I would rate this place as 4.3 [Food 4.2 | Service - | Atmosphere - | Value for money 4.3 | Drinks -]. I have visited Kujira-san a few times in the past when I used to go to Seigoin area frequently. The owner, Mr. Nomura, who used to be at Gion Kiraku, runs this place with his wife. One of the unique features here is that they open from 8 am and offer both bento sales and eat-in options. The menu changes daily with only one dish available, which probably allows them to offer bento boxes for 600 yen. While personal preferences may vary, they announce the daily menu on Facebook so you can check it in advance. Today, the main dish was chicken tenderloin with shiso leaf roll fry, along with 4 side dishes, pickles, rice (with extra servings available), and a separate pack of miso soup with clams. All of this for 600 yen is definitely a good deal. The side dishes are prepared in advance and kept in the fridge. You simply take them out, serve the rice, add the freshly fried roll fry, and you're done. The owner, who was alone today, efficiently serves the customers without making them wait. I took the bento home and decided to present it on a plate instead of eating it straight from the box, adding some extras like natto, mozuku seaweed, and pickled radish to make it a luxurious lunch. The side dishes, including grated yam with plum, sautéed burdock root, stir-fried shredded carrots, and simmered greens with fried tofu, were all carefully prepared. The main roll fry was also delicious, with a slightly sweet sauce. Overall, it was a very satisfying meal. If this place were near my usual hangout spot by the riverside, I could easily have their food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner all day. If it were closer, it would definitely become my go-to place. Many of my favorite food websites also visit this place.
