Kyoto is a bakery located in Kitashirakawa. The atmosphere is like a local bakery, and the cheerful staff provide great customer service. Despite the small shop, the variety of bread displayed mostly have "reserved" signs. Surprisingly, the prices are very reasonable even during this period of price hikes. This place is for takeout only. I purchased the following items from the limited selection of bread left:
1. British Bread (1 piece) - 310 yen
The crumb is very fine, and when reheated, the crust becomes crispy.
2. Spicy Cheese Bread - 160 yen
It has a vibrant mustard yellow cheese filling. The filling was fluffy and delicious.

In the evening of a late December day in 2022, I walked to Naka Higashi Ma in Kyoto for a 3-night, 4-day trip. On the way, I passed by a bakery and decided to buy some bread for tomorrow morning. I got four pieces for 660 yen: beef curry, spicy cheese, red bean butter cream, and cheese pie. The bread was fluffy and nostalgic. The beef curry was surprisingly spicy, and I enjoyed the non-fried curry bread. It was a delicious meal.

I walked around the area near Kitaoji River, but it was too hot, so even though it wasn't noon yet, I decided to head back to Shiga. By chance, I happened to be in front of a bakery, so I decided to stop by and have some bread before heading back. The bakery is called Bakari Shirakawa, a long-established bakery founded in 1928. Kyoto has many shops labeled as "long-established," but the criteria may not be as strict as people think. There is also a famous bakery near my home in Aomori that is known for its butter cream bread (even Sandwich Man visited once), and I used to eat it as a snack when I was a child, so I love butter cream bread. However, the cream bread here had surprisingly little butter cream (perhaps due to rising ingredient costs) and felt a bit sticky. The bread was also on the smaller side, and I wish the dough was a bit softer. I may have had an overly fluffy and soft bread dough with a sweet, creamy image in mind. On my way back from Kitaoji River, I passed through the Mt. Hiei entrance and entered Otsu City, but there was a traffic jam. Then, heavy rain and thunder followed, making the traffic jam even worse. Hmm.

A traditional bakery with an elderly couple resting in the back. The coppe bread was surprisingly huge. The small an-donuts tasted different but reminded me of the donut skewers from Roba's Bakery. The hamburger sandwich was soft and had a delicious taste that never gets old. It's very affordable and I think it's student-friendly.

Today, I visited a long-established bakery in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto City. Bakery Shirakawa was founded in 1928, and when I arrived in the afternoon, most of the bread was already sold out, with only a corner displaying a collection of remaining bread. Additionally, there was a large amount of sold-out toast bread with tags indicating so. It seems that toast bread is quite popular here. This time, I purchased some sweet bread to take home.
- Jam Bread: A simple shaped bread with solid jam inside, reminiscent of school lunches and exuding a nostalgic charm.
- Cream Bread: A mountain-shaped cream bread with a generous filling of cream, also giving off a retro vibe.
- Raisin Bread: A bread rolled up with raisins inside, showcasing a rustic charm.
These kinds of bakeries from the Showa era are truly precious and I hope they continue to thrive for future generations.

Recently, on my way to "Nakahigashi" bakery, I almost always stop by this bakery. This time, I decided to try a bread that I've been curious about for a while. The popular item at this shop is called "Honey Butter," but there is also a similar item called "Butter Cream." When I asked the owner's wife's grandmother, she said that "Honey Butter" is popular, but some people also like "Butter Cream"... and preferences vary. So, this time, I decided to challenge myself with "Butter Cream" as well! Personally, I like both "Honey Butter" and "Butter Cream." They are both delicious. My wife prefers "Honey Butter."

I heard from an acquaintance at Kyoto University that the cakes here are cheap and delicious (actually came here for the cakes). The atmosphere is filled with a retro vibe. It was close to 12 o'clock on this day. There were still plenty of bread and steamed cakes available. Two croquette sandwiches were placed on the reserved shelf. ⚫︎ Beef Curry (150 yen) Spicy curry roux sandwiched between soft bread. The bread is very ordinary. ⚫︎ Chocolate Cake (170 yen) Chocolate-flavored steamed pancake cake with chocolate chips scattered throughout. It has a gentle sweetness and is perfect for a little snack. The bread and steamed pancake have a nostalgic and simple taste that makes you feel like you've eaten them somewhere before. The toast is apparently famous, so if I come back, I'll aim for the toast next time.

I bought cakes from the long-established bakery Shirakawa, and then purchased breads from Obo-ro-pan (120 yen), Tsu-buanpan (140 yen), and a 2-pound My Bread loaf (540 yen). The bakery is famous for its delicious bread, with most items already reserved. Luckily, I was able to purchase one loaf of their bread, which was delicious all the way to the crust. There must be a reason why this bakery has been loved for so many years!

Visited Kyoto and stopped by Mr. Shirakawa, who is ranked number one in a certain shokupan (Japanese bread) ranking. I purchased the one with extra butter and honey for 290 yen, which is slightly more expensive than the regular one priced at 270 yen. While it may not be a high-end shokupan, considering the price, I believe it offers good value for money. ⤴️⤴️

Photo: The nostalgic atmosphere of "Bakery Shirakawa," with a scent of Showa era, can be felt inside the store as you look at the map of Yuzu Adzuki. They sell simple special bread (pictured), as well as melon bread, cream bread, and anpan, all at affordable prices even for children. The most popular items are the shokupan (Japanese white bread) and coppepan. Butter cream and honey butter are also highly recommended.

This time, I had a special bread made with 5 slices of thick-cut white bread. It had a crispy crust on the outside and a soft, moist inside, making it an ideal bread. It was delicious.

A Showa retro bakery near Kyoto University sells cream puffs, jam bread, etc. at a low price, 4 for ¥500. Next time, I'll try buying some bread too.

Special bread. The quality of this bread for 290 yen is amazing. However, I prefer it when it's toasted. When eaten as is, it falls short compared to bread specialty stores. The crust of the bread is quite firm and has a salty flavor. They also offer high-quality items like gateau chocolat and maple cake. If I'm nearby, I might stop by this bakery.

When seeking delicious shokupan, make a reservation. Bring your favorite jam or butter with a bread knife and butter knife. Once you buy it, eat it soon. Freshly made is truly delicious. The chewy texture is irresistible. And when you get home, try toasting it. The crispy crust is also delicious. Reviews are reliable. Hidden gems are hard to find, but worth it. Popular places require reservations. Check in advance for no disappointments. Thank you to the master for always taking care of us. Once again, the shokupan was to my liking. Thank you very much! 🎵
