Today, I went to "Modan Yaki Fuji" in Demachiyanagi for some okonomiyaki. It's been a while since I've been here. It's a 5-minute walk from Demachiyanagi Station. I went for a solo lunch on a weekday, and the place was almost full. The restaurant has three floors, but due to COVID-19, they are only operating on the first floor. When you come here, you'll be overwhelmed by the menu board filled with over 100 different types of okonomiyaki, including unique options like "Hamburg Stew Modern," "Tropical Fruit Modern," and "Natto Rice Modern." The owner is a kind elderly man who apologizes for taking a bit of time to make the okonomiyaki. I chose the special Modan Yaki named after the restaurant. It had crab salad, corn, and grilled meat on top, each occupying one-third of the okonomiyaki. The crab salad was refreshing with crunchy cucumber, the corn stir-fry was plentiful, and the sweet and savory sauce on the grilled meat was delicious. The okonomiyaki itself was thin but dense, with a strong presence of batter compared to cabbage. It also had plenty of yakisoba inside, providing a satisfying meal. One piece was enough to fill me up pretty well. I'd like to come back with a group next time and try more varieties. I hope this restaurant continues to thrive for a long time.

Arrived after 1:10 pm on a holiday. Managed to sit right away as there was a seat available at the end of the restaurant due to customers leaving. It had been three years since my last visit due to the pandemic, and I found out that the second floor was not in use anymore. I recalled the fun times I had with friends during my student days at this place. Although I thought about having the pineapple that I used to enjoy, I decided to go for the oysters since it was the season. Other customers were ordering dishes like hamburger cheese fondue and cheese modern, each choosing different items from the menu. I personally like fruit-based dishes and with the wide variety available, I never get tired of them. There are some menu items that seem a bit intimidating, so I recommend finding a modern-yaki dish that suits your taste. I hope the restaurant continues to thrive and I plan to come back to try the dishes I haven't had yet while the owner is still around. Thank you for the delicious meal.

There are over 100 types of modern yaki dishes at this unusual restaurant. Each dish has a crazy amount of volume, especially the hamburger tartare modern yaki which has a 200-gram hamburger on top. It's so big that one person might not be able to finish it. The chef is friendly and approachable, and if you can't finish your meal, he will pack it up for you in a container.

I will eat Modern Yaki at Hyakumanben and head home. It's a very unique menu. The Cheese Fondue Modern Yaki here is exquisite, so please try it at least once. When I visited with a monk (yes, Kyoto is a city where monks eat Modern Yaki), they even specially made a monk's special vegetarian Modern Yaki (without meat, without garlic).

Visited Modern Yaki Fuji in Demachiyanagi, Kyoto on June 24th and had their simple yet delicious modern yaki. The fluffy dough paired with well-seasoned noodles and thin layers of egg was perfectly balanced. A shop that seems to be located in a student town. You can enjoy a hearty portion of okonomiyaki and modern-yaki cooked by the famous master. The walls are covered with various menu names, making it hard to decide what to order. You can watch the master cook right in front of you while you wait. The master seems to be quite talkative and entertaining. The taste is above average, and it's great that you can leave feeling full after eating here.

The cozy little restaurant featured in the manga "Karasu no Itoshi Kyoto Meshi" is described as having a counter and two tables on the first floor, and traditional tatami seating on the second and third floors. The extensive menu is categorized by meat, vegetables, seafood, cheese, curry, stew, pizza, Italian dishes, chili, mushrooms, tartare, rice dishes, cheese fondue, garlic dishes, fruits, and kimchi. The reviewer ordered the "Fuji Tamago" (egg dish with Worcestershire sauce, shichimi, and chopped green onions) and the "Hamburg Tartare Modern" (a hearty dish with cabbage, yakisoba, egg, 250g hamburger, and tartare sauce). The food was enjoyed with beer and the warm atmosphere created by the friendly owner made the dining experience even more delightful.

