forever friends
After leaving Matsuo-san, we continued walking towards Demachiyanagi. As we looked at the town and confirmed with my husband, "Oh, this is near Nakamuraya, right?" he asked if I wanted to buy something. I answered, "Yes! I want to buy something." I had seen an article in a magazine introducing a new product released here. The new product is sweet and savory simmered small pieces of fried tofu packed in a bottle. I was drawn to it because I had previously enjoyed the Sukeroku sushi here, which was very delicious, and the new product with fried tofu looked very appealing, with a cute label on the bottle. I hadn't made a reservation, but I decided to visit anyway with the mindset that if I couldn't buy it, it was okay. When I opened the door, the owner came out from the back. I asked if I could get the bottled fried tofu without a reservation, and he said, "Yes, how many would you like?" I was relieved that I could buy them! I got two bottles. He mentioned that if they have stock, they can provide it without a reservation, but due to the various magazines featuring the product, many people buy in bulk, so it's better to call ahead. He also explained the recommended way to enjoy the bottled fried tofu. Of course, it's delicious on top of freshly cooked rice, but the most popular way is as a topping for warm udon noodles in hot broth. The owner was very kind and gave me some tips. I took a photo of the impressive helmet displayed, which he said was more valuable than the white horse next to it. Back home, I immediately tried the fried tofu on freshly cooked rice, and the rich, sweet, and savory flavor stimulated my appetite. My daughter exclaimed, "It's sweet and salty and delicious!" She enjoyed it. Since the flavor is strong, it would probably taste great paired with slightly tangy sushi rice. I didn't try it on udon yet, but I will soon. It also has a good shelf life, so it seems like a nice souvenir. The Sukeroku sushi was also delicious, so I plan to make a reservation and visit again when I'm in the area. Thank you for the meal!
