matcha flavor looked tempting, but due to its high price and limited availability, I opted for the classic Nikki and regular matcha flavors. The signature triangular fresh Yatsuhashi here is called "annama." The annama assortment pack includes two mini packs of two different flavors for 1080 yen. The regular one is called "shioman," priced at 720 yen. The skin of the fresh Yatsuhashi is thick and chewy, giving a mochi-like texture. The Nikki has a fragrant aroma, and the Yatsuhashi with red bean filling is softer compared to the regular one.

When I come to Kyoto, it has become a habit for me to buy my own Yatsuhashi. I was impressed before when I bought Kotabe, as it was small but delicious, and the amount and price (350 yen) were reasonable. This time, I tried this one. The price is even cheaper at 250 yen. As a result, the packaging is simple. There were seasonal flavors like mango, ramune, and green apple. When I couldn't decide, they let me try some samples. I bought mango for mango lovers, and the classic black sesame. However, the mango and ramune flavors tasted a bit artificial, and the black sesame didn't have a strong sesame flavor. In terms of taste, I still prefer Kotabe. But they have unique variations here, so it might be good for trying something different.

I received Yatsuhashi as a souvenir from a friend, and at first I was a bit hesitant because I had a fixed idea that Yatsuhashi equals Nikki. But when I tried it, I thought "Oh, this is surprisingly good!" It has a nice chocolate banana flavor and aroma. I later found out that there are a total of 20 different flavors available. Some of the flavors include green tea, white sesame, black sesame, plum, red bean paste, mandarin orange, peach, strawberry, cherry blossom, ramune, chocolate banana, chocolate, baked sweet potato, chestnut, green apple, blueberry, mango, summer mandarin orange, salted seaweed, and strong matcha. But I'm not sure about ramune or green apple flavors.

When it comes to Kyoto, I was torn between which shop to choose for Yatsuhashi, but ended up purchasing from this shop. I got a set of seasonal cherry blossom and matcha Yatsuhashi for 420 yen. Despite the price, the portion was generous and I felt like I got a good deal. The taste was okay. The ingredients were solid, the dough was moist and soft, and the cherry blossom looked beautiful and added a seasonal touch. However, personally, I still prefer the traditional Yatsuhashi. I learned more about Yatsuhashi from the shop staff, and was surprised to find out that they had even participated in the Paris World Expo. I think everyone's preferences differ when it comes to shops, but unfortunately, I didn't feel a significant difference in taste. I believe it's best to find a shop that serves Yatsuhashi to your liking and enjoy it that way.

Among the many Yatsuhashi shops in Kyoto, the "Honke Nishio" stands out for its wide variety. It is the oldest Yatsuhashi shop, even older than Seigoin Yatsuhashi which was founded in the same year. Whenever I visit Kyoto, I always buy Yatsuhashi, but I have never bought from Nishio before. This time, I decided to try the "Ramune flavor" which is quite rare. The scent of Ramune was decent, but the taste was a bit subtle. As for the Yatsuhashi itself, my honest impression is that it was a bit powdery.

I had the opportunity to visit Kyoto, so I decided to compare and try different types of yatsuhashi (traditional Japanese sweet) such as Seigoin Yatsuhashi, Izutsu Yatsuhashi, and Nishio Yatsuhashi. I purchased them at the Nishio Yatsuhashi store in Kyoto Isetan. Kyoto Isetan also has stores selling Seigoin Yatsuhashi and Izutsu Yatsuhashi, making it convenient to buy various types of yatsuhashi as souvenirs. The yatsuhashi sold at the Nishio Yatsuhashi store had a similar variety to those sold at Izutsu Yatsuhashi and Seigoin Yatsuhashi stores, with little difference in types. After trying all three, I personally couldn't distinguish a clear difference in taste. Just like with other yatsuhashi, the Nishio Yatsuhashi also had a taste that truly represents yatsuhashi, making it a matter of personal preference on which one to purchase.