The restaurant has an old-fashioned teppanyaki atmosphere, and the owner's demeanor is pleasant. The extensive menu is a plus. I ordered the Garlic Cheese Modern and the regular Modern teppanyaki. The sign inside the restaurant warned of long wait times, which turned out to be true. However, the owner's friendly nature made the wait bearable. The food had a traditional taste, but I couldn't understand why it was highly praised. What I found most disappointing was the pricing. The regular Modern teppanyaki was reasonably priced at 700 yen, but the Garlic Cheese version was 1,360 yen. I expected a significant difference in quality, but it only had a few slices of cheese and sautéed garlic, which didn't justify the price gap. Perhaps the extensive menu requires them to keep a large inventory, leading to such pricing. If I were to go again, I would opt for the regular Modern teppanyaki.

Located near Demachiyanagi and Hyakumanben Street in Kyoto, this specialty shop offers modern yaki dishes with over 100 creative toppings such as tartar sauce, curry roux, and fruits. My partner and I ordered the "modern yaki" and "kaki modern," which feature fluffy egg-rich batter with plenty of yakisoba and a simple yet delicious flavor.

Shop data Shop name: Modanyaki Fuji Address: 89-5 Tanaka Oseki-cho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto-shi, Kyoto Access: 5 minutes walk from Demachiyanagi Station Phone number: 075-711-5089 Regular holiday: Tuesday (next day in case of public holiday)・2nd and 4th Wednesday Business hours: 11:45-14:00, 17:00-22:30 Tabelog page: https://tabelog.com/kyoto/A2601/A260302/26001821/ Popular shop in Demachiyanagi, Modanyaki Fuji Today's lunch is from the Demachiyanagi area. It's a common practice for students in this area to work only on weekends in the morning and have lunch. If you walk about 5 minutes from the intersection of Demachiyanagi and head towards Demachiyanagi, you'll find the long-established Modanyaki Fuji, which has been around for 35 years. Impressive! Over 100 types of modanyaki Upon entering, you'll see a lineup of menu cards for over 100 types of modanyaki. Over 100 types of modanyaki! This is amazing. The menu is classified into categories such as meat, vegetables, seafood, tartar, rice, Italian, pizza, chili, garlic, fruits, etc. The rice category is really appealing...! Also, the distinction between pizza and Italian is interesting. The interior has a counter with 7 seats and two 4-person tables. By the way, there are three floors, so it's recommended for drinking parties. In fact, it's definitely more fun to go with about 4 people and order various types! I had the lady's lunch (Who's the chubby one?) I was the first one to visit for lunch, enjoying a moment of private dining. The conversation with the soft-spoken master was quite pleasant. I chose the Service Lunch for 720 yen, which includes the most orthodox modanyaki, Fuji tamago, and seasoned rice! Is it a rice dish cooked in dashi broth? The Fuji tamago, a specialty, is a super half-cooked fried egg with sauce. You pour this over the rice and eat it! It's already satisfying on its own...! Before I knew it, my stomach was full, and it was delicious. And all this for 720 yen is cheap. Tabelog reviewer page: http://tabelog.com/rvwr/mach/ Check out this place for your date! When I walked east from Demachiyanagi Station, I found a specialty store for modern yaki. Among flour-based foods, I like modern yaki the best, so I decided to go try it out as soon as I learned about this store's existence. I entered the store on a Saturday afternoon, but there were no other customers. The interior had two table seats and seven counter seats. It seems there are also tatami seats on the second and third floors. In front of the counter seats lined up in a row were wooden signs with the menu written on them. It was quite a spectacle, literally the "signboard" of this store. I was hesitating on what to order in front of these wooden signs, and the owner recommended the tartar sauce modern yaki. Although it was a recommended dish, it didn't quite appeal to me, so after much contemplation, I ended up ordering the basic modern yaki for 700 yen (tax included). Well, it was my first visit after all, so I decided to start from the basics. The modern yaki was grilled right in front of me by the owner himself. He applied sauce and mayonnaise, finished it off, and served it on the hot plate in front of me. He also provided bonito flakes and seaweed to sprinkle according to my preference, and served sweet sauce and spicy thick sauce as additional toppings. I cut it on the hot plate with a spatula and ate it on a small plate. The dough contained cabbage and a small amount of pickled ginger, giving it a fine texture. It was fluffy and very delicious. Since the basic modern yaki does not contain any meat, it was light in that aspect. If you want more volume or luxury, there are various menu items you can customize as mentioned earlier. The yakisoba used medium-thick noodles, providing a chewy texture. I prefer it to have a bit more crispy burnt parts like Shanghai-style yakisoba, so that was a bit disappointing. The combination of the spicy thick sauce and sweet sauce was the most delicious. Despite being a simple dish, I think 700 yen is a great deal. Modern yaki, or rather anything with sauce, is usually delicious. That's the extent of my taste buds (laughs). By the time I finished eating, all the table seats were filled, and the lunchtime hustle and bustle began. Due to its location, there were many Kyoto University students, enjoying modern yaki with a beer in hand during the daytime. It's a good sight to see. Thank you for the meal.

