I had the Imobou Gozen. The combination of fluffy taro and flavorful codfish on a stick was amazing, and it was satisfying on its own. I didn't include a photo, but before the main dish like Imobou, they also serve appetizers. It had been a while since my last visit, but the deliciousness of Imobou was still there, and I was happy about it.

We had business in Kawaramachi, Kyoto, and visited the restaurant at the strong request of my mother and grandmother. We visited around 1:30 pm on a weekday, and the restaurant was not crowded, so we were seated promptly. We were recommended the Tororo Nori Maki, so all three of us ordered the set meal with Tororo Nori Maki. I ordered the Hana Gozen. The Hana Gozen (3300 yen) included Imobou, Tororo Nori Maki, Gion Tofu, Osumashi soup, a small dish (Konjac and Komatsuna salad?), rice, and pickles. The Imobou was very soft and sweet, like a sweet potato, and delicious. The dish also included simmered stick cod, which was also tasty. The tofu was served in hot water with ginger on top, and it was delicious. The Osumashi soup had a gourd-shaped omelet and Yuba in it, with a refreshing taste of sansho pepper. The Tororo Nori Maki recommended by my mother and grandmother was indeed delicious, and I could eat as many pieces as I wanted. My grandmother was full, so I had a little bit of hers. I found the rice portion a bit small, but it was just right after sharing with my mother and grandmother. Everything was delicious.

It's been a while since I visited Kyoto. I went to Okazaki Shrine to pray. There was a long line, but surprisingly it only took about an hour. There were lots of rabbits. What should I have for lunch? Should I have shrimp and arrowroot stew at "Imobou" or warm up with delicious tofu hot pot at "Okudan Shimizu"? After much deliberation, I took a bus and arrived at "Imobou Hirano-ya Honke"! I remembered that this place was cold last time I visited, so I entered at noon. I was seated in the back, which was still cold with no AC or heater. I ordered the Hana Gozen set meal. It included Imobou, grated yam with seaweed, Gion tofu, small side dishes, plum soup, rice, and pickles. I really love Imobou. The waitress seemed overwhelmed, and I felt a bit sorry for her. The lady at the register must be the owner. Can't something be done about this? Despite that, the food was delicious. On my way to Kiyomizu, I saw the "Imobou Hirano-ya Main Store" in the back. It looked warmer than the other place. The menu seemed slightly different, with smaller portions of Imobou. I will visit "Imobou Hirano-ya Honke" again next time. I just love Imobou as the main dish! I plan to go in spring or autumn.

I didn't eat at Imobou and instead had Ebi-Tendon because I suddenly craved Tendon (lol). The Tendon with three large prawns was satisfying and delicious. After moving around Kyoto all day, it was healing to be able to have a relaxing meal in a private room.

When I came to eat before, I remember seeing big sweet potatoes, but this time there were two small sweet potatoes neatly cut like taro. They were delicious with a slightly sweet seasoning. They were cooked together with stick cod, which was not as sweet and had a soft texture as I expected. The tofu with Yoshino kudzu sauce was silky smooth but firm. The taste of the soup was also good. Although the appearance and variety of dishes were simple, the sweet potatoes made me feel full. My daughter, who has recently developed a liking for simmered dishes, and I enjoyed the meal. When it was time to pay, it turned out that what we ate today was not taro but sweet potatoes. What a surprise! Apparently, taro is difficult to store and is only available in the market from late October to around April. That explains why the restaurant was not crowded.

When you get off the bus in Gion, you will see Yasaka Shrine in front of you, with tourists in kimonos happily taking commemorative photos. Pass through the gate and head to the left, and you will reach the restaurant in about 5 minutes. I visited on a weekday in January at noon, and there were few customers, so I was guided to a seat by the window with a view of the garden. I tried the "Imobou," which is a dish of taro and cod cooked together in soy sauce and mirin. It is cooked with sugar and topped with yuzu peel. When you uncover the lid, the aroma is irresistible. The beautifully peeled taro is soaked in a flavorful broth all the way through. It was cooked to be soft and tender without losing its shape, and the presentation was excellent. The dry sake paired well with the soy-simmered dish, as they are both fermented foods. I also enjoyed authentic Japanese dishes like tofu hot pot, rolled omelet, and yuba soup with grated yam and seaweed. The hot sake went down smoothly even during the day. Kyoto is a tourist destination, so although some places may look stylish, many restaurants do not prepare their dishes properly. I hope tourists will eat at establishments with skilled chefs like this one. The Imobou for 1500 yen is a great deal. They work hard all year round without closing. Thank you for the delicious meal. I would like to visit again.

I felt like eating shrimp and sweet potatoes, so I chose the specialty dish called "imobou" for lunch. When I entered the restaurant in Maruyama Park, there were initially about two groups of customers, but then more and more people started coming in. Many of them were elderly or tourists. The imobou was okay.

