I had always been told by an acquaintance from Kyoto that I absolutely must try the "Lemon Pie" at Inoda Coffee, so I had been wanting to try it someday. On the final day of my "Kyoto Railway-related Trip", before boarding the Shinkansen, I decided to stop by here. It was around 12:50 on a weekday. The shop is located on the first floor of the shopping mall "ASTY Kyoto", directly connected to Kyoto Station's Hachijo-guchi (South Exit). It is at the western end of the restaurant area "Kyoto Omotenashi Koji" (refer to the photo). To the left of the entrance (east side), there was a counter selling coffee and cakes. The interior of the shop had a sophisticated and elegant atmosphere. There were about 20 tables for 2 to 4 people each. When I visited, it was full, so I waited for about 8 minutes in front of the shop (a few chairs were placed there). The other customers included families, middle-aged couples, young couples, young women in pairs, solo male and female customers, and there were also foreign customers. The menu was quite extensive, with coffee, soft drinks, sandwiches, toasts, spaghetti, other Western dishes, sets, cakes, and other desserts. The prices were on the higher side. My companion and I both ordered the "Cake Set 1,180 yen (tax included)" for two people. There were four types of cakes (Cheesecake, Apple Pie, Rum Raisin, Lemon Pie), but of course, both of us chose the "Lemon Pie". For the set drink, there were 10 options (Hot Coffee, Iced Coffee, Hot Cafe au Lait, Iced Cafe au Lait, Hot Tea, Iced Tea, Coca-Cola, Melon Soda, Orange Juice, Apple Juice), and both of us chose "Iced Coffee". When asked, "Would you like cream?", we replied, "Black, please". It was brought to us in less than 5 minutes. The "Lemon Pie" was quite large. From the bottom, it had pie crust, lemon cream, sponge cake with syrup, and plenty of meringue stacked on top. The meringue had a thin, even brown color on the surface. The lemon cream had a soft, slightly bouncy texture, with a mild lemon flavor and a smooth acidity. The meringue had a crispy texture and was very lightly flavored. There was no eggy smell. The contrast in textures between the pie crust, cream, sponge cake, and meringue, along with the matching flavors, was exquisite. It was much more refined than I had expected. I really liked it. The "Iced Coffee" had a refreshing taste with a moderate bitterness, which paired well with the "Lemon Pie". I was very satisfied to finally try the "Lemon Pie". I would love to eat it again when I visit Kyoto next time.
