☑️ Cheese ¥450 ☑️ White Maitake Tempura ¥450 Upon researching, it seems that they put a lot of effort into making the dish. The surimi is made using only the highest grade white meat from Toyo-ri, ground with a stone mill in the traditional way, and they do not use any additives. It is gluten-free. There is seating space for about 6 people. The dish is large and satisfying for ¥450. The cheese is the main ingredient and melts deliciously, but I thought it would be even better if the surimi part had some flavor as well. I tried the cheese, but I actually wanted to try the octopus and shrimp too. If there were products with cheese inside the octopus and shrimp, I think they would sell even more. Visited around 5 pm in March 2023.

Today, I decided to visit a tempura restaurant in Nishiki Market in Kyoto. Houkyuuan Kyoto Nishiki Main Store seems to specialize in "stick tempura" for eating on the go. They have several branches around tourist areas, and the one in Nishiki Market appears to be the main store. Usually, they close at 7 pm, but due to the pandemic, they have been closing earlier. I arrived around 5:15 pm, and they were already preparing to close. When I asked if they were still open, the staff brought out some stick tempura for me to choose from. I ended up getting three different kinds, made from the finest quality whitefish and threadfin bream ground in a stone mill. Each stick tempura cost around 450 yen. The tempura wasn't as greasy as I expected, as they steam it in a steamer after frying to remove excess oil. The texture of the tempura was great, with a nice crunch from the lotus root. I tried stick tempura with lotus root, cheese, and octopus with shiso leaf. The cheese was rich and delicious, while the octopus had a strong presence with a hint of shiso flavor. Overall, I enjoyed the unique tempura experience at Houkyuuan.

If you are going to eat your way through Nishiki Market, I highly recommend trying the mashed potato dish here. I think it's been about 9 years since I first came here? The menu hasn't really changed much, I guess. Well, I just end up ordering the same thing every time, haha. It's mashed potatoes with butter, and the chunky texture of the sweet potatoes, the richness of the butter, and the perfect balance of saltiness make it irresistible. I feel kind of lonely if I don't come here at least once a month, so I make sure to come every month. By the way, I mentioned eating while walking around, but I can't do that, so I always sit down in a chair to eat. There are chairs available, so it's perfect for people who aren't good at eating on the go. Haha.

I decided to take a stroll through Nishiki Market since I was in Kyoto. Usually, it's crowded with people, but this time it was empty. I could see all the way to the end. It felt like night at Nishiki Market. I noticed a shop called 練薬膳点心汸臼庵 (Houju An) and decided to buy something. I couldn't read the name of the shop (laughs). There were hardly any foreign tourists around. I bought two recommended tempura items, Hokkaido potato with butter and squid tempura. They were delicious and piping hot, but I was surprised by the price. 900 yen for two pieces. Unbelievable. It's the tourist price, I guess!

When I used to live in Osaka, I often visited Kyoto, but I had never been to Nishiki Market before. I really wanted to go. It was so crowded with foreign tourists. I want to try a little bit of everything at every store. It's a bit expensive, but I think I'll give it a try. I bought some buttered potatoes, and they were delicious, especially when freshly fried. There are many delicious restaurants in Nishiki Market, even though it's a bit pricey. Next time, I think I'll focus on exploring that area. And with that, I headed back to Kyoto Station.

It's not too buttery, more like a potato tempura or sweet potato fry. Cheese, squid, and potato butter seem to be popular, so I guess cheese is the best choice?

On our way back to Joshu, we had a secret plan to add some color to Fukui Prefecture. Before the final chapter of our food tour at Nishiki Market, we visited a shop called "Kyoan". Last time it was something like a paste, and before we knew it, my wife and son were standing in line. We were handed some ice cream to taste, and it was amazing. The flavor of the "Ultra Super Rich Soft" ice cream was truly rich and delicious. We tried the "Hokkaido Super Rich Fresh Milk Vanilla" flavor, which was incredibly rich. We were so impressed that we couldn't help but exclaim loudly. A local lady, surprised by our reaction, mentioned that locals don't really go to Nishiki Market anymore. It seems like a tourist spot. We were delighted by the Hokkaido super rich soft serve ice cream in Kyoto. We enjoyed every bite and left nothing behind. It was a satisfying and delicious experience. Thank you for the meal. 3.09 ☆ 20 reviews

This is a shop in Nishiki Market that specializes in stick tempura. It seems like this type of food has become a popular choice for eating while walking around. Among the various options, I chose cheese this time, which was priced at a surprisingly high 450 yen. - Food/Taste: It is made by deep-frying fish paste and then steaming it. The taste is good, but it doesn't have a particularly strong impact. - Service: There are various options to choose from, making it a bit difficult to decide. Cheese seemed to be the most popular choice, especially among foreign customers. It was thoughtful of them to serve it hot and ready to eat. - Atmosphere: It's a takeout shop, but it's quite clean and visually appealing. - Cost performance: The portion size was decent and it's a unique item, so the price seems reasonable, although slightly on the higher side for a walking snack. Overall, it was tasty, had a good portion size, and is a reliable option for eating while walking. It's a convenient shop with a variety of choices, so pick your favorite and give it a try.

Hello, this is Mintz (@mintz), a food lover. Nishiki Market in Kyoto is a famous spot for foodies. It's a lively place with many different shops to explore. I started with some tempura skewers. I tried the octopus and shiso flavor. The smell alone would make anyone stop in their tracks (laughs). Surprisingly, it was quite filling with lots of octopus inside. Be careful not to let it fall off the skewer while eating. It would have been even better with some mustard. Just be cautious as it's very hot, so watch out for burns!

