While driving in Kyoto, my mother found a nice looking shop and told me to wait. Despite having had times when she couldn't move her legs, my mother's footwork was surprisingly light. She was initially worried if the dimly lit shop was open, but she opened the door without hesitation and went in. The staff were also kind, she said. They tried the bracken rice cakes and layered rice cakes. The bracken rice cakes were like traditional ones, and both were really delicious. However, the layered rice cakes were especially delicious, so much so that she exclaimed, "What is this?" They were fluffy and chewy, with beans adding an accent, and they came with kinako (soybean flour) and black syrup. They were tasty even without the toppings, but adding them made it even more delicious. It was a delicious rice cake that she would like to eat again.

The shop is located on the east side of the main street in front of Kyoto University. I received this snack from someone who is hooked on it. Each bag is small, but inside there were three pieces. The snack seems like it could crumble easily, and it's mostly red bean paste, I think. The sweetness is just right and it's delicious. I didn't know about it before, but now I want to eat it again. Maybe I should go visit the shop.

Japanese sweets have become popular regardless of age recently. In the past, they had a noble and somewhat high-class image, but now they are more accessible. If you want a certain Japanese sweet, you can easily get it. "Tokiwagi" offers a refined coarse sweet bean paste with reduced sweetness. It is thinly stretched out with meticulous craftsmanship, resulting in a rich flavor.

I purchased a "tokiwa-ki" at the special shop at the Kyoto National Museum's special exhibition on the tea ceremony. It came with a commemorative label on the package. It's probably the kind of snack I wouldn't have tried if not for this opportunity. It seemed to be a simple treat made by spreading sweet red bean paste and baking it, but it had a refined sweetness. I also bought some Marukyu Koyamaen matcha at the exhibition, and enjoyed a tea time with them. I'm not someone who is familiar with tea ceremonies, but sometimes, having a tea break like this is nice.

Located southeast of Demachiyanagi Station in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto, this is a traditional Japanese confectionery shop. Today's snack: Kasane Mochi, 6 pieces for 756 yen. The mochi was soft and fluffy with Tanba Dainagon red beans inside. It was delicious on its own, but even better with black honey and roasted soybean flour on top. Thank you for the treat! ❤️

I visited the Kyoto University Museum, but it was closed on Sundays. I was really curious, so I visited again the next day on my way back from Kurama Temple. I only had 1000 yen in cash, so I bought the smallest box of Tokiwa-ki and Masusato with 3 pieces each because they didn't accept payment in cash for individual items. I was also interested in Kasane-mochi, but I didn't buy it because I was already at the checkout. When I tried them back at the hotel, they were quite delicious. I wanted to buy them as souvenirs for my mother and sister, so I looked around at Isetan and Cube, but they only had a box of 6 Tokiwa-ki, so I thought it would be okay. Finally, I found Kasane-mochi at Kintetsu Miyakomichi Hervis Kyoto Meibutsu, where I could use my card, so I bought Tokiwa-ki and Kasane-mochi. When I got home, I tried the Kasane-mochi. It was really delicious, similar to Chimoto's Yumochi. There are small pieces of yokan inside, but here it's made with azuki beans. When eaten as is, it's a bit too soft and not very appealing, but when you sprinkle kinako and black honey on it, it becomes amazingly delicious. Each box contains 3 small pieces, and they disappeared in no time. I highly recommend this. Next time, I will bring more cash and buy a lot of Kasane-mochi.

I purchased this at Kyoto Station. It was the last one, so I got it! The box said there were 16 pieces, so I was surprised when I opened it. Wait, are you yokan!? I thought it was some kind of warabi mochi because it had black honey and kinako on it. The instructions said to sprinkle kinako on each piece. However, the texture was sticky from the beginning, so it was hard to separate each piece. The taste was somewhat similar to kuzumochi. But now that I think about it, it might be yokan after all. It's the type of sweet you eat when you're tired and craving something sweet. I mistakenly thought it was warabi mochi, so I accidentally opened the bag on the Shinkansen and felt lost without a plate or chopsticks to eat it with. Oh well. I won't let these troubles affect my rating.