When I invited the beautiful leader of the office yoga club on a date, she requested to eat imobou. I was surprised to learn that my Kyoto girlfriend had never been to eat imobou before. We went for a meal after work. After the meal, she wanted dessert at a sweet shop, so we opted for a meal-only course. On a Sunday lunch, the back room was lively with a group, but we had the cozy table seats all to ourselves. We ordered the Hanagomae set, which included imobou, tororo seaweed roll, Gion tofu, side dishes, umebowl soup, rice, and pickles. Everything was beautifully arranged on a tray and brought to us. It was summer, so the imobou was made from satsumaimo instead of ebimaimo. The taste of codfish had seeped into the sweet potato, making it incredibly delicious. I understood why people in Kyoto have loved it for so long. The tororo seaweed roll had a crispy seaweed texture that was very pleasant. She focuses on yoga to enhance her foundation of life and practices diligently, paying attention to her diet as well. She really liked the imobou. It was worth it, and I think my score went up a bit.

In the corner of Maruyama Park, there are various shops lined up. I visited here, the birthplace of "Imobou." "Imobou" is a dish that combines yam and stick cod, which is very Kyoto-like, but also gives off a subtle feeling. When you come to Kyoto, it's nice to visit this kind of shop.

I drove to Kyoto and was looking forward to trying the delicious shrimp potatoes at the 300-year-old Kyoto specialty store "Imobou Honten," but to my surprise, they served taro instead. - Foodie Maro

Today, I decided to stroll from Yasaka Shrine to Chion-in Temple. I took a back road that led me to Chion-in Temple. Along the way, I came across the main branch of "Imobou," so I decided to have lunch there today.
Imobou Hirano-ke Main Branch is a long-established shop with a history of 300 years. The dish "Imobou," which is made by simmering shrimp and cod together, is said to be the origin of the name. I enjoyed the meal in a store with a view of the garden. Along with tea, I was served a sweet with a scent of buckwheat.
The staff provided very polite and courteous service, which was impressive.

The dishes were covered with many lids, so I removed the lids to take photos of the dishes again. The elegant dishes evoke a sense of Japanese aesthetics. I will introduce the delicious dishes one by one.
- Imobou
The shrimp and cod are well seasoned, with a slightly sweet taste. The cod, which reveals the flavor of the broth as you chew, is a perfect accompaniment to rice. The firm texture of the cod was particularly enjoyable and added depth to the flavor.
- Tororo Nori Maki
This dish spreads the deliciousness of nori in your mouth. The texture of the tororo (grated yam) was also good, and it was delicious. Additionally, the soup with Gion tofu and yuba (tofu skin) was also tasty. It was my first time trying tofu with mustard, and it was a unique experience.
Although the dishes were a bit pricey, I believe they were worth the value. I was able to enjoy the leisurely taste of a long-established Kyoto restaurant.

For lunch, I couldn't decide between having Yudofu at Okutan in Maruyama Park or Imobou, as you can eat Yudofu in Tokyo but not Imobou. I ended up choosing Imobou, where I had a dish of simmered shrimp and dried cod. Imobou is a restaurant that has been around for 300 years, offering a unique taste of winter in Kyoto with its soft shrimp and cod that doesn't have a strong smell.

Passing through the gate of Yasaka Shrine and heading deeper into the park, you will find a traditional Japanese restaurant with a historical atmosphere. This is Imobou, a renowned establishment that has been serving customers for nearly 300 years. The name "Imobou" comes from combining "imo" (taro) and "bou" (dried cod), two main ingredients used in their signature dish. The restaurant offers private rooms with air conditioning, perfect for the chilly Kyoto winter. We ordered the Imobou set meal for 2,700 yen, which came with Gion tofu, taro roll, rice, pickles, and soup. The taro was impressively large and flavorful, complementing the dried cod well. While some may question the price, considering the long-standing reputation of this historic restaurant and the serene dining environment, it seems reasonable. It's worth noting that during the summer, a different type of taro is used due to the unavailability of sea taro. Overall, dining at Imobou was a delightful experience.

During our visit to the Gion Festival at night, we were the only customers besides us. The food was incredibly delicious, but it was a shame that there were no other guests. We won't be revisiting, and next time we will go to the neighboring restaurant instead.

The drinks were slow to come out and the service seemed to be struggling. Maybe they were short-staffed. Also, they didn't have taro root, which was disappointing. Overall, the service was slow.

This will be our last trip to Kyoto. We have come to Kyoto from Saitama City many times, but this time we drove here to accommodate my partner's weak legs. We chose Hirano-ya Honke because they have a parking lot. We have eaten shrimp and taro many times, but this was our first time trying imobou. In conclusion, it did not suit our taste. The shrimp and taro dish that best suited our taste on this Kyoto trip was at Masuda in Pontocho. However, visiting Hirano-ya Honke for imobou was satisfying as a conversation piece.

Delicious! I entered the restaurant right after it opened. I ordered the 3000 yen potato hot pot course. There were various types of dishes, and I was quite full! On my way out, I received an oil blotting paper.

I stopped by on my walk because I got hungry. I saw a chain of stores nearby, but decided to go to the original store. I wondered what "imobou" was. It looked plain, but I couldn't resist my hunger and went inside. I learned that "imobou" is made with shrimp and dried cod, and when I tried it, it was delicious! I imagined that even Oshinpei must have eaten it when he was stationed in Kyoto. I enjoyed it while thinking about that. It goes well with the store's limited edition sake.