In the midst of a huge crowd, I took a bite of my child's "Roast Chicken" and then noticed a shop with the words "Medicinal Herbal Dim Sum" that caught my eye... What kind of shop is it? It seemed to offer ice cream as well. At 2:22 PM, I received a hot and delicious ginger dish for 450 yen. As I slowly put away my change in my wallet and took a bite, it was a delicious delicacy. Now, where are the two of them? This is the 3-day limited Kyoto series, 12th edition. Maruten might be cheaper. Thank you for the meal.

Around 2:30 pm, we left the Railway Museum and headed straight to Nishiki Market. On the way, Taikun fell asleep. After about 10 minutes, we arrived at the market. It was a hot day, and I was wondering how long I could bear it. I decided to wake Taikun up by carrying him and heading towards the market. In this scorching heat, I thought some juice would help us wake up. Just as we entered the market from the parking lot, we found a place selling soft serve ice cream and smoothies. It seemed like a popular spot for foreign tourists in Kyoto. I ordered a mango mix smoothie, Taikun got a blueberry mix, and Ao-chan opted for a soft serve ice cream. The mango mix was delicious, refreshing, and perfectly chilled. The blueberry mix had a refreshing and tangy taste. The soft serve ice cream was incredibly rich and tasty. However, the prices were quite high, with the smoothies costing 600 yen each. It seemed like the prices were set high because of the delicious taste. Overall, the experience was enjoyable, but the prices were a bit steep.

Midsummer in Kyoto, strolling through Nishiki Market. I knew there was a fish cake shop here, but never had the chance to try it until now. I was feeling a bit peckish, so I decided to give it a try for the first time. I ordered the Octopus and Shiso Fish Cake for 450 yen. Most of the fish cakes here are priced at 450 yen. The Octopus and Shiso Fish Cake had a slightly subtle Shiso flavor. It was just the right size for a quick snack. This shop is perfect for food tasting while walking around. Bon appétit!

In July, during a food tour in Kyoto, I tried the Kyoto-style rolled omelet skewer at "Tanaka Kei-tamago." Right across from there is "Kyoan," where they sell various skewered tempura items like mashed tempura, soft serve ice cream, and smoothies. They also have seating for about 10 people. I ordered the mashed tempura with ginger, which was priced at 450 yen. The tempura was quite large and had a good weight to it. Although I thought 450 yen was a bit expensive, the size was decent. The hot mashed tempura was fluffy and delicious, although I couldn't taste much of the ginger flavor. Overall, it was a satisfying meal.

(Visit on 2016.12.10) Half a year since my last visit to Kyoto (3rd place... and the last one haha) (^^♪ I had plans to meet up with a friend at 19:00, but I had some time to spare before that, so I decided to take a stroll around Nishiki Market and buy some tamagoyaki to take home. However, it was already late and there were only a few left. I noticed steam rising from a shop on the southwest corner of Tomikoji Street, so I thought I'd take a look. I arrived at "Koukyuuan Kyoto Nishiki Main Store" located at 188 Uoya-cho, Tomikoji-dori, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto. The store is open from 11:00 to 19:00 and is closed from 1/1 to 1/6. I found out later that the name is read as "houkyuuan." Surprisingly, the company is based in Osaka! The shop has branches in various locations such as Kyoto Kiyomizu, Yufuin, Ise Jingu, Arima Onsen, Kinosaki Onsen, and Otaru. They use only the highest quality surimi made from white fish and threadfin bream here. The surimi is shaped into sticks or circles and skewered, making it easy to eat while walking. The menu includes octopus with shiso, squid tempura, shrimp tempura, cheese, fried oysters, potato with butter, lotus root, sweet potato, wood ear mushrooms, ginger, and shredded burdock root. I ordered the ginger for 450 yen. Since it's an order at the storefront, you pay and receive it immediately. I had to put the change in my wallet and ended up taking a bite without realizing it. "Oh? This is delicious!" I couldn't resist taking another bite (*´ω`*) haha. A proper food blogger would take a photo before eating, but oh well! The ginger bits throughout added a nice touch. The size was about 10cm in diameter, seemed big at first, but it disappeared in no time. I was planning to go to one more place before heading back, but the train schedule didn't allow it. Kyoto, I'll be back! Wait for me~ haha. Thank you for the meal♪

"Houkyuuan" is a tempura stick shop located in the middle of Nishiki Market in Kyoto. They offer a variety of tempura sticks displayed in front of the shop, perfect for enjoying while walking around. The tempura sticks are steamed in a steamer, so they are served hot. I couldn't decide which one to try, but I ended up getting the "Octopus and Shiso" for 450 yen, while my son chose the "Potato Butter" for the same price. We could have eaten while walking, but we decided to sit on the chairs next to the shop due to the crowd. According to my son, it was actually less crowded that day. The "Octopus and Shiso" stick was filled with octopus and had a nice crunchy texture with a refreshing shiso flavor. It was quite large, but we finished it in no time. The "Potato Butter" stick had a delicious combination of potato and butter. It seems to be a popular shop in Nishiki Market, as we saw many people enjoying their tempura sticks while walking around. I even saw a foreigner holding a tempura stick with "Pickled Ginger" on it, which must have been quite a surprising choice. Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience at this shop. Thank you for the meal.

I had to try some (laughs). I tried the cheese-filled and octopus with shiso flavors. They were quite big and very filling. They were delicious because they were warm! I want to try all the varieties (≧∇≦). There are places to sit and eat next to the shop, so I could enjoy them slowly. While I was buying dashimaki at Tanaka Eggs, my companion bought ginger tempura here. It's convenient that there is seating available to eat here. The tempura is freshly fried, which is dangerous for someone like me with a sensitive tongue. And this ginger tempura here is about 1 centimeter thick, so it doesn't cool down easily. Surprisingly, it's light and easy to eat. It seems like it would still be tasty even when it cools down. I'd like to try something different next time.
