A cute shop slightly tucked away from the main street. Their specialty waffles sell out quickly, so it's better to go early. The waffles have a fluffy and chewy texture with a generous amount of custard filling. I also bought a cheesecake which was light and had a nostalgic taste, very delicious. Their baked goods start from 100 yen each, making it a good value for money.

This shop is famous for its delicious waffles, but personally, I also love their banana roll cake. The prices are very reasonable and worth it. It feels very luxurious to have it after a meal. The sweetness is clear and on the sweeter side, giving a feeling of indulging in a dessert, which I love.

After having an outdoor lunch, I decided to try some outdoor sweets at Ofundo, known for their waffles. I chose the seasonal tart "Muscat Tart" and an "Omelette." I enjoyed them in the Kyoto Gyoen. The "Omelette" was decently tasty, but the "Muscat Tart" was a delightful surprise. It had layers of sponge cake, custard cream, and whipped cream, topped with shiny muscat grapes. Cutting into it and tasting all five flavors at once was truly delicious. I also brought home the "Smile Sandwich," a buttercream-filled sponge cake in plain and chestnut flavors. The cake had a nostalgic taste, somewhat like a castella with a hint of egg yolk. It was a bit too sweet for my liking, though.

Yesterday, on the way back from hot yoga, my wife bought cakes from Oufudou, an old-established cake shop. It is a popular shop with many long-time fans, and if you go there in the afternoon, some items may be sold out. The shop seemed to have a steady stream of customers. I wanted to eat the strawberry shortcake, but they are not making it now because good strawberries are not available. They seem to be very particular about the ingredients. My wife brought back a fig tart, a shortcake, and the famous waffles. The cream is not too sweet, with a good sweetness that is not bland but still delicious. The perfect balance of sweetness. Cakes with overwhelming sweetness make you break out in a sweat after eating one, but with these, you could eat about three. I find figs strange because I don't think they taste good when eaten on their own, but when used in cakes or bread, they transform into something incredibly delicious. The waffle with plenty of custard cream was also delicious, with no unnecessary flavors and a mild sweetness. It's easy to see why it's popular. Next time, I will reserve the seasonal limited edition peach cake that I couldn't buy this time and go buy it.

This is a 3-minute walk from Marutamachi Station on the subway. It is located on the south side of the Imperial Palace from Karasuma Marutamachi Station. It faces Takayacho Street west of Karasuma on the south side. In the city, this place is appreciated as a souvenir for middle-aged and elderly people. Probably, the nostalgic Showa retro taste and shape give off a melancholic European vibe. It is perfect as a souvenir for people aged 70 and above. In the city, elderly people's souvenirs, for those with a sweet tooth, Oufudou is the way to go. Personally, I prefer cakes with strawberries on top over baked goods. Shortcake, pudding, waffle chocolate cake with custard filling could also be good options. Baumkuchen is also famous, but I think fresh items are better than ones that last long. I feel like having an apple pie now. (laughs)

Local people seem to love this shop. I saw many housewives buying lots of baked goods and cakes to take home. The Baumkuchen here has more layers than usual, but it's light and fluffy, not dense. It has a thin sugar coating on the outside, giving it a slightly crispy texture. The buttery aroma is delightful, with a hint of cream and a subtle taste of liquor. It's really delicious! The Lemon Cake is moist and soft, with a fine texture and a thin lemon chocolate coating. The gentle lemon flavor is noticeable. Despite containing liquor and honey, the taste is not overpowering. Both treats have an elegant taste, perfect for enjoying with tea.

Located on the south side of the intersection of Karasuma and Kamihikojima, this shop is closest to Marutamachi Station on the subway. It used to be a retro cake shop, but has since been rebuilt into a new and clean establishment. I visited to buy a chocolate cake for Valentine's Day. When I visited in the evening, the popular waffles were already sold out. The plain Baumkuchen was also sold out, with only a few matcha-flavored ones left. I bought two types of chocolate cakes that were still available. I also ordered a honey madeleine and a matcha Baumkuchen. Both types of chocolate cakes were delicious. Especially the square one, with sweet chocolate cream and a hint of berry sauce sandwiched inside, was just right and very tasty. The other chocolate cake, resembling a shortcake, was less sweet and easy to eat.

I visited during lunch time on Wednesday, November 13, 2019. As it was a good timing, there was a variety of cakes available. I ordered the "Double Chocolate" for 450 yen and two pieces of waffles for 200 yen each. It seems that the waffles are quite popular as there is a limit of 10 pieces per purchase. The Double Chocolate has the taste of a local cake shop, while the waffles have a great texture. They would make a perfect souvenir. The Mont Blanc and other cakes also looked delicious.

It was mid-afternoon, but many items were already sold out, which was surprising. I was planning to buy a plain cut Baumkuchen, but it was sold out, so I ended up buying a cut matcha Baumkuchen instead. I tried a sample before buying, but I felt a bit of dryness, so I opted for the cut version instead of the whole cake. It was slightly dry and disappointing. I also found it a bit disappointing that shortening was used in the cake.
