On the way from Kyoto to Osaka, I sometimes stop in Kameoka on the Kyoto Jukan Expressway for a little sightseeing and lunch. This time, there was a clothing exhibition at a koji shop in Kameoka, so I decided to take a peek before heading to the exhibition. But first, lunch!
I found a café near the moat of Kameoka Castle ruins. It looked quite classic and had plenty of parking spaces. The interior of the café faced the moat, and the lush greenery and lotus leaves floating on the water surface were beautiful this time of year. Unfortunately, the Tanba beef bifukatsu that I was looking forward to was not available. So, after much deliberation, I settled for the chicken tatsutaage lunch set.
The set included four large pieces of chicken tatsutaage, an ebi fry, and spaghetti hidden underneath. It also came with a salad, potato salad, beef kinpira, a fried egg, a rabbit-shaped apple miso soup, and rice. Since I had plans for a luxurious dinner and drinks in Osaka later, I decided to go easy on the rice.
The chicken tatsutaage was delicious and the portion was generous. The ebi fry was served without tartar sauce, but the potato salad was a nice surprise with beef kinpira hidden underneath. The miso soup had dried fish flakes (iriko) at the bottom, and it was flavorful.
While enjoying the view of the moat outside, I noticed an ashtray on the table, even though there was a non-smoking section. It could have changed the atmosphere if someone was smoking indoors. The restroom was traditional Japanese style, which is rare these days.
Overall, the café had a nostalgic charm, and the lunch was delicious. I wonder when they will resume serving the Tanba beef bifukatsu. After lunch, I visited the qotoriya clothing exhibition at the koji shop. Unfortunately, the koji was only for display and not for sale. Kameoka has some interesting shops if you explore a bit.
