At night, it operates as a bar, and during the day, it runs as a cafe! A cozy retro shop in Kyoto with the best ambiance! Located near Motonakano Station in Kyoto, about a 5-minute walk away, is the hidden gem called "BAR Tantei." I had been curious about this place after seeing photos on Instagram, and when I happened to pass by on my bike, I mustered up the courage to enter. The exterior is covered with lush trees, making the sign extremely hard to find! Without my friend pointing it out, I would have easily missed it. Once you open the door, you are greeted with a super retro and cozy atmosphere! The warmth of the wood makes it very calming. This place operates as "BAR Tantei" at night but as "Kissaten Tantei" during the day. In the daytime, it's bright with natural light coming in. There are about 8 seats at the counter, a large table near the entrance that can accommodate around 6 people, and a table for 4 towards the back. According to their website, this place used to be a traditional coffee shop called "Junkissa Sancha." After being unused for a while, it was renovated by film director Lin Haimu in 2008. Over the years, it has been passed down to various owners and took its current form in January 2018. The items placed around the shop are stylish and fitting for this space. There is a secret hidden in the bookshelf at the back, which the owner asked to keep secret, but it's really cool! If you're curious, I recommend visiting the shop and checking it out yourself. The playful detective-like atmosphere is so fun! The drinks menu includes coffee, tea, matcha-based drinks, and seasonal homemade syrups. I tried the Seasonal Blend Coffee (400 yen), and it felt like I was taking a break and becoming a detective for a moment, haha. The food menu offers sandwiches and other quick bites that detectives might enjoy during their break (totally my assumption). After my meal, I ordered dessert! The Strawberry Glass Shortcake was beautifully presented in a glass with strawberries and sponge cake. The sponge was fluffy, the cream was rich, and the strawberries added a nice sweet and sour touch. It was delicious and cute! The other desserts looked equally adorable and tasty. The female owner's service was exceptionally kind and welcoming! The regulars at the counter were engaging in lively conversations, and even as a first-time visitor, I was warmly welcomed and had a great chat. The cozy coffee shop atmosphere, delicious coffee, and sweets were all excellent, but the friendly staff's warm personality is what makes this place special. Although I can't visit frequently due to the location, I definitely want to stop by again when I'm in the area!
