I visited a restaurant located away from the main street in the evening. It seemed like a local place that has been around for a long time, with older customers dining alone. The interior had tables and seats, and despite the appearance from outside, it could accommodate around 15 groups. I ordered the daily special for ¥800 this time. The food was delicious, and the homely menu made me feel comforted. While water is self-service, tea comes with the meal, so you can wait at your table. Some items not listed on the wall menu can be found on the display menu near the entrance, so I recommend checking it carefully before sitting down.

I had lunch here. There were so many menu options that I had a hard time deciding. I ended up choosing the sukiyaki set for 1050 yen, which was written at the entrance. First, a small dish was served, which seemed like a part of the sukiyaki set. In my opinion, the sukiyaki was a bit bland. It became even more bland when I added the egg. My husband's sukiyaki pot was not cooked well at all. It was different from what I had imagined. Thank you for the meal.

The repeat is certain. This time I had the tempura set meal. I entered the restaurant in the early afternoon and the food arrived quickly. The taste is gentle on the body. I want to go again. There is a coin parking nearby, but you can park up to three cars next to the restaurant if you have a compact car.

The local diner in town. It's hard to find, so I don't think many tourists come here. The menu is extensive, but they don't have fried chicken set meal. I came in for lunch around 2 pm, and there were a few customers. I ordered the chicken cutlet set meal. It's reasonably priced but the chicken is thin. The rice portion is generous. The tofu is in a hot soup, which is nice on a cold day.

I eat lunch without thinking about anything. Everything tastes delicious. As usual, I enter the restaurant and the showcase greets me. I pour myself some water and find an empty seat. I tell the staff I want the daily special. I'm excited to see what will come. What arrived was rice, cold tofu, pickles, a side dish, miso soup, and pork cutlet with a unique miso soup. I try a bit of the miso soup, which is soy sauce-based and light, but full of flavor. I pour soy sauce over the cold tofu and eat it with rice. I add a bit of Worcestershire sauce to the pork cutlet with tonkatsu sauce. I eat the vegetables that come with it as well. Everything tastes delicious.

When traveling with my family in Kyoto, we visited Ryoanji Temple and Kinkakuji in the morning, and just before Ginkakuji we found this place right at lunchtime. The menu here was really appreciated by my elementary school children who are not yet interested in tofu dishes or traditional Japanese side dishes. The food, including the rice, was very delicious and made us feel happy. This restaurant has become one of the places we definitely want to visit again in Kyoto.

For lunch, I went to this restaurant, which is an old-established rice shop. You can definitely fill your stomach here, and the cost performance is excellent. They have a variety of options from daily specials to regular menu items, including udon, making it a great choice for groups of any size. This time, I had the udon set meal. It came with udon, rice, and two side dishes - a small vegetable salad and chikuwa tempura. The udon broth was delicious. The basic flavors here are so good that you can't go wrong with anything you order. Now that it's getting to be the season for nabe (hot pot) udon, I'll try that next time.

I rate it 4.1 for food, service, atmosphere, and value for money. I felt a sense of nostalgia for the old days. I arrived at around 1:30 pm and the restaurant was still fairly busy. I chose the chicken cutlet set meal for 800 yen and sat at a large table. It felt like a typical local eatery with regular customers and high school students blending in naturally. While watching the news on TV, a unique lady (possibly a relative) brought me my meal with a distinctive way of speaking, saying "I went with the chicken cutlet today." At first, I was taken aback by her choice for me, but I soon got used to it. This was exactly what I was looking for. The meal included miso soup, cold tofu, vermicelli salad, pickles, and of course, the chicken cutlet. The thinly pounded chicken breast was fried to perfection. It was just as I expected - no surprises, just simple and delicious. Sometimes, not expecting anything out of the ordinary can be a good thing. This lunch was like a little slice of perfection. Thank you for the meal.

One of the shops that I relied on the most during my university days. It's located a bit away from the bustling streets of Kyoto, but even after graduation, I find myself dropping by whenever I have the time. You choose your menu from the showcase at the entrance, then place your order with the staff before taking a seat. I used to order a lot of dishes even back in my student days, so I often forgot what I had decided on while standing in front of the showcase. It's nostalgic to think about those moments. This time, I reviewed and repeated my choices several times before ordering at the entrance. It was convenient that they had a small size option for my go-to soup dish. The landlady who has taken care of me since my student days is still energetically managing the service. It's heartwarming that she still remembers me, and every time I visit, I feel like I've returned to my student dining table. It was a slightly early dinner time, and the loud broadcast of sumo wrestling filled the empty shop before it got crowded. All our orders were served in less than 10 minutes. The dishes, unchanged from my student days, lined up before me, bringing back fond memories. As I started eating, I noticed the slightly rich flavor that isn't typical of Kyoto cuisine, but it was just as delicious as ever. Before I knew it, I had finished everything. Satisfied and full, I was surprised when I received the bill and saw that it was only around a thousand yen. I thought there must have been a mistake, but after a quick mental calculation while leaving, I realized there was no error. Impressive. I hope this shop continues to support the stomachs of students and university staff living nearby for a long time to come.

I was taken to a very ordinary teishoku restaurant, but the food was delicious. I love this kind of place - it has a nostalgic Showa era vibe. The prices are reasonable and you get a main dish, two side dishes, pickles, miso soup, and plenty of rice. They even serve hojicha, which is a nice touch. Living in America, Japanese food at restaurants can be expensive, so I usually cook at home. Eating a regular Japanese meal at a restaurant feels like a special treat for me now. I left feeling full and satisfied - it was delicious!

This local restaurant is loved by people of all ages, with generous portions and a cozy atmosphere! Unfortunately, I didn't get a photo, but I highly recommend their Chinese noodles and during winter, their pork soup! It's a nostalgic and heartwarming experience. The set meal comes with cold tofu and boiled vegetables, which adds to the overall satisfaction. Great value for money!

The white rice is really delicious. However, overall it's a bit salty. But that makes the rice go down well, so it's good (even the normal portion felt quite large).

A long-established dining place in Shirakawa. It's great that they're open until around 8 p.m. even at night. It was hot, so I ordered cold udon noodles. Just regular cold udon noodles. I like seeing customers eating while watching TV.

Shirakawa Daigin's omurice set. The omurice is simple with not a lot of fillings, but it's well-seasoned and pretty good. The side dishes are also satisfying, so I recommend getting the set meal.

Shoga-yaki set meal at Shirakawa Daigin with natto. The shoga-yaki has a strong flavor which goes well with rice. I wish there was a restaurant like this near my workplace.

First and foremost, the standout point is the great value for money. This is the true appeal of a cafeteria. The menu is also extensive. There are various things written all over, making it hard to grasp everything in just one visit. Normally, this might be seen as "confusing", but the atmosphere here makes you feel open-minded about it. "Oh, they have this too!" You think about what to order next time as you wait for your current dish. The kitsune udon (udon noodles with fried tofu, Kyoto style without the sweetness) and the fried horse mackerel set meal (around 800 yen) were both incredibly delicious. Not mind-blowing, just simply delicious. That's all you need. The fish is not particularly fresh, but it doesn't have a fishy smell, it's light and crispy. Perfect. No complaints about the service, hygiene, ambiance, no negatives at all. I want to go there every week.

I had the daily set meal for 750 yen. It included horse mackerel fry, stir-fried vegetables, salad, spinach with sesame dressing, pickled Chinese cabbage, miso soup, and a large portion of rice. It was delicious with a generous portion.