Second stop on the Kyoto food tour. After the first place ran out of alcohol and meat, we walked to Demachiyanagi in search of something to eat. This place boasts about having around 100 varieties of modern-yaki dishes. By the time we arrived, we were fairly sober and getting hungry. The menu was overwhelming with options, so we decided to start with some sake (Kanbei). After much deliberation, we settled on the Squid Ink Modern, Stew Modern, and Tropical Modern for dessert. These dishes were unlike anything we had tried before. The Stew Modern was a delicious combination of the base modern-yaki with the richness of the stew. The Tropical Modern had apples, bananas, and pineapples on top, creating a unique blend of flavors. Despite some initial struggles, the Stew Modern came to the rescue, mediating the flavors. Finally, the Squid Ink Modern was just simply delicious. Although the prices were a bit high, if you're tired of the usual fare, this place is definitely worth a visit. You're sure to find a unique modern dish that suits your taste.

I went to a TeamLab event at Shimogamo Shrine to take photos with my coworkers. Before that, we decided to have dinner near Demachiyanagi Station, so we went to Modanyaki Fujisan, recommended by someone who used to live around there during their student days. There were six of us, so we were seated on the second floor. The first floor had countless menu strips posted in front of the counter. Although it is a Modanyaki specialty shop, they also offer a variety of side dishes, including okonomiyaki, and even some limited-time special items. There were about 50 different toppings to choose from, but it didn't seem like they had combination menus with ingredients like squid and pork. In hindsight, we should have ordered a variety of items to share. We ordered the Frankfurter Modern-yaki, while the others ordered Kimchi Modanyaki (no photo), Shrimp Modern-yaki, Squid Modern-yaki, Double Modern-yaki, and the Time Service Modern-yaki. When the dishes arrived after a while... I had imagined a Modern-yaki with sliced Frankfurters on top, but it was actually just whole Frankfurters placed vertically on the dish! They asked if we wanted mayonnaise beforehand, which was already drizzled on top, but the sauce came in two varieties - sweet and spicy, for us to dip ourselves. Bonito flakes and seaweed were self-serve. The Modern-yaki had yakisoba noodles sandwiched between the batter, making it quite filling. It was delicious, but the women in our group couldn't finish their portions...

First visit. A specialty modern yaki shop! I was surprised by the variety of the menu! I ordered the simple modern yaki for 700 yen, as well as the cheese modern yaki and squid and eggplant stir-fry. It consists of a thin layer of okonomiyaki batter topped with thick noodles and flipped over with an egg. It is located near Shimogamo Shrine and Kyoto University. I definitely want to go back. Thank you for the delicious meal! ^_^

I used to frequent this restaurant a lot when I was in Kyoto. I wasn't sure if it was still open because the owner was an old man when I used to go there, but I was glad to see that he was still doing well. When I asked the old man about his age, I found out that he was only 5 years older than me! I always thought he was much older. The taste of the food was nostalgic, especially their signature dish, the modern yakisoba. They cook the noodles with the sauce first and then layer the toppings separately on top, which is a unique style that I haven't seen in other restaurants. This time, I went with a friend and we ordered a regular size, but I remember coming here with a group of 5 or 6 people before and ordering the jumbo modern yakisoba, which had 10 different toppings and was big enough to serve 5 or 6 people. I wonder if they still have it on the menu. Back then, it cost 6000 yen for one serving. It was a nostalgic visit, and I hope they continue to thrive. Thank you for the delicious meal.