I received a gift of "Tokiwagi" here. It came in a large box with individually wrapped Japanese sweets. The texture of the red beans is retained, and the sweet bean paste is packed tightly. It goes well with both Japanese tea and coffee.

I always thought the shop was dark and closed, so I usually passed by. But when I looked closely, I noticed light leaking from the back, and even further, I saw a sign that said "Cherry Blossom Mochi, Yomogi Mochi," so I decided to go in. The shop was quite spacious, and it seemed like the traditional Japanese sweets were displayed in a workshop connected to the back of the shop. When I placed my order, they went to the back to pack it and brought it back to me. I had to wait quite a while for the person to come back from the back, so maybe they make the sweets after receiving the order? - Yomogi Mochi It's not as chewy as a rice cake, but more like a soft mochi similar to daifuku. Despite its dark color, it had a light yomogi flavor, closer to yomogi powder than fresh yomogi. The red bean paste inside was generous but not too sweet, and it was soft and delicious. - Cherry Blossom Mochi When you hear cherry blossom mochi, you might imagine a pink color, but this one was white. The red bean paste inside was different from the yomogi mochi, a mixture of white bean paste and coarse red bean paste in a light brown color. The grains of the mochi were fine, more like a rough texture than a grainy one. These two seemed like seasonal sweets, but they also had other unfamiliar seasonal and regular items like "Manabi Mochi," "Tokiwagi," and "Kourou." I would like to try them if I have the chance again.

The underground area of JR Kyoto Isetan, which is already gaining attention as a new spot where you can find station-connected and limited edition souvenirs. This time, we introduce the "Kasanemochi" from Kagiyamasaaki at Hyakumanben, a spot for Japanese and Western sweets. Inside the box, there are two parts - one with kinako (toasted soybean flour) and black syrup. Inside are three pieces of Haneju mochi, topped with kinako and black syrup. The taste is as delicious as it looks. The texture of the Haneju mochi is soft and nice. With three pieces of mochi, you can enjoy topping them with kinako and black syrup as you like. I would like to try other sweets as well.

Located a 7-8 minute walk east from Demachiyanagi Station on the Keihan Main Line, this long-established Japanese confectionery shop is southwest of the Hyakumanben intersection. Visited during a stroll in Kyoto, as per my partner's request. The Tokiwa-ki sweets have a subtle sweetness, offering an elegant taste. A moist and soft three-layered baked confectionery that embodies the delicate nature of Kyoto sweets.

This snack, containing cold plum powder, has a texture similar to sugar-coated beans when you put it in your mouth. It has a hint of almond fragrance, a crispy texture, and is less sweet than similar snacks. Shaped like a wild chrysanthemum, it has a traditional Japanese feel, but the flavor is somewhat Western, creating a sense of unease and tension that keeps you on edge. You may not understand its appeal after eating one or two, but as you continue, it becomes addictive. This shop knows how to throw a curveball like Kagiya.

I opened the souvenir and found out it was warabi mochi, not what I expected at all! I tried it without any toppings first, reluctantly. What is this texture? It's completely different from traditional warabi mochi. It has a soft and chewy texture, like a mix of warabi mochi and daifuku. When eaten with black honey and soybean flour, it tastes like traditional warabi mochi but with a twist. This would be liked by both kids and elderly people. It's truly a Kyoto-style treat. It was delicious, thank you for the meal. But now I feel like trying some Adzuki bean paste mochi too, it's been a while!笑

Key shop. Tokiwagi. The simple red bean paste is delicious. It's like a thick, chilled nama-yatsuhashi sprinkled with kinako? When chilled, the sweetness becomes just right and it's delicious.

I purchased a Tokiwa tree at JR Kyoto Isetan. Inside the individual packaging were 3 bite-sized anko-filled cakes. I love anko-filled cakes and these were the perfect size for easy eating. My favorite was the one by Kagiya Masaki. It was delicious! Thank you for the meal.

A triangle-shaped snack sprinkled with soybean flour, "kibaku" (kanji unavailable) is recommended. It has a subtle sweetness that makes it easy to overeat. It's a hidden gem when looking for delicious souvenirs that are a bit off the beaten path!
