It was a comfortable Saturday afternoon around 3:00 PM in June, with low humidity and clear weather. French pastries are popular these days, and while I do enjoy French pastries, sometimes I feel like trying cakes from a different country. There are many cake shops in Kobe with German names, but often they have a mix of French and Japanese pastries, so they are not reliable (laughs). This shop actually offers authentic German pastries, which I appreciate. It's a small shop with only about 5 types of cakes available. Since it was around 3:00 PM on Saturday, there was only one piece left of a certain cake, and if I had arrived a little later, I might not have had the chance to choose. One of the cakes that was still available was the German cream puff called "Windbeutel." I'm not a fan of whipped cream, so if I hadn't read the reviews, I probably wouldn't have ordered it. Since it was recommended in the reviews, I decided to give it a try despite my dislike for whipped cream. I also like cakes with alcohol in them, so even though I'm not a big fan of chocolate, I ordered a small dome-shaped chocolate cake (I can't remember the name) that was said to contain a fair amount of alcohol. In the end, both cakes were delicious. Despite the generous amount of whipped cream in the cream puff, which would normally give me heartburn, the addition of alcohol made it surprisingly refreshing to eat. Besides whipped cream, it also had custard and cherry jam or compote in it. I was chatting while eating, so my memory is a bit fuzzy. As for the chocolate cake, although I'm not a big fan of chocolate, the richness combined with the hint of alcohol made it surprisingly refreshing to eat. I found the chocolate cake to be even more delicious. I had apple cider as my drink. It had a German name, but it was too difficult and long to write out (laughs). This juice wasn't too sweet, and it seemed to be made with real apple juice rather than concentrated or reduced, so it was delicious. They also serve high-quality tea, such as Ronnefeldt, so I think the drinks here are of good quality as well. I was planning to visit the tea specialty shop next door, so I didn't order tea this time, but I would like to try it next time. I tend to get bored easily and can't eat the same cake all the time, so I hope to revisit when the seasons change and the menu completely changes. Also, it may just be a coincidence, but when I visited, there were many male (middle-aged) solo customers. I'm not sure if it's because the cakes aren't as fancy as French pastries or because there are many cakes with alcohol in them, but I don't know the reason (laughs).
